Abstract

An inverter system applied with the PV source typically has a problem of lower input voltage due to constraint in the PV strings connection. As a countermeasure a DC-DC boost converter is placed in between to achieve a higher voltage at the inverter DC link for connection to the grid and to realize the MPPT operation. This additional stage contributes to losses and complexity in control thus reducing the overall system efficiency. This work discussed on the design and development of a grid-connected quasi-Z-source PV inverter which has different topology and control method compared to the conventional voltage source inverter and able to overcome the above disadvantages. Modelling and performance analysis of the voltage and current controller to achieve a good power transfer from the PV source, as well sycnchronization with the grid are presented in detail. Results from both simulation and experimental verification demonstrate the designed and developed grid-connected qZSI PV inverter works successfully equivalent to the conventional voltage source inverter system.

Abstract

The performance of PV panel is very much dependent on the amount of sun light as well as the temperature of the surrounding environment which normally hard to be predicted. The use of PV emulator in the investigation of solar inverter especially at a lab scale platform helps to mitigate the inconsistency factors due to this uncontrollable variation. This work discussed on the design and development of a PV emulator for the grid-connected quasi-Z-source inverter which has different topology and control method compared to the conventional voltage source inverter. The I-V characteristics of the PV panel is modelled from the commercially available product and through circuit analysis the relation between capacitor voltage control and the PV terminal voltage is established, thus realizing the MPPT operation. Results from both simulation and experimental verification demonstrated that the PV emulator successfully able to produce power for the inverter according to the requirement.

Abstract

This paper presents the simulation between fuel cell model and interleaved DC-DC boost converter (IBC) using a constant voltage maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique. The main advantage of this method is it had the simplest algorithm and can be computed for the high efficiency IBC. The MPPT technique forces the fuel cell to meet the maximum power that the fuel cell can generate. To test the IBC along with the MPPT algorithm, MATLAB/Simulink simulation is carried out. This MPPT method increases the efficiency of power delivered from the fuel cell. The IBC has also chosen for its advantages of reduction of passive component's size, as well as reduced the current ripple that could affect the fuel cell stack. It is envisaged that the MPPT method of constant voltage gives a handful of help in designing a low cost and high efficient fuel cell system along with the interleaved boost converter chosen

Abstract

Nowadays, the elimination of the speed sensor in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) is greatly recommended to increase efficiency and reduce the cost of the drives. This paper proposes a simple estimator for speed and rotor position of PMSM drives using adaptive controller. The novelties of the proposed method are the simple estimator equations and the absence of the voltage probe which depend on direct and quadrature reference current only. The simplified mathematical model of the PMSM is formulated by using V-I model, based on adaptive control. Then, the speed estimation error of the voltage and current model based are analyzed. Thus, an adaptation mechanism model is established to cancel the error of the measured and estimated d-q currents. Since the output of the estimator is the position feedback, the performances of speed responses are presented. The hardware implementation of proposed sensorless drives is realized via dSPACE DS11103 panel. dSPACE Real Time Implementation (RTI) is the linkage between software and hardware set-up. It automatically processes the MATLAB Simulink model into dSPACE DS11103 processor. The experimental-hardware results demonstrate that the speed and position estimator of the proposed method is able to control the PMSM drives for forward and reverse of speed command, acceleration, deceleration and robustness to load disturbance.

Abstract

This paper presents the significant improvement of Direct Torque Control (DTC) of 3-phases induction machine using a Cascaded H-Bidge Multilevel Inverter (CHMI). The largest torque ripple and variable switching frequency are known as the major problem founded in DTC of induction motor. As a result, it can diminish the performance induction motor control. Therefore, the conventional 2-level inverter has been replaced with CHMI the in order to increase the performance of the motor either in dynamic or steady-state condition. By using the multilevel inverter, it can produce a more selection of the voltage vectors. Besides that, it can minimize the torque ripple output as well as increase the efficiency by reducing the switching frequency of the inverter. The simulation model of the proposed method has been developed and tested by using Matlab software. Its improvements were also verified via experimental results.

Abstract

Fuzzy logic controller has been the main focus for many researchers and industries in motor drives. The popularity of Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) is due to its reliability and ability to handle parameters changes during load or disturbance. Fuzzy logic design can be visualized in two categories, mamdani design or Takagi-Sugeno (TS). Mamdani type can facilitate the design process, however it require high computational burden especially with big number of rules and experimental testing. This paper, develop Self-Tuning (ST) mechanism based on Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy type. The mechanism tunes the input scaling factor of speed fuzzy control of Induction Motor (IM) drives Based on the speed error and changes of error. A comparison study is done between the standard TS and the ST-TS based on simulations approaches considering different speed operations. Speed response characteristics such as rise time, overshoot, and settling time are compared for ST-TS and TS. It was shown that ST-TS has optimum results compared to the standard TS. The significance of the proposed method is that, optimum computational burden reduction is achieved.

Abstract

Silicon (Si) based power devices have been employed in most high power applications since decades ago. However, nowadays, most major applications demand higher efficiency and power density due to various reasons. The previously well-known Si devices, unfortunately, have reached their performance limitation to cover all those requirements. Therefore, Silicon Carbide (SiC) with its unique and astonishing characteristic has gained huge attention, particularly in the power electronics field. Comparing both, SiC presents a remarkable ability to enhance overall system performance and the transition from Si to SiC is crucial. With regard to its importance, this paper provides an overview of the characteristics, advantages, and outstanding capabilities in various application for SiC devices. Furthermore, it is also important to disclose the system design challenges, which are discussed at the end of the paper.
