Abstract

Cloud computing has been widely accepted by the researchers for the web applications. During the past years, distributed computing replaced the centralized computing and finally turned towards the cloud computing. One can see lots of applications of cloud computing like online sale and purchase, social networking web pages, country wide virtual classes, digital libraries, sharing of pathological research labs, supercomputing and many more. Creating and allocating VMs to applications use virtualization concept. Resource allocates policies and load balancing polices play an important role in managing and allocating resources as per application request in a cloud computing environment. Cloud analyst is a GUI tool that simulates the cloud-computing environment. In the present work, the cloud servers are arranged through step network and a UML model for a minimization of energy consumption by processor, dynamic random access memory, hard disk, electrical components and mother board is developed. A well Unified Modeling Language is used for design of a class diagram. Response time and internet characteristics have been demonstrated and computed results are depicted in the form of tables and graphs using the cloud analyst simulation tool.

Abstract

This paper presents the investigation of the surface tracking on pressboard surface immersed in MIDEL eN oil.  In this work, the development of surface discharge was analyzed by correlating the visual records of surface tracking on impregnated pressboard and the partial discharge (PD) activities.  The PD activities during the surface tracking process were analyzed in terms of Phase Resolved Partial Discharge (PRPD) patterns.  Throughout the experiment, surface discharge is found as the development of tree-like patterns in the form of white marks occurring on the oil-pressboard interface.  This phenomenon is generally accepted as the drying out process that involves evaporation and decomposition of the oil molecules in the pressboard pores due to the surface discharge activities on the pressboard surface layer.  The development of surface discharge on the pressboard surface can continue from minutes to months or even years until failure.  Thus, condition monitoring system is important to characterize this type of faulty condition.  The experimental results show that there is the decreasing trend of PD magnitude during the development of white mark hallway of a gap distance which is eventually suffered from an unexpected fault.

Abstract

In the most of the real world scenarios, wireless sensor networks are used. Some of the major tasks of these types of networks is to sense some information and sending it to monitoring system or tracking some activity etc. In such applications, the sensor nodes are deployed in large area and in considerably large numbers [1]-[3]. Each of these node will be having constrained resources whether it might be energy, memory or processing capability. Energy is the major resource constraint in these types of networks. Hence enough care to be taken in all aspects such that energy can be used very efficiently. Different Activities which will be taking place in a sensor node are sensing, radio operations and receiving and computing. Among all these operations, radio consumes maximum power. Hence there is a need of reducing the power consumption in such radio operations. In the proposed work a software module is developed which will reduce the number of transmissions done to the base station. The work compares the consecutively sensed data and if these data are same then the old data then the old data will be retained. In other case the newly sensed data will be sent to the sink node. This technique reduces the number of data transmissions in a significant way. With the reduced number of transmissions, the energy saved in each node will be more, which will increase the lifetime of the entire network.

Abstract

Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks based networks consists of large number of tiny sensor nodes with limited resources. These nodes are directly connected to the Internet through the border router. Hence these nodes are susceptible to different types of attacks. The possible attacks are rank attack, selective forwarding, worm hole and Denial of service attack. These attacks can be effectively identified by intrusion detection system model. The paper focuses on identification of multiple intrusions by considering the network size as 10, 40 and 100 nodes and adding 10%, 20% and 30% of malicious nodes to the considered network. Experiments are simulated using Cooja simulator on Contiki operating system. Behavior of the network is observed based on the percentage of inconsistency achieved, energy consumption, accuracy and false positive rate. Experimental results show that multiple intrusions can be detected effectively by machine learning techniques.

Abstract

S-bend contributes the high losses in the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) large cross-section rib waveguide (LCRW). The objective of this work is to investigate S-bend SOI LCRW with two different single-mode dimensions named symmetrical and asymmetrical. The S-bend SOI LCRW has been simulating using beam propagation method in OptiBPM software. The asymmetrical waveguide with two different dimension arc given the best performance if compared to others dimension with 3 µm of waveguide spacing. It achieved 92.24% and 91.10% of normalized output power (NOP) for 1550 nm and 1480 nm wavelength respectively. Moreover, the minimum of S-bend spacing between the two cores is 0.9 µm for both 1550 nm and 1480 nm. Therefore, asymmetrical waveguide with two different dimension arc and 0.9 µm of S-bend spacing are chosen. This analysis is important to determine the right parameter in order to design the SOI passive devices. However, future work should be done to see the performance by designing the coupler and implement in the real system.

