Abstract

Nationalism and nationality of a country life are moving into the new phase. Internet has become a new medium that opens up so many opportunities to create a sense of nationalism for the country. This paper contains a review of nationalism in the age of the Internet. This paper begins with understanding nationalism, the character of the Internet, social media and nationalism in the era of the Internet. Research method used in this paper is literature study, continued with reflective data analysis. With reflective analysis method, the authors analyzed data from the data collection has been carried out for comparison between the existing literature by circumstances or phenomena that occur, so that the conclusions of rational and scientific data can be obtained.

Abstract

Painting ‘Hidup Ini Indah Apapun Keadaannya’ was made to commemorate the 5.9 magnitude earthquake occurred in Yogyakarta. This painting shows an unusual visual and illustration with depth of meaning. The relationship between symbols, shapes, and colors could give unique impression to the person who saw it. It became interesting to examine this painting using iconography method. This article examined relevant dimensions existing in the portrait, such as: theological, ethical, cultural anthropology, and psychology. These dimensions are perceived to be able to convey the message and profound meaning to the people who look at the painting. Through this painting, art was believed to have strength to create society to be better.

Abstract

This research examined the role of branding and design in the process of city/nation identity creation. Recently, there are a growing phenomenon of branding within cities and/or nations. The growing competition between cities to increase the number of visitors and investors, foreign and domestics, and develop new businesses which in turn could absorb talents and manpowers was the background for the phenomenon. With the development of branding awareness, more and more cities/nations commit to a branding strategy so that they can measure the journey of their city/nation branding. This article began with a number of basic definitions about the city/nation branding concept; and then was followed by the case studies. The sources for this paper are derived from books and journals, the author’s travelling experiences, and articles from the internet regarding the city branding and city tourism.

Abstract

Using structural approach and Tzvetan Todorov’s theory about ‘absolute hesitation’, this research discusses how the narrative and cinematographic elements build Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) as a unique fantastic film. Directed by Guillermo del Toro Pan’s Labyrinth is a film in Spanish about a little girl named Ofelia who has to live in a house in the middle of the forest and experiences many bizarre incidents, including meeting the Faun. The narrative elements discussed in this paper are motives and themes, while the cinematographic elements are settings, lighting and colours. To analyze the data, this research uses a qualitative method that lies on library research. The result of the discussion shows how the intrinsic elements successfully built ‘absolute hesitation’ in Pan’s Labyrinth. Thus, Pan’s Labyrinth can be categorized as a fantastic film with a dark twist that is Del Toro’s irreplaceable characteristic in directing films.

Abstract

This paper, through Singaporean movie I am not Stupid 2, analyzes the relation between parenting and children’s growth process and also the action of parents should do to offer children for having a good growth process. Research was done based on Baumrind theory about parenting analysis to what kind of parenting that the parents of the movie I am not Stupid 2 offer to their children. Research used literature study to summarize, arrange, and analyze of Diana Baumrind as basis of the research. The results show that Tom and Jerry’s parents or Cheng Cai’s father used authoritarian parenting style. Research suggests that the best parenting style is authoritative parenting because this type of parenting does not only concern about the prominence of rules or regulations in the family, but also the affection of parents towards the children. Therefore, the family will certainly become more harmonious.

Abstract

This article describes the role of myth and some universal themes of myth, such as the creation of the world, a huge flood, death, and the end of the world. Almost all the world's myths concern this universal themes, as seen from the similarity of some of the myths followed by many cultures in the world. These myths have primary functions to human’s behavior and attitude because people keep telling almost the same myths to their predecessors. The goals for this research are (1) knowing the functions of myths with famous themes from various culture and (2) knowing the background and relationship between myths and modern culture. The result describes the relationship between the cultural myths, where the core of the story is the truth of humanity. In addition, myth acts as a template to organize their daily activities as well as human activity, but it also serves to introduce human to a greater power in the universe. The values in each story will be interpreted as rules and customs that must be met, and this has resulted in the emergence of a culture passed down from generation to generation.

Abstract

A new tradition in the use of chatting communication technology with mobile phone (cell phone) is more lively with the use of stickers. Stickers are used as a means to increase the emotion expressions of communication users. Current mobile phone technology, along with the development of high specifications (for visual depiction), is adequate to display complex visual. This prompts a new tradition that accepts even to be a new behavior in modern communication methods. Looking at this phenomenon, it is not impossible for an artist to open up the work area (creative economy) and the creation of new business areas in the visual characters of Indonesian culture. This study used the chatting phenomenon with stickers to introduce the culture of the puppet characters with contemporary approach for young people around the world. The method carried out included the depiction of classification of facial expression emotions and collaboration with the approach of some common sticker visualizations. The result was then put into the classification of semiotic theory combining with simplified visual approach to obtain the appropriate visual characterstics of the puppet. Research also involved visual craft of the purwa puppet as visual character basis for character deformation of the contemporary puppet. Thus, the application of visual stickers can be used by users for communication functions.

Abstract

New Shaolin is a famous film from China. The story tells about Houjie’s life and his personality change. Shaolin’s positive influence in Houjie’s life is the main purpose of this research. Research used references and the theory of Sigmund Freud of ID, Ego and Superego to analyze Houjie’s personality change. Result shows thatafter receiving Shaolin’s teaching, he became a better man. In Shaolin, Houjie was forgiven. Shaolin’s teaching such as chanting a scripture can help improve his thoughts. Reflection and Kungfu brought Houjie out of his revenge and bad emotion, also bring harmony to his thoughts and heart. Houjie’s pre-character was dominated by his ID, but after he had entered Shaolin and learned Shaolin’s teaching, Houjie studied how to reach balance in 3 factors mentioned in the theory of personality.

Abstract

Visual illustration does not only cover the aesthetical function, but it also becomes the main part to present visual opinion. Illustration has an ability to deliver something that not only can be seen on the surface; furthermore, it has deeper meaning than written language without to be explicit. This paper begins with a brief explanation about illustration and its visual language. Then it describes the various approaches in conveying the message and its application in illustrations. The research method used in this paper is literature study, followed by a reflective analysis of the data. At the end, article reveals a clearer picture of how ideas conveyed through visual language and its relation to deliver an opinion in a visual form.

Abstract

Tourism is an important determinant for a region’s economic growth—the higher income from tourism, the higher its gross regional domestic product. To be successful in exposing potential tourism sites, a region does not only depend on the beauty of the nature but also how to access the sites, on-site accommodation and the mutual relationship between local government and local community.The fact is many regions have difficulties in developing mutual relationship between local government and local community. It means what most important is how the tourism industry is being managed. One most important aspect of managing the tourism industry is the cooperation and communication between the local community and the government. This article aims to discuss how public relations and the local community work to stimulate tourism growth in a synergy. Using descriptive qualitative method, this article recommends a model of communication strategy—in which the local community serves mainly as the tourism’s public relation agents, and also serves as a reference method in evaluating a local government’s communication strategies in regional tourism industry.
