Abstract

This study aimed was to discover the level and the type of speaking anxiety among the student in speaking, and also to discover the correlation between speaking anxiety and their speaking ability at second-year students of English Department UNP. The correlation research was used in this research. The person who takes part inactivity of this research was 20 students of speaking class at English Department UNP in the academic year 2018. Questionnaire and interview were utilized in this examination to measure the correlation between the two aspects. The questionnaire was Foreign Language Anxiety Classroom Scale (FLCAS). Fear of negative evaluation was identified as the type of speaking anxiety, and the level of their speaking anxiety categorized at a medium level. After calculated the two aspects using SPSS 2.0, the result shows there is a negative correlation between students' speaking anxiety and their speaking ability. And it is correlated at -0.498 which means the correlation is in a moderate correlation.

Abstract

Some students feel scared when they have to perform speech in front of public. They feel a kind of tension, worry and discomfort during the speech performance. Therefore, this research was aimed to find the level of speech self – efficacy performed by students who had taken Public Speaking class at English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. This research was a descriptive research. The population was second year students registered in the Public Speaking Class of English Language Educational Program. The sample was taken by using random sampling. It was a class from English Language Educational Program. The chosen sample consisted of 29 students. The data were collected through a questionnaire that consist of 8 items divide 48 questions of speech self – efficacy. The results of this study shows that the students’ level speech self-efficacy was medium. It means that the students need more self – efficacy to increase their self-efficacy and motivation in studying and to improve their ability in delivering speech.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out types of process and the most dominant process types of transitivity system, and to find out types of circumstances and the most dominant types of circumstances in Hortatory Exposition Text written by the third year student of English Education Program at Universitas Negeri Padang. The data of this research were collected through a writing test on hortatory exposition. It found 866 clauses that were obtained from 23 texts of hortatory exposition texts. The result of this research was that six types of processes occurred in the text. There were material process (59%), mental process (12%), relational process (23%), behavioral process (2%), verbal process (2%), and existential process (3%). It was found that types of material processes were the dominant process found in students' writing. Also, the result of this research found eight types of circumstances, there were Extent (6%), Location (36%), Manner (24%), Cause (26%), Accompaniment (4%), role (2%), matter (1%) and Angel (1%). The dominant types of circumstances were Location. It indicates that the characteristics of hortatory exposition text are using the material process and circumstances of Location.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the strategies that were used by low, medium, and high-level students English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang in interpreting an English short speech into Bahasa Indonesia consecutively. The subject of this research was the third-year students of English Department who had taken English-Indonesia interpreting class. The sample was 23% were chosen out of 53 students by random sampling technique. The data were collected using an interpreting test consecutively via zoom meeting. The results show that the dominant strategy used by low-level students was the skipping strategy it was about 49 times used by the students during the test, it means (33.8%) out of the students used this strategy. Then, the dominant strategy was used by medium level students was skipping 29 times used by the students during the test or (20.86%) out of the students. Last, students in high level dominant used explicitation strategy 41 times used by the students during the interpreting test or (28.87%) out of the students. It could be concluded that students find it difficult to comprehend the source language; it proves that students skip the SL 86 times during the interpreting test, which was about 20.67%. Students in the low and medium level tend to use the skipping strategy, but students in the high level tend to repair and make the interpretation clearly by using explicitation strategy.

Abstract

Authentic assessment can help teachers to find out the extent to which students can apply their knowledge and skills in the context of real situations. This is because authentic assessment focuses on activities or tasks performed by students after all the knowledge and skills being taught are adapted to the actual context. The researcher conducted the implementation of authentic assessment on reading comprehension in the tenth grade. The population and sample of this study were tenth-grade students and English teachers at SMA 8 Padang. This research uses descriptive quantitative research. This study aims to understand the form of authentic reading assessment, the level of difficulty, and the problems faced by the teacher in implementing the authentic assessment. The research instruments were documentation, questionnaire, and interviews. The results of the study found that (1) 4 forms of authentic assessment of reading comprehension used by teachers at SMAN 8 Padang, (2) the level of difficulty in implementing authentic assessment of reading comprehension was easy carried out by students, and (3) several problems faced by teachers in implementing of authentic assessment on reading comprehension.

