Abstract

Currently, the online movie streaming business is growing rapidly, such as Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, HBO, and Apple TV. The recommender system helps customers in getting information about movies that are in accordance with their wishes. Meanwhile, the development of messaging platform technology has made it easier for many people to communicate instantly. Utilizing a messaging platform to build a recommender system for movies, provides special benefits because people often access the messaging platform all the time. In the Indonesian language, there are many slang terms that the system must recognize. In this study, we build a chatbot on a messaging platform which users can interact with the system in natural language (in Indonesian language) and get recommendations. We use rule-based and maximum likelihood as a method in natural language processing (NLP), and content-based filtering for the recommendation process. The recommender system interaction is built through a conversation mechanism that will form a conversational recommender system. The interaction is based on a chatbot which is built using Dialogflow and implemented on the telegram. We use the accuracy of recommendations and user satisfaction to evaluate the system performance. The results obtained from the user study indicate that the NLP approach provides a positive experience for users. In addition, the system also produces an accuracy value of 83%.

Abstract

COVID-19 is a pandemic that has occurred in the world since 2019. Researchers have carried out various ways in dealing with this disease, starting from the screening stage to the stage of treatment and therapy for COVID-19 patients. As the gateway to the COVID-19 problem, screening has an essential role in a diagnosis that leads to appropriate treatment. In this paper, we will focus on the screening stage using digital image processing techniques, namely in calculating the area of white spots in the lungs of COVID-19 patients. The white patches are an early indication of how badly COVID-19 is attacking the patient. We use X-Ray Thorax image objects as research data in this paper. Although the current experimental results show that this method has a successful performance of 71.11%, it is pretty promising for further development due to its simplicity.

Abstract

Even though coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination has been done, preparedness for the possibility of the next outbreak wave is still needed with new mutations and virus variants. A near real-time surveillance system is required to provide the stakeholders, especially the public, to act in a timely response. Due to the hierarchical structure, epidemic reporting is usually slow particularly when passing jurisdictional borders. This condition could lead to time gaps for public awareness of new and emerging events of infectious diseases. Online news is a potential source for COVID-19 monitoring because it reports almost every infectious disease incident globally. However, the news does not report only about COVID-19 events, but also various information related to COVID-19 topics such as the economic impact, health tips, and others. We developed a framework for online news monitoring and applied sentence classification for news titles using deep learning to distinguish between COVID-19 events and non-event news. The classification results showed that the fine-tuned bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT) trained with Bahasa Indonesia achieved the highest performance (accuracy: 95.16%, precision: 94.71%, recall: 94.32%, F1-score: 94.51%). Interestingly, our framework was able to identify news that reports the new COVID strain from the United Kingdom (UK) as an event news, 13 days before the Indonesian officials closed the border for foreigners.

Abstract

Facial expression recognition is an important part in the field of affective computing. Automatic analysis of human facial expression is a challenging problem with many applications. Most of the existing automated systems for facial expression analysis attempt to recognize a few prototypes emotional expressions such as anger, contempt, disgust, fear, happiness, neutral, sadness, and surprise. This paper aims to compare feature extraction methods that are used to detect human facial expression. The study compares the gray level co-occurrence matrix, local binary pattern, and facial landmark (FL) with two types of facial expression datasets, namely Japanese female facial expression (JFFE), and extended Cohn-Kanade (CK+). In addition, we also propose an enhancement of extreme learning machine (ELM) method that can adaptively select best number of hidden neurons adaptive ELM (aELM) to reach its maximum performance. The result from this paper is our proposed method can slightly improve the performance of basic ELM method using some feature extractions mentioned before. Our proposed method can obtain maximum mean accuracy score of 88.07% on CK+ dataset, and 83.12% on JFFE dataset with FL feature extraction.

Abstract

The growth of abnormal cells in the brain’s tissue causes brain tumors. Brain tumors are considered one of the most dangerous disorders in children and adults. It develops quickly, and the patient’s survival prospects are slim if not appropriately treated. Proper treatment planning and precise diagnoses are essential to improving a patient’s life expectancy. Brain tumors are mainly diagnosed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). As part of a convolution neural network (CNN)-based illustration, an architecture containing five convolution layers, five max-pooling layers, a Flatten layer, and two dense layers has been proposed for detecting brain tumors from MRI images. The proposed model includes an automatic feature extractor, modified hidden layer architecture, and activation function. Several test cases were performed, and the proposed model achieved 98.6% accuracy and 97.8% precision score with a low cross-entropy rate. Compared with other approaches such as adjacent feature propagation network (AFPNet), mask region-based CNN (mask RCNN), YOLOv5, and Fourier CNN (FCNN), the proposed model has performed better in detecting brain tumors.

