Abstract

This study examines the typology of gastronomic tourism in Gianyar Regency, Bali, within the framework of the Triangle Concept of Indonesian Gastronomy (food, culture, and history). A qualitative approach was employed through semi-structured interviews, participatory observation, and documentation of gastronomic practices in Ubud and its surroundings. The findings identify four main typologies: observational culinary tourism, emphasizing aesthetic and sensory experiences; participatory culinary tourism, particularly cooking classes that transform domestic space into cultural learning arenas; agro-gastronomy, which integrates farming, local food production, and eco-tourism; and food festivals, functioning as platforms for cultural representation, entrepreneurship, and international collaboration. These typologies demonstrate how gastronomy in Gianyar is not merely a culinary attraction but also a vehicle for cultural preservation, social transformation, and sustainable community-based tourism. By highlighting the synergy of food, culture, and history, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of gastronomic tourism as both a symbolic and economic driver in Bali’s destination development.

Abstract

The construction of Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) has triggered rapid, large-scale development in Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, posing significant risks to the local identity of the adjacent Glagah Beach Tourism Area. This study evaluates the area's genius loci, or spirit of place, to support sustainable, place-based planning. A qualitative approach, including systematic observation and in-depth interviews, was employed. The Genius Loci Model was used to identify the elements that define Glagah's character. Findings reveal that Glagah's genius loci is fragmented, with the lagoon exhibiting a tranquil, positive identity and the coastline reflecting neglect and a negative image. The research also highlights spatial layering, as a contemporary commercial landscape interacts with a historical, sacred space linked to Pakualaman heritage. Glagah's unique physical features, especially its lagoon and breakwater, distinguish it from other regional beaches. The results indicate that a generic, top-down tourism strategy is insufficient. Instead, the complexity of Glagah's identity requires a dual management strategy: one to preserve and enhance the lagoon's positive attributes and sacred heritage, and another to address coastline degradation. This study provides a place-based framework for managing development pressures and protecting a distinctive cultural landscape.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

ATF, or the ASEAN tourist Forum, was created in 1981 to help Southeast Asia become more cohesive in its tourist industry. Through cooperation between state and non-state actors within ASEAN, the ATF expands the list of actors that contribute to the promotion of ASEAN as a common tourism destination. Nevertheless, it is still to be determined how effectively the ATF achieves this goal, namely, whether it functions as a platform for competition rather than cooperation. The present study utilises a qualitative case study approach to examine the activities, responses, and outcomes of the ATF throughout its existence. The primary emphasis is on the dynamic interplay between cooperation and competitiveness among member states of the ATF, particularly within the framework of ATSP 1 and ATSP 2. The findings show that while the ATF has promoted regional tourism collaboration, competition among member countries sometimes limits deeper integration. The results also show that some countries prioritize domestic tourism over integrated regional destinations due to their domestic conditions. This analysis uses tourism to shed light on Southeast Asian regionalization in the ATF. Access to this information also suggests ways to create more effective, harmonious, and comprehensive policies.