Abstract

The present research aims to figure out (1) types of oral feedback used by teachers’ in EFL classroom interaction (2) teachers’ reasons for using oral feedback in EFL classroom interaction, and (2) students’ perceptions about teachers’ oral feedback in EFL classroom interactions. The study employed qualitative descriptive research with the three teachers of SMP Negeri 10 Batam and also students for grade seven, eight and nine as the participants. Observation and Stimulated Recall Interview (SIR) were used to conduct the data, and the data were analysed by using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). The result of this research showed that the teachers used 6 types of oral feedback, namely correction, recast, clarificationrequest, metalinguistic feedback, elicitation and repetitionfrom the theory of (Lightbown and Spada, 1999). However, the average of teachers’ oral feedback use showed a low percen teachers employed oral feedback because of teachers’ responsibility and obligation to provide it, the effective and efficient feedback mode, the utility of oral feedback, positive effect to students, and consequences of none of oral feedback.Through a stimulated recall interview, the teachers admitted that they are still not optimal in providing input to the students. Mostly, the perceived positively to oral feedback. Some students found felt sensitive to oral feedback. Nevertheless, they still realized to its positive effect on the result of their work or performance

Abstract

This research aimed at identifying the subject-verb agreement errors in students’ speaking performance, finding out mostly the types of errors in applying the subject-verb agreement also finding out the source of errors made by the second-year students of English department of UNP. This research applied a descriptive qualitative research design with 28 students who participated in this study. The data of the research were collected through a test instrument. The test instrument covers a speaking test in a report form. All of the errors that were identified in subject-verb agreement were analyzing by using Surface Strategy Taxonomy introduced by Dulay et,al. the result of data analysis showed that the students contributed into four types of errors in subject-verb agreement’s term, they are (1) omission (38 errors / 25 %), (2) addition (47 errors / 27%). (3) misformation ( 76 / 45%), (4) misordering (10 errors / 6%). Furthermore, the research also found the sources of errors made by the students during his/her speaking report test, the frequent sources of errors are Intralingual transfer there are totally (100 errors / 57%), Interlingual transfer (45 errors / 25%), communication strategy ( 17 errors / 10 %) and the last one is context of learning ( 14 errors / 8%)

Abstract

The development of technology should be followed by all aspects of human life, including education. One of the possibilities of adapting technology development in education is by designing digital learning materials. The aim of this paper is to discuss the ways of using audiobooks as a better replacement material to be used in an EFL listening classroom. Many students face difficulties in listening, like problems in their listening comprehension, having a hard time pronouncing words, and make the connection between what they listen to and what they have already known because they are unable to accurately comprehend spoken materials. Audiobooks give a solution to these complications by presenting them with a native speaker illustration, giving students the proper pronunciation of words. Overall, audiobooks are suitable for enhancing students’ listening comprehension capability and diminishing the fossilized problems they have been carried for so long.

Abstract

In order to be professional, a teacher needs to master teacher competencies, so the teacher will achieve their work clearly and effectively. To be approved as a professional, initially, a teacher should join in-service teacher certification program (PPG dalam jabatan). This program has a goal to improve the teacher’s professionalism, later they will obtain a certificate. Nonetheless, there are still teachers proven lacking of teacher competencies according to the result of 2018 Teacher Competency Test (Uji Kompetensi Guru). Besides, although this program has been conducted for several years in English department of Universitas Negeri Padang, but the issues related to this matter have not been analysed yet. Hence, the supervising teachers’ perceptions toward this program were needed since they have guided the in-service teachers practicing teacher practice at schools. A questionnaire consisted of two types of questions were given to get the supervising teachers’ perception toward in-service teacher certification program. Overall, according to the results, the supervising teachers gave positive feedbacks, albeit there were some negative perceptions found. It is found that the English teachers were capable the most at personal competency. Also, it is evidenced that the English teachers’ pedagogical and professional competency are indeed still low affecting their capability at administering in practicing teacher practice.

Abstract

An authentic assessment is a form of assessment to assess students' ability to use the language they learn in the actual context. An authentic assessment can be in the form of assessing the ability to understand what other people say both listening and reading.  The implementation of authentic assessment is expected to improve the quality of assessment during the process of learning English. The researcher conducted the implementation of authentic assessment on reading comprehension in the tenth grade. This research used descriptive quantitative research. The population and sample of this study were tenth-grade students and English teachers at SMAN 7 Padang who taught in the tenth grade. The research instruments were a questionnaire, documentation, and interview. The result of the study found that (1)there were four forms of authentic assessment on reading comprehension used by the teacher at SMAN 7 Padang, (2)the level of difficulties in implementing the authentic assessment on reading comprehension is easy by the students, (3) the problem faced by the teacher in implementing the authentic assessment are students’ understanding about the authentic assessment and the differences between the curriculum in 2013.
