Abstract

Ancient manuscripts written in Malay-Arabic characters, which are known as "Jawi" characters, are mostly found in Malay world. Nowadays, many of the manuscripts have been digitalized. Unlike Roman letters, there is no optical character recognition (OCR) software for Jawi characters. This article proposes a new algorithm for Jawi character recognition based on Hu’s moment as an invariant feature that we call the tree root (TR) algorithm. The TR algorithm allows every Jawi character to have a unique combination of moment. Seven values of the Hu’s moment are calculated from all Jawi characters, which consist of 36 isolated, 27 initial, 27 middle, and 35 end characters; this makes a total of 125 characters. The TR algorithm was then applied to recognize these characters. To assess the TR algorithm, five characters that had been rotated to 90o and 180o and scaled with factors of 0.5 and 2 were used. Overall, the recognition rate of the TR algorithm was 90.4%; 113 out of 125 characters have a unique combination of moment values, while testing on rotated and scaled characters achieved 82.14% recognition rate. The proposed method showed a superior performance compared with the Support Vector Machine and Euclidian Distance as classifier.

Abstract

Retinal disease is the very important issue in medical field. To diagnose the disease, it needs to detect the true retinal area. Artefacts like eyelids and eyelashes are come along with retinal part so removal of artefacts is the big task for better diagnosis of disease into the retinal part.  In this paper, we have proposed the segmentation and use machine learning approaches to detect the true retinal part. Preprocessing is done on the original image using Gamma Normalization which helps to enhance the image  that can gives detail information about the image. Then the segmentation is performed on the Gamma Normalized image by Superpixel method. Superpixel is the group of pixel into different regions which is based on compactness and regional size. Superpixel is used to reduce the complexity of image processing task and provide suitable primitive image pattern. Then feature generation must be done and machine learning approach helps to extract true retinal area. The experimental evaluation gives the better result with accuracy of 96%.

Abstract

A novel and compact multi-band stop filter using two different structures of circular DGS and circular DGS loaded with O-DGS unit, has good selectivity and  wide upper pass band performance  with good rejection based on defected ground structure (DGS) integrating a circular ring  resonator to suppress undesired spurious bands frequency or harmonics in radio frequency and microwave circuits is proposed. An equivalent circuit model has been derived for the both structures of circular DGS and circular DGS loaded. The presented filter has a compact size because the circular ring resonator is integrated in DGS, the both of them are etching in the ground plane. The proposed filter presents an optimization method for generating multi-band characteristics without using a periodic cells or other complicate topology. The simulated results by ADS Agilent are presented and compared with the results simulated by two others software: CST and HFSS. Good agreement between the three simulated results is observed.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is one of the urgent health problems in the world. Diabetes is a condition primarily defined by the level of hyperglycemia giving rise to risk of micro vascular damage. Those who suffer from this disease generally do not realize and tend to overlook the early symptoms. Late recognition of these early symptoms may drive the disease to a more concerning level. One solution to solve this problem is to create an application that may perform early detection of diabetes mellitus so that it does not grow larger. In this article, a new method in performing early detection of diabetes mellitus is suggested. This method is backpropagation with three optimization namely early initialization with Nguyen-Widrow algorithm, learning rate adaptive determination, and determination of weight change by applying momentum coefficient. The observation is conducted by collecting 150 data consisting of 79 diabetes mellitus patient and 71 non diabetes mellitus patient data. The result of this study is the suggested algorithm succeeds in detecting diabetes mellitus with accuracy rate of 99.33%. Optimized backpropagation algorithm may allow the training process goes 12.4 times faster than standard backpropagation.

Abstract

Most modern web applications use some kind of front-end frameworks for designing and creating content in a faster and more efficient way, which saves valuable time when creating responsive web sites. There are many front-end frameworks that vary enormously in terms of features and benefits, which could make the choice of front-end framework for the developer tricky. In this context, this paper focuses on an effective analysis of two of today's most popular front-end frameworks, Boostrap and Foundation, The results show that our analysis can be beneficial for developers to select the appropriate front end framework to customize their web applications.

