Abstract

As the requirement of power increases, the use of renewable energy resources has become prominent. The power collected from these energy resources needs to be converted using AC-DC or DC-DC converters. The control of DC-DC converters is a complex task due to its non-linearity in the converter introduced by the external changes such as source voltage, cable resistance and load variations. Converters are to be designed to obtain a well stabilized output voltage and load current for variable source voltages and load changes. Droop control method is the most abundantly used technique in controlling the parallel converters. The major limitations of the conventional droop control technique are circulating current issues and improper load sharing. The proposed work is to resolve these issues by integrating Sliding Mode Controller (SMC) with the converter in order to enhance the performance of DC microgrid. The entire control system was designed by taking the output voltage error as the control variables. Similarly, droop control with PI and PID were also performed and all these techniques were simulated and compared using MATLAB/Simulink. The experimental results show that the proposed sliding mode controller technique provides good overall performance and is suitable against variable voltage and load changes.

Abstract

This work analyses and evaluates the performance of renewable energy sources-based converters using Intelligent techniques. The objective of the research is to maintain the reliability of the converters such that it decreases the switching losses, high duty cycle and recycles the leakage energy. To accomplish the high output voltage gain converters are designed with different intelligent methods. Due to heavy demands, the cost of fossil fuel has gone up.so the need for the time is identifying and developing renewable energy sources along with developing new technologies for energy saving in renewable energy system to fight the issues plaguing the environment.

Abstract

An improved zero-voltage zero-current transition boost converter (IZVZCTBC) is introduced. This converter is basically a fourth-order DC-DC converter wherein a L-C-S (Inductor–Capacitor–Switch) resonant circuit is embedded for soft-switching. L-C-S tank network is the modified version of conventional ZVZCT switch cell. The main feature of L-C-S tank circuit is to enhance the performance of zero-voltage zero-current transition boost converter in terms of eliminating the high current stress, decreasing the switching losses and increasing the efficiency of converter. This converter exhibits both zero-voltage turn on and zero-current turn off switching characteristics based on the gating signals applied to switches. The principle of operation and time domain expressions of IZVZCT boost converter with L-C-S cell are presented. For the closed loop operation, digital controller is designed and the performance of the controller has been validated through simulation for different line and load variations. The mathematical and theoretical analysis is verified accurately by a 12-24 V, 30 W converter through PSIM simulation software and the results ensures that overall efficiency of the converter has improved to 97% along with elimination of current stress.

Abstract

Due to a substantial increase in the use of inverter for numerous electrical appliances starting from domestics to industrial drives, an inverter may be directly connected to the power grid system. The dependency on an inverter has been increased over the years. Hence, the proper and efficient design of the inverter will lead to higher efficiency. One of the major challenges is the generation of suitable gate pulses for power switching devices, which in turn depends on the modulation index. The selection of proper modulation index will help in the production of the rated voltage. If the modulation index is less, the duration of on-time pulses will be less and hence, the device's conduction time is also less, thereby the output voltage of the inverter is reduced. A reduced voltage, when applied to an induction motor will have lower speed and even its performance will be sluggish. The speed of the motor improves when it is operated in a closed-loop for the same modulation index. This research paper tries to bring out the effect of modulation index on speed control of an induction motor based on an inverter for both open as well as closed-loop operation. The simulated results indicate that the modulation index in the vicinity to unity will provide rated voltage for the smooth operation of the motor.

Abstract

Microgrids are small-scale power systems destined to supply isolated villages and optimum utilization of renewable energies. For this reason, this paper presents a DC-MG of 150 Kwp to feed an island village. The configuration of the proposed system consists of four interconnected sub-sections supplied by the centralized unit through PV and Wind Distributed Energy Resources DERs, in addition to the supercapacitor storage device. In the other hand, internal batteries of each sub-section cover its load demand separately, where electrical and chemical storage devices can be advantageous hybrid energy storage system HESS for the system. Thus, the control structure of the DC-MG is based on current hysteresis method to assure the charge/discharge operation and the stability of the DC-bus voltage, then a proposed management strategy to manage the shared energy of the DCMG system. The system behavior is tested under variable parameters and conditions using Matlab/Simulink.

Abstract

One drawback of PVs is their low efficiency. As the PVs have a unique maximum Power Point for a specified irradiation level, there must be an effective method for extracting maximum power from the PV module to raise the efficiency. Conventional Perturbation and Observation (P&O) is a simple algorithm for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) but it suffers from oscillation during steady state conditions and is deviated from the maximum power point during slow and rapid irradiation level change. This paper presents a modified P&O by adding variation in PV current as a third in addition to the voltage and power variation parameters. This new algorithm is capable of eliminating the MPPT deviation. To increase the perturbation speed, a double step is taken as the tracking is deviated from the MPP. The modified P&O algorithm is used to control the duty cycle of DC-DC buck converter. The simulation shows that the modified P&O is faster than the conventional. The power loss due to oscillation before attaining the steady state is less for modified P&O. For slow irradiation level change (ramp up 600 to 1000 and ramp down 1000-800) W/m2, the modified P&O shows less tracking diverge. As the irradiation level changes rapidly from 800 to 200 W/m2, it's shown that the modified algorithm attains the steady state faster than the conventional P&O and the average efficiency increased by 4.34%.

Abstract

The queue length is an important parameter used by several companies of traffic management for quantitative analysis of traffic scene. In this paper, we propose a system to measure the queue length. The proposed system contains two principal operations for measuring the queue length the first operation is the motion detection, and the second one is the vehicle detection. The traffic scene is divided into a number of blocks, which have variable sizes based on the camera parameters and the distance between the camera and the position of the block. To minimize the execution time to accord the real-time application, we continuously apply the detection motion operation on the first block of the scene and the queue tail. The vehicle detection algorithm is based on the edge detection and the vehicle features extraction to improve the detection of vehicle and minimize the error of detection of the other things? edges (damaged of road, the mark of the road, the shadow of trees or building). The algorithm is applied to videos obtained by stationary camera. The obtained results demonstrate the robustness and accuracy of the proposed system.

Abstract

This paper proposes a Hybridized Symmetric Cascaded Multilevel Inverter for voltage levels ranging from 5 levels to 17 levels. The proposed Multi Level Inverter (MLI) topology is built using a modified H-bridge inverter that results in an increased output voltage levels with a smaller number of solid-state switches. This technique enhances the h-bridge configuration from three level to five level by means of a bi-directional switch at source. Gating pulses of hybridized symmetric MLI are generated through staircase modulation. The operation and performance of the proposed topology is tested for different output voltage levels, simulation results prove that the proposed technique results in less THD at all levels with lesser power consumption and are easily applicable for renewable energy applications.

Abstract

The paper presents the mathematical modeling for battery pack sizing to evaluate the vehicle energy consumption by using the derivation from Parametric Analytical Model of Vehicle Energy Consumption (PAMVEC) by Simpson in R Studio. The assess of storage batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) application is presented in this paper. The main source of power in EVs are batteries and to properly optimize their use in them, a parametric vehicle dynamic model is created and factors like battery mass, energy needed for the EV etc. are predicted using inputs such as battery specific energy, range etc. An assessment of output parameters is performed by using different batteries and compared to determine best battery for EV application.