Abstract

In recent years, the importance of the mobile edge computing (MEC) paradigm along with the 5G, the Internet of Things (IoT) and virtualization of network functions is well noticed. Besides, the implementation of computation-intensive applications at the mobile device level is limited by battery capacity, processing capabalities and execution time. To increase the batteries life and improve the quality of experience for computationally intensive and latency-sensitive applications, offloading some parts of these applications to the MEC is proposed. This paper presents a solution for a hard decision problem that jointly optimizes the processing time and computing resources in a mobile edge-computing node. Hence, we consider a mobile device with an offloadable list of heavy tasks and we jointly optimize the offloading decisions and the allocation of IT resources to reduce the latency of tasks’ processing. Thus, we developped a heuristic solution based on the simulated annealing algorithm, which can improve the offloading rate and reduce the total task latency while meeting short decision time. We performed a series of experiments to show its efficiency. Finally, the obtained results in terms of full-time treatrement are very encouraging. In addition, our solution makes offloading decisions within acceptable and achievable deadlines.

Abstract

This article addresses a multi-agent approach to solving the problem of integrating metacognitive incentives into Learning Management System. The behavior of the teacher in a classroom-teaching situation, where teacher adopting the competency-based approach, is characterized by a set of didactic interventions dynamically adaptable according to the actions-reactions of the learners. These interventions are continually subjected to perfection by experience. In this article, we are interested in modeling the multi-agent system in order to help the learners develop their metacognitive skills in a continuous way. The purpose of this system is to supervise the activities and statements of the learner and communicate them to the metacognitive agent. The latter focuses on the assessment of the learner's metacognitive skills in order to trigger, automatically, metacognitive incentives to provide help messages. Integrating the agent for metacognitive control and assistance, allows learners to maintain motivation and confidence, and elicit their attention to the importance of metacognitive skills during learning activity. The "MaSE" methodology and the "agentTool" are used to model the multi-agent system.

Abstract

Quality control in Tiles Industry is of great importance. Therefore, it is effective to improve an automatic inspection system, instead of manpower, to increase accuracy and velocity and decrease costs. To this end, a new method to segment tile surfaces is offered in this study. This method aims at detecting defective areas in a tile, based on extracting features of edge defects. This method is based on the idea that human eye can better perceive the defects in a tile by looking at its edges. In the proposed method, first, in order to extract frequency characteristics resistant against transference, Undecimated Discrete Wavelet Packets transform is applied on images. Later, by computing local entropy values on high-frequency sub-bands images, those which appropriately include images defects are chosen to extract statistical features. Finally, Back propagation neural network method is used to determine segmented images containing defective areas. The obtained results, both visually and computationally indicates the higher efficacy of this method compared with the related state of the art methods.DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v3i4.3014

Abstract

Protection coordination as well as anti-island protection play significant role in the process of biomass power plant connection on the distribution network. Distribution generation island operation in Croatia is unacceptable according to the existing National grid code Paper presents a protection coordination of all passive protections used in the real biomass power plant and connected distriubution network feeder. Short-circuits three phase, two phase and single line to ground faults and generator islanding simulations have been performed and simulated in the time domain at the different network  locations using DIgSILENT Power Factory software. The time-current plots coordination of protective devices are made using Smart PDC module in Easy Power Protector software tool.

Abstract

Solar energy is the most widely shared and abundant source all over the world. This kind of energy is exploited to produce electricity directly by the solar photovoltaic cell. Indeed, silicon  photovoltaic cells are the most widely spread technology. In the present article, we reported a numerical simulation of the interdigitated back contact (IBC) solar cell in order to obtain a higher conversion efficiency. The structure was realized on a p-type multi-crystalline silicon substrate, a p+ type amorphous silicon FSF, an n- type amorphous silicon based emitter, and a p- type BSF. The position of the emitter and the BSF were interdigitated and covered with ohmic contacts. The numerical simulation was carried out by SILVACO software under the Atlas module. The surface of structure was of a value of 10 cm2 under illumination AM1.5g. We studied the effect of the geometrical and the physical parameters of the structure with IBC on the performance of the cell. The optimum obtained conversion efficiency was 20.83%; this result confirms the potential of the heterojunction silicon technology.