Abstract

Unpredictable increase in power demands will overload the supply subsystems and insufficiently powered systems will suffer from instabilities, in which voltages drop below acceptable levels. Additional power sources are needed to satisfy the demand. Small capacity distributed generators (DGs) serve for this purpose well. One advantage of DGs is that they can be installed close to loads, so as to minimise loses. Optimum placements and sizing of DGs are critical to increase system voltages and to reduce loses. This will finally increase the overall system efficiency. This work exploits Quantum Evolutionary Algorithm (QEA) for the placements and sizing. This optimisation targets the cheapest generation cost. Quantum Evolutionary Algorithm is an Evolutionary Algorithm running on quantum computing, which works based on qubits and states superposition of quantum mechanics. Evolutionary algorithm with qubit representation has a better characteristic of diversity than classical approaches, since it can represent superposition of states.

Abstract

Given the growing need for long haul transmission that requires a high rate of data, the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing scheme (OFDM), is regarded as a technique with high potentials for high-capacity optical networks. OFDM transmits over both optical and wireless channels, with the data distributed over a huge amount of the subcarrier, and the data is distributed over a huge number of subcarriers. OFDM achieves RF signal for a long-haul transmitting by utilizing Radio over Fiber (RoF) system, which is known to produce higher orthogonality of the OFDM modulated signal designed for the wireless network. RoF systems comprise of heterogeneous networks designed through the use of wireless and optical links. The aim of this paper is to carry out an investigation of the performance of the external modulation in RoF links, while analyzing the shortcomings caused by the various elements of the optical system. The Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM) can be applied in external modulation, and exhibits a more robust performance when implemented with the OFDM modulation technique.

Abstract

Tropospheric scintillation is a rapid fluctuation of the received signal amplitude which can cause propagation impairments that affect satellite communication systems operating above 10 GHz. Scintillation data was collected in Equatorial Johor Bahru, Malaysia, based on a one-year Ku-band propagation measurement campaign, utilizing MEASAT-1 Satellite with an antenna elevation angle of 75.61°. This work concentrates on the probability density function (PDF) of diurnal variations of clear sky scintillation variance analyzed on an hourly basis. Besides, seasonal variation of scintillation amplitude has been presented in this paper. From the results, it is concluded that clear sky scintillation variance is likely to occur during morning and afternoon periods. Moreover, clear sky scintillation amplitude of the South-West monsoon shows a relatively higher comparing with others monsoon seasons. Abstract

In this Paper presents the result for different dielectric constant values and the result is performed by thickness of 2.88mm and resonance frequency of 2GHz where 2.32 (Duroid) are gives the best result. In the recent years the development in communication systems requires the development of low cost, minimal weight, low profile antennas   that are capable of maintaining high performance over a wide spectrum of frequencies.  This technological trend has focused much effort into the design of a Microstrip patch antenna. The proposed antenna design on different dielectric constant and analyzed result of all dielectric constant between 1 to 10, when the proposed antenna designs on Duroid substrate with dielectric constant 2.32. At 2GHz the verify and tested result on MATLAB are Radiation Efficiency=91.99%, Directivity=5.4dBi, Directive gain=4.98dBi and Half Power Beam Width-H plane=99.6123 degrees.DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v2i3.341

Abstract

The brain dominance is referred to right brain and left brain. The brain dominance can be observed with an Electroencephalogram (EEG) signal to identify different types of electrical pattern in the brain and will form the foundation of one’s personality. The objective of this project is to analyze brain dominance by using Wavelet analysis. The Wavelet analysis is done in 2-D Gabor Wavelet and the result of 2-D Gabor Wavelet is validated with an establish brain dominance questionnaire. Twenty-one samples from University Malaysia Pahang (UMP) student are required to answer the establish brain dominance questionnaire has been collected in this experiment. Then, brainwave signal will record using Emotiv device. The threshold value is used to remove the artifact and noise from data collected to acquire a smoother signal. Next, the Band-pass filter is applied to the signal to extract the sub-band frequency components from Delta, Theta, Alpha, and Beta. After that, it will extract the energy of the signal from image feature extraction process. Next the features were classified by using K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) in two ratios which 70:30 and 80:20 that are training set and testing set (training: testing). The ratio of 70:30 gave the highest percentage of 83% accuracy while a ratio of 80:20 gave 100% accuracy. The result shows that 2-D Gabor Wavelet was able to classify brain dominance with accuracy 83% to 100%.