Abstract

On the ever-rising urgency of global food security, efforts are required to develop a robust farming technique. This includes the capability of farming in non-agricultural land or indoor spaces. Farming in the air medium, i.e., aeroponic, has persistently stepped in as a viable solution. Aeroponic farming allows efficient water usage while preventing soil related diseases and pests. With the assistance of light emitting diodes (LEDs) and precise electronic monitoring and control, aeroponic may become the suitable farming technique of the future. This work presents an aeroponic system capable of automated monitoring and control of farming parameters. The system achieved both robustness in indoor farming and remote access by employing LED as an artificial lighting system and the internet-of-things (IoT) connectivity, respectively. The test result demonstrated that the system successfully maintained the root chamber temperature below 30 °C with a typical average temperature of 28.8 °C. The system managed a humidity level which prevented plants from drying out. It was also evident that the LED assistance significantly improved the growth quality of Ipomea reptans. The system, data, and analysis presented in this work is expected to facilitate further development of a robust food production system in overcoming the global food crisis.

Abstract

Analyzing X-rays and computed tomography-scan (CT scan) images using a convolutional neural network (CNN) method is a very interesting subject, especially after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. In this paper, a study is made on 423 patients’ CT scan images from Al-Kadhimiya (Madenat Al Emammain Al Kadhmain) hospital in Baghdad, Iraq, to diagnose if they have COVID or not using CNN. The total data being tested has 15000 CT-scan images chosen in a specific way to give a correct diagnosis. The activation function used in this research is the wavelet function, which differs from CNN activation functions. The convolutional wavelet neural network (CWNN) model proposed in this paper is compared with regular convolutional neural network that uses other activation functions (exponential linear unit (ELU), rectified linear unit (ReLU), Swish, Leaky ReLU, Sigmoid), and the result is that utilizing CWNN gave better results for all performance metrics (accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision, and F1-score). The results obtained show that the prediction accuracies of CWNN were 99.97%, 99.9%, 99.97%, and 99.04% when using wavelet filters (rational function with quadratic poles (RASP1), (RASP2), and polynomials windowed (POLYWOG1), superposed logistic function (SLOG1)) as activation function, respectively. Using this algorithm can reduce the time required for the radiologist to detect whether a patient has COVID or not with very high accuracy.

Abstract

Automatic speech recognition system is one of the essential ways of interaction with machines. Interests in speech based intelligent systems have grown in the past few decades. Therefore, there is a need to develop more efficient methods for human speech recognition to ensure the reliability of communication between individuals and machines. This paper is concerned with Arabic phoneme recognition of electrolarynx device. Electrolarynx is a device used by cancer patients having vocal laryngeal cords removed. Speech recognition here is considered to find the preferred machine learning model that can classify phonemes produced by electrolarynx device. The phonemes recognition employs different machine learning schemes, including convolutional neural network, recurrent neural network, artificial neural network (ANN), random forest, extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and long short-term memory. Modern standard Arabic is utilized for testing and training phases of the recognition system. The dataset covers both an ordinary speech and electrolarynx device speech recorded by the same person. Mel frequency cepstral coefficients are considered as speech features. The results show that the ANN machine learning method outperformed other methods with an accuracy rate of 75%, a precision value of 77%, and a phoneme error rate (PER) of 21.85%.

Abstract

As the cause of the breast cancer disease has not yet clearly identified and a method to prevent its occurrence has not yet been developed, its early detection has a significant role in enhancing survival rate. In fact, artificial intelligent approaches have been playing an important role to enhance the diagnosis process of breast cancer. This work has selected eight classification models that are mostly used to predict breast cancer to be under investigation. These classifiers include single and ensemble classifiers. A trusted dataset has been enhanced by applying five different feature selection methods to pick up only weighted features and to neglect others. Accordingly, a dataset of only 17 features has been developed. Based on our experimental work, three classifiers, multi-layer perceptron (MLP), support vector machine (SVM) and stack are competing with each other by attaining high classification accuracy compared to others. However, SVM is ranked on the top by obtaining an accuracy of 97.7% with classification errors of 0.029 false negative (FN) and 0.019 false positive (FP). Therefore, it is noteworthy to mention that SVM is the best classifier and it outperforms even the stack classier.

Abstract

This research aims to connect wind turbines to a distribution grid to minimize the power loss and to satisfy the grid’s normal operating condition. The proposed algorithm will determine optimal positions, optimal operation mode and wind turbine type. We must choose the best operation mode from available modes including the constant power factor mode and the constant voltage mode. According to the optimal operation mode, we decide the optimal setting data of wind turbine. This algorithm is coded in MATLAB software and implemented to IEEE 33-buses distribution grid. Noted that in this research, we tested two cases including the original IEEE 33-buses grid and its modification where the power system connected to this grid at multi-position. Results indicated that the proposed algorithm could determine the number of wind turbines, position, optimal operation mode, wind turbine type and the priority order of wind turbine installation to minimize power loss. Moreover, results were also compared to that of other algorithms.
