Abstract

Saving energy and greenhouse gas emissions in commercial buildings become a very serious request of buildings’ designers and engineering crew. The goal behind the current research is to high light and demonstrate the outcome of utilizing advance and intelligent building management system (IBMS) based in utilizing a fuzzy logic controller that allows the usage and the control of natural light (day light). The fuzzy logic controller (FLC) was sat to control the buildings dimming system while utilizing natural light which normally allows to add outdoors illuminance into the inside ones. This control system is significant mean technique that can be used in intelligent buildings commercial buildings, hence energy savings and consequently, greenhouse gas emissions reduction. The proposed control system relies on enumerating the outdoor and the indoor illuminance and allowing some add-on controllers in order to put into effect a photometric computer that capable of comparing and tasking decisions to regulate rooms lighting fixtures. The article also demonstrates energy savings using this technique and then suggest proper markets for using this controlling system whether during the buildings’ design stage, existing commercial buildings.

Abstract

A Quasi Z-Source (qZS) network has been utilized in a B4 inverter topology to provide voltage boosting effect by turning on the upper and lower switches simultaneously which is known as zero shoot-through states. However, the design of a qZS B4 inverter is not as straightforward as adding a qZS LC impedance network to the front-end of a B4 inverter. This is because there is no zero vectors available in a B4 inverter topology to insert the shoot through zero states, as in the case of a B6 inverter. This paper proposes a new Space Vector Modulation (SVM) technique for a qZS B4 inverter. Additional zero vectors have been appropriately added and distributed in the proposed SVM to avoid altering the existing volt-sec per switching cycle for the existing active vectors. The voltage vectors switching placement is carefully designed in order to enable the voltage boosting effect for this topology without altering the initial output voltage. In addition, an approach to compensate the DC-link voltage ripple has also been taken into consideration in its initial calculation to achieve balanced output voltage. The performance of the proposed modulation technique is verified using MATLAB/Simulink. It is shown that by using the proposed modulation technique, there is an overall improvement on the line to line output voltage where by it is able to produce balanced output voltages for the three-phase loads with or without boosting effect.

Abstract

This paper proposes a new technique for a voltage source multilevel inverter (MLI) with reduced switch count, and it creates a smoother sinusoidal output waveform with reduced total harmonic distortion (THD). Therefore, the proposed technique identifies a better position in the list of multilevel converters used for power quality conditioners. Semiconducting devices are added to it if the number of levels increases. In this work, the topology of MLI with reduced number of switches is presented. A new MLI is proposed with lower number of switches and sources in order to achieve higher level. The proposed topology is framed out with the combination of three half bridge and a single H-bridge configuration. Detailed simulation results for 15-level inverter of single and three phase inverters are presented in this paper. Three phase 15-level inverter is developed by employing three isolated different renewable sources and 21 switches.

Abstract

This paper proposes a non-cascade -single loop- Direct Speed Control algorithm for surface mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) fed by Matrix Converter. The proposed method uses Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) to manipulate system speed and currents simultaneously. Also, for better performance of the predictive method, an observer designed to estimate mechanical torque and other uncertain parameters of the mechanical subsystem as a lumped disturbance. Simulation results using Matlab/Simulink demonstrate the performance of proposed algorithm.

Abstract

Silicon (Si) based power devices have been employed in most high power applications since decades ago. However, nowadays, most major applications demand higher efficiency and power density due to various reasons. The previously well-known Si devices, unfortunately, have reached their performance limitation to cover all those requirements. Therefore, Silicon Carbide (SiC) with its unique and astonishing characteristic has gained huge attention, particularly in the power electronics field. Comparing both, SiC presents a remarkable ability to enhance overall system performance and the transition from Si to SiC is crucial. With regard to its importance, this paper provides an overview of the characteristics, advantages, and outstanding capabilities in various application for SiC devices. Furthermore, it is also important to disclose the system design challenges, which are discussed at the end of the paper.

Abstract

Magnetic bearing is well-known for its advantage of reducing friction in rotary machines and is placing conventional bearings where high-speed operations and cleanliness are essential. It can be shown that the AM is a nonlinear system due to the relation between the magnetic force and current/rotor displacement. In this paper, a mathematical model of a 4-DOF AMB supported by four dual electric magnets is presented. The control objective is placed in a view of control input saturation and output limitation that are meaningful aspect in practical applications. Backstepping algorithm based control strategy is then adopted in order to achieve the high dynamic performance of the bearing. The control is designed in such a way that it takes input and output constraints into account by flexibly using hyperbolic tangent and barrier Lyapunov functions. Informative simulation studies are carried out to understand the operations of the machine and evaluate the controller quality.

