The study is aimed at investigating the way the participants develop the topics in chatting, synchronous computer mediated interaction. Data were obtained from lobbies of several chatrooms at yahoo.com. The findings revealed that the topic being developed by the participants did not necessarily in line with the topic prescribed by administrator of each room. The newly joined participants marked the introduction of the topic using metacomment while the current participants introduce the topic apruptly. The closing of the topic tend to be aprupt when the participants move to the other topic or sub topic newly introduced. The relational closeness between topics showed that the topic digressed fastly and there were no return to the previously discussed topics. Topic development in chat might produce linier and parallel sequences. Linier sequences appeared when the participants discuss one topic at one time while parallel sequences appeared when several sub-topic discussed together at the same time. Teaching and learning languages involve more than targeting grammatical and lexical knowledge. To achieve communicative competence in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context, EFL learners need to develop their intercultural competence. This article proposes one of influential aspects of target culture (i.e. stereotypes) that may be encountered by EFL learners in learning. Further, the author argues why learners need to be exposed with stereotyping features across cultures and how this can be incorporated into English Language Teaching (ELT) by providing an example of teaching activities that can be adapted in a language classroom. Briefly, it is expected that this article may provide EFL teachers with a better understanding of integrating intercultural elements of a target language in their teaching practice. In turn, this may be useful to facilitate EFL learners in developing their intercultural communicative competence particularly with regards to cultural stereotype features.

This paper reflects on the need of students of English language to experience 'English-speaking culture'. Due to the scarcity of natural contexts to communicate in English in West Sumatra it falls to English teachers to provide both English-speaking context and ongoing cross cultural analysis. Some ways teachers across the curriculum can provide a context of English-speaking culture and implement cross cultural analysis while teaching are discussed. The 'onion' model of culture is presented to show that culture is not only 'what' but also 'how' and 'why'.  Examples are given of how culture can be explicitly and implicitly taught. There is a tendency of cases in transforming spoken and written language. A current debate was proposed about the role. This debate derives from current phenomenon which shows evidence which is related with learner mastery in the particular skills. Some learners are able to produce spoken form of language fluently, however, when it comes to writing, it is seen that they find difficulties and get disturbance to put down ideas and elaborate the ideas into a good writing. Â Hence, two questions arise. First, to what extent is the nature of spoken and written language? Second, what are strategies to help learners in transforming their spoken language to the written production? Therefore, this article is proposed to explain the nature of spoken and written language and present any strategies to help learners in transforming their spoken language into the written forms.

Subtitling is a kind of audiovisual translation/AVT. Translating oral dialogue into text (subtitling) has various aspects that must be considered, such as time exposure, space limitation. Related to sociolinguistic aspect, it is also known that language user and usage determined by various factor such as age, sex, and profession. One of the objects in sociolinguistics is register, a language variation, that exist in any social group. This research is aimed at discovering the ways of subtitler translating military register as the character of a social group. The tentative finding shows that military register tends to be translated in general term. Â Keyword: subtitling, military register, audiovisual translation

This article is based on an annotated translation research. The object of the research is an English novel My Lover My Friend, written by Suprina Frazier. The purpose of this research are (1) to attain factual information concerning the problems faced by the researcher in translating the source text; (2) to give plausible solutions to the difficulties. In conducting this annotated translation research, the researcher involved the introspective and retrospective research. The result of the research covered two main point. First, the finding reveals that from the 25 difficult problems, six were words, seven were phrases, two were idioms, four were clauses, and six were sentences. However in this journal, the researcher took ten items to be annotated. Second, those difficulties were solved by referring to the relevant theories of translation and English-Indonesian languages.

Students of English Language Teaching Program are required to have the ability to comprehend different kinds of texts or genres. Howewer, their reading ability as reflected in Reading courses and other courses is low. This paper is aimed at describing the students’ perception toward their reading difficulties of different genres. The data presented in this paper are partially derived from the data collected through a descriptive research conducted in 2009/2010 at the English Department of FBSS, State University of Padang. The instrument of the research were a reading test, which was to determine the level of the students in genre awareness and reading comprehension, and interview to gain students’ perception on their reading difficulties. Data were analysed descriptive-qualitatively and descriptive-quantitatively. From the result of the test, the students thus are categorised into high, middle and low achievers. The result of the interview showed that students with different level of comprehension had different difficulties in understanding texts with different genres because of some factors. Thus, improving the syllabus on Reading courses and other related courses such as Writing, TEFL dan Linguistics are considered important. Keywords: perception, genre awareness, reading comprehension

This paper presents one of the ways to improve students’ listening ability in Listening 2 Course. At the English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang listening skill is taught in three different subjects, Listening 1, Listening 2 and Advanced Listening. Listening 2, provides students with the materials of oral communication by English native speakers and English nonnative speakers. Looking at the materials used for Listening 2, it seems that the book does not have enough tasks for the students for it has only two or three tasks for each unit. Those tasks are done in the classroom, and there is no task for homework. Learning Listening as a language skill needs practice inside and outside the classroom. To overcome the lack of task for Listening subject, assigning students to listen to the English news is one of the ways that can be done by the teachers. By assigning students to listen to the English news, whether radio or TV news, will give them real experiences in understanding spoken language.
