Jurnal Entomologi Indonesia (JEI) publishes original research papers and short communications that covers the basic and applied aspect of insects and mites or other arthropods in agriculture, forestry, human and animal health, and natural resources and environmental management. The journal is published by Perhimpunan Entomologi Indonesia (Entomological Society of Indonesia). JEI was first published at the beginning of 2004 with twice per year in frequency on March and September. Since 2015, Jurnal Entomologi Indonesia has been published three times per year on March, July, and November.

Abstract

In the last three decades, there has been a four fold increase of dengue incidence globally. The control of the disease depends heavily on controlling the vector. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an ecological data of vector to identify the population density of the mosquitoes. One method to study the density and presence of the mosquitoes is through the use of ovitrap. The aim of this research is to identify the effect of two different types of ovitraps. One hundred and eighty ovitrap consist of coconut shell and glass ovitrap were placed in three different subdistricts which was selected based on the Incidence Rate of DHF in the district of Purwokerto City. The container indices and eggs density were compared between two types of ovitrap. Research was conducted using experimental quasy and the data were analyzed with the Mann-Whitney test. The total amount of eggs from coconut shell ovitrap were 9328 of eggs were obtain from 51.33 of ovitrap while the total amount of eggs from glass ovitrap only 1858 of eggs were obtain from 29 ovitrap. Statistical test showed significant difference between the amount of eggs of coconut shell higher than the glass. Mosquitoes prefer natural coconut shell ovitrap compared with artificial ovitrap so we recommended that to eradicate the mosquitoes nest, should not only artificial containers but also natural container to be managed in order to control the dengue vector.

Abstract

The aim of this experiment was to find out the type of medium that was potential for the metabolite production and growth of P. luminescens. LB, NB, Wakimoto, and T3 were examined as growth media for metabolite production and growth of P. luminescens. LB was the best medium for the growth of P. luminescens and metabolite production.

Abstract

Lac insects (Laccifer lacca Kerr) live parasitically on “kosambi” plants, and produce resins that are called lac. Lac are used for electronics, printing, textile, clothing, cosmetics, and food industry. The insects also live on various plants. The goal of this research was to evaluate the population quality of Lac insect that live on three host plants. The best parameter for population quality was biomass or lac production. Three host plants were inoculated by broods. The result showed that “kosambi” was the best host plant for the insect due to higher biomass (i.e lac production) than “kabesak putih” and “kabesak hitam” plants.

Abstract

Study on the diversity of insect visitors on tomato flowers were conducted at Bina Sarana Bakti (BSB) organic farm, Cisarua, West Java. Diversity of insects were observed by observational method, an 10 m2 area of tomato plants in the morning, mid-day, and afternoon. Observations were conducted during 20 days. Diversity of visiting insects were analyzed by Shannon diversity and its evenness. Similarity of visiting insects between time of observations were analyzed by Jaccard similarity index. In organic farm, insect visitors of tomato plants consist of six orders belonging to eight species. Insect visitors of tomato flowers were dominated by Thrips sp. (Thysanoptera) and Hylaeus sp. (Hymenoptera). Hylaeus sp. was a main pollinator of tomato plants. Diversity of insect visitors in the morning and mid-day was higher than in the afternoon. Evenness of insect visitors of tomato flowers between observation times were relatively equal.

Abstract

Several methods can be used to control pest infestation, especially by the use of biological agents that do not contaminate environment. Virus as a biological agent has already been used to control army worm on some plants. Some benefits can be obtained when biological agents are used to control insect infestation. The objectives of these studies were to obtain: a method to produce MsNPV formulation from rice army worm; an effective and efficient method to pack and store MsNPV formulation as biological agent of rice army worm and an efficient application method of MsNPV formulation to control rice army worm. These studies were conducted at laboratory and green house in Bogor and rice field in Indramayu and Sukabumi, West Java during the planting season of 2005. The experiment consisted of several parts: production of suspension and MsNPV formulation from the larvae of ricearmy worm, packing and period storing of MsNPV formulation, observe the effect of MsNPV formulation on rice army worm in the rice fileds. Results from these studies show that the number of larvae used will effect production of suspension and formulation of MsNPV. The number of larvae used would increase the production of suspension and the value of formulation will also increase. While method of packing, period of time and location of storing showed that time period of 1; 2; and 3 months at different colour of plastic also location of storing refrigerator vs room temperature did not effect on mortality of larvae rice armyworm.

Abstract

The study was conducted at the laboratory and cacao plantation in Kaliwining Jember, during August to November 2008. The objective of this research was to study the effect of B. bassiana on the mortality of larvae, pupae and adults of O. smaragdina. A factorial completly randomized design was used in the laboratory experiment. Two factors were tested in the experiment, the first factor was spore concentration; the second factor was the stadia of the ants (larva, pupa and adult). The experiment was replicated, 4 (four) times. The field research used a randomized block complete design with four treatments and four replications. Results of this study showed that B. bassiana was the mortality source of larva, pupa and adult stages of O. smaragdina. A concentration of 108 spores/ml B. bassiana was effective to control larvae and pupae of O. smaragdina.