Abstract

This paper introduces a modified multilevel inverter topology with asymmetrical dc sources combination. The significant features of the proposed circuit are the reduced number of switches and low total standing voltage (TSV). Proposed topology utilizes ten switches to produce 13 level output with per unit TSVp.u of 5.33. An additional feature of the proposed topology is the inherent negative level generation as there is no requirement of an H-bridge for the polarity reversals. Nearest level control (NLC) technique is used as the modulation strategy. Performance of the proposed topology is validated through extensive analysis using Simulink and PLECS software. Detailed circuit analysis and its power loss, as well as efficiency studies, have been carried out under constant and dynamic load conditions. Results obtained shows that the proposed topology is working well, producing an output of 13-level with total harmonic distortion of 6.36% and inverter efficiency of 98.8%. The topology is extended to n-level structure, and its generalized expressions for different parameters were formulated. The comparison of the generalized structure with other existing topology is carried out, and it is found that the proposed topology outperform other topologies on many parameters.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the harmonic characteristics of electromagnetic force (EMF) in Brushless Alternating Current (BLAC) motor for High Volume Low Speed (HVLS) fan application. Vibration and noise are one of the main crucial things in HVLS fan application. It comes from torque ripples which can be detected by harmonics of Electro Magnetic Force (EMF). Commonly, there are a few methods to eliminate the noise and vibrations issue, but most literatures only focus on small motor and not intended for HVLS fan application. Thus, the objective of this paper is to eliminate the harmonics content in EMF at early stage design. Through EMF harmonics the expected torque produced could be used to select proper slot-pole number in order to eliminate the noise and vibrations issue. In here, the analysis involves three different slot-pole numbers which are 18s/20p, 12s/10p and 9s/8p BLAC model, respectively. All models have similar volume of permanent magnet. The analysis is carried out using FLUX 2D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for EMF computational and transient torque computation. Later, Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis is used to calculate the harmonics of EMF. The analysis stage includes the EMF parameter analysis, harmonics and torque ripples analysis. It was found that 18s/20p has higher output torque with the lowest 5% torque ripple value. As a conclusion, this paper presents low torque ripple in point of view of the EMF characteristics in designing HVLS fan.

Abstract

In the article the circuit design solution of DC-DC regulated resonant converter has been proposed for using with hybrid photovoltaic modules which has cooling equipment and solar concentrators in order to maximize electric power generating by such module. By using computer simulation based on multiple iterations algorithm we significantly increase the accuracy of determining the resonance circuit optimal parameters for build up DC–DC converters to work in a wide range of electric powers. Based on optimal values of the resonance LLC scheme parameters, achived by numerical calculation it can be show high values of electrical energy transformation efficiency for photovoltaic energy station equipped with high efficiency hybrid photovoltaic modules.  Implementation of microprocessor-based control into design of DC–DC back-boost converters create a new possibility to build control algorithms for increase reliability and conversion efficiency, rapid and precision stabilization of maximum power point, implementation network monitoring of photovoltaic modules, converters itself and the whole photovoltaic station parameters.

Abstract

The control system that is widely used in industry is PID (Proportional Integral Derivative). Almost 90% of industries still use PID control systems because of its simplicity, applicability, and reliability. However, the weakness of PID is that it takes a long time to tune. PID control with good performance and low energy consumption can be achieved using GA tuning with the appropriate objective function. The contribution of this paper is to propose the implementation of LQR control in the form of PID using GA tuning with LQR objective function. The proposed algorithm was implemented both in the simulation and hardware which is a mini conveyor with a DC motor. The result shows that the proposed algorithm is better in both IAE and energy consumption compared with other PID tuning, Ziegler–Nichols (ZN), and GA with IAE objective function. Compared with PID ZN, it has IAE and energy reduction by 2.76% and 16.07% respectively. Although its performance is lower than the LQR, it has other advantages that use fewer sensors. The other advantage of the proposed method is, PID is more familiar using. Therefore, it easy to be implemented in the existing system without a lot of changes.
