In this paper, a micro grid resonance propagation model is investigated. To actively mitigate the resonance using DG units, an enhanced DG unit control scheme that uses the concept of virtual impedance is proposed. It can be seen that a conventional voltage-controlled DG unit with an LC filter has a short-circuit feature at the chosen harmonic frequencies, whereas a current-controlled DG unit presents an open-circuit characteristic. The application of underground cables and shunt capacitor banks may introduce power distribution system resonances. This paper additionally focuses on developing a voltage-controlled DG unit-based active harmonic damping technique for grid-connected and islanding micro grid systems. An improved virtual impedance control method with a virtual damping resistor and a nonlinear virtual capacitor is proposed. The nonlinear virtual capacitor is used to compensate the harmonic dip on the grid-side inductor of a DG unit LCL filter. The virtual resistance is principally answerable for micro grid resonance damping. The effectiveness of the proposed damping method is examined using each a single DG unit and multiple parallel DG units.

This paper is present a novel approach for solving the pending under-reach problem encountered by distance relay protection scheme in the 3rd zones protection coverage for a midpoint STATCOM compensated transmission lines. The propose transmission line model is develop in Matlab for analyzed feature extraction using Discrete Wavelet multiresolution analysis approach. Extracted feature from standard deviation and entropy energy contents of SLG transient faults current at location beyond the integrated STATCOM used for machine learning algorithm model building using WEKA software. The Naïve Bayes classifier model perform best with robustness prediction and detection of faults with quick convergence even with less training data. The outperformance of the proposed classifier has been 100 % for the relay algorithm modification for under-reach problem elimination in 3rd zones protection coverage.

Power electronics converters are a key component in high voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission. The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is one of the latest topologies to be proposed for this application. An MMC generates multilevel output voltage waveforms which reduces the harmonics contents significantly. This paper presents a VHDL implementation of the capacitor voltage balancing control and level-shifted pulse width modulation (LSPWM) for MMC. The objective is to minimize the processing time with minimum gate counts. The design details are fully described and validated experimentally. An experiment is conducted on a small scale MMC prototype with two units of power cells on each arm. The test results are enclosed and discussed.

Recent technological progresses in the wide-area measurement systems (WAMS) are realizing the centralized controls as a breakthrough for improving the power systems stability. The most challenging deficiency against WAMS technology is related to communication delays. If this latency is neglected, it can deteriorate the damping performance of closed loop control or even degrade the system stability. This paper investigates a conventional Wide Area Damping Controller (WADC) for a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) to damp out the Sub-Synchronous Resonance (SSR) and also investigation of the destructive effect of time delay in remote feedback signal. A new optimization algorithm called teaching-learning-based- optimization (TLBO) algorithm has been implemented to normalize and optimize the parameters of the global SSR damping controller. The IEEE Second Benchmark Model is considered as the system under study and all simulations are carried out in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment.

This paper presents harmonic analysis of matrix converter using different control technique for balance and Unbalance three phase input voltage of reactive load. Since Matrix converter is subject to affected either by external disturbance or by load conditions. Due to this the supply voltage becomes unbalance. This cause improper switching of matrix converter results higher harmonics. This harmonics are harmful to the quality of the output power. The switching sequence of the matrix converter is controlled by vector control method. Different control technique is proposed in this paper to get optimized result with reduced harmonic for unbalanced and balance input voltage using PID, Fractional Order PID (PIλDδ) controller (FOPID), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)FOPID. PID control technique result are compared with other optimization technique for best optimum output. The FOPID controller is used to compensates the current and also improvise the quality of energy by reducing the harmonic content. The simulations and hardware results will be presented and interpreted. The effectivess of the proposed system is proven with the results is shown in this paper which produce a better steady state lesser transient rather than the conventional PID method.

The world community relied heavily on fossils energies but just after the big oil crisis the use of renewable energy has greatly increased and has become the main interest of many countries for its many advantages such as: minimal impact on the environment, renewable generators requiring less maintenance than traditional ones and it has also a great impact on economy. It is easy to get charmed by the advantages of using the renewable resources but we must also be aware of their disadvantages. One of the major disadvantages is that the renewable energy resources are intermittent and thus they have led scientists to develop new semiconductor power converters among which are the multilevel inverter. In this paper a new smart multi-level inverter is proposed so as to increase its levels according to the user’s needs and also to avoid the impact of shades and the intermittence on photovoltaic panels. We also propose a modification on the multicarrier aiming to reduce the harmonics. This modification introduces a sinusoidal wave compared with trapezoidal multi-carrier to generate the pulses. In order to obtain the line voltages and the total harmonic distortions (THD) MATLAB/SIMULINK is used.

This article presents a model of pulsed Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) using RL circuit. There are several mathematical models have been successfully developed based on the initial, ignition and discharge phase of current and voltage gap. According to these models, the circuit schematic of transistor pulse power generator has been designed using electrical model in Matlab Simulink software to identify the profile of voltage and current during machining process. Then, the simulation results are compared with the experimental results.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v5i2.6681

This work investigates the usage of Model Predictive Control (MPC) for a three phase conventional matrix converter with low pass filter at the input and output side. The conventional matrix converter has 3 input and 3 output which gives 27 switching state. From this design, a MPC is incorporate to control the output voltage and the input currents for all the phases. The design of the proposed controller is based on the input current controller and output voltage controller with load observer. The proposed MPC using cost function will select the minimized switching state to be applied to next switching. This gives a sinusoidal output voltages and input currents. A simulation and experimental studies are presented to validate the proposed control scheme.

Sensitive loads are widely used in industrial, which is the main cause of sag-swell and harmonics voltages problems that can affect the power quality. Among the devices that solve such power quality perturbations, the series active power Filter APFS is considered in this paper. Thus, a single phase APFS is developed through an analytic analysis, supported by an experimental validation, where we applied classical proportional integrator PI, fuzzy logic FLC and sliding mode SM controllers to improve the dynamic response of the APFS. In addition, a comparative study between these control strategies has made in order to mitigate voltage sag-swell and especially harmonics, where the SMC has showed more effective and robust results compared to PI and FLC and proved by the Total harmonic distortion THD ratio. Results of the proposed controllers are simulated in MATLAB simulink® and validated through experimental tests applied on our system prototype.

The discontinuous space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) has well-known that can reduce switching losses. By simplifying the thermal management issues, the discontinuous SVPWM can potentially reduce the inverter size and cost. However, using the modulation due to different time interval equations for each sector can introduce glitches at the points when the sector is changed. The more main problem, it can increase unwanted harmonic content and current ripple. Consider the decrease in switching losses associated with discontinuous modulation allows the system to utilize a higher switching frequency, this paper present high frequency switching of optimized discontinuous SVPWM based on FPGA to overcome the problems above. The proposed SVPWM has been successfully implemented by using APEX20KE Altera FPGA to drive on a three phase inverter system with 1.5 kW induction machine as load. The results have proved that the method can reduce harmonic content and current ripple without glitches.DOI : http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v3i1.735
