Abstract

Kurikulum pendidikan di Indonesia mengalami perubahan pada tahun 2013. Perubahan tersebut merupakan usaha untuk meningkatkan mutu pendidikan di Indonesia. Pada pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia, kurikulum yang digunakan adalah berbasis teks. Beberapa tahun kemudian, untuk mewujudkan visi dan misi agar masyarakat dapat beradaptasi dengan kemajuan pengetahuan dan teknologi, pemerintah mengeluarkan kebijakan tentang Gerakan Literasi Sekolah (GLS) dan diperbarui dengan Gerakan Literasi Nasional (GLN). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kegiatan literasi yang dilakukan di sekolah dan melihat respon siswa setelah dilaksanakan kegiatan literasi. Penelitian ini merekomendasikan untuk mempertimbangkan literasi sebagai inovasi kurikulum di sekolah. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif dengan teknik wawancara terstruktur dan teknik pengumpulan angket. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah pedoman wawancara dan lembar kuesioner. Wawancara dilakukan dengan tujuh orang guru Bahasa Indonesia di Sumatera Barat dan Angket diisi oleh 30 orang siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dalam pelaksanaannya, literasi tidak dilaksanakan dengan aturan yang ditetapkan. Tujuan dari literasi tersebut juga tidak tercapai dengan mestinya. Dalam pelaksanaannya, kurikulum dan literasi seolah-olah merupakan dua hal yang berbeda dan pelaksanaan yang tidak sejalan. Padahal, kegiatan pembelajaran yang dilakukan merupakan kegiatan literasi. Khusus pada pembelajaran bahasa, literasi yang dilakukan adalah literasi baca dan tulis.

Abstract

This research was conducted to improve the students’writing skill at grade VIII-7 SMP Negeri 1 Padangsidimpuan.. It was due to the lack of the students’ interest and less of communication or sharing ideas in writing activity, so they were not able to complete their writing tasks by organizing their ideas, use correct grammar, and choose vocabulary during learning and teaching process. This research was intended to improve the students’ writing skill by using cooperative learning (think, pair, share) technique at grade VIII-7 SMP Negeri 1 Padangsidimpuan. It was hoped that by using this technique the students’ writing skill of grade VIII-7 SMP Negeri 1 Padangsidimpuan could be improved. The participants of this research were the students of grade VIII-7 SMP Negeri 1 Padangsidimpuan in 2012 – 2013 acdemic year. After finishing the first and second cycle of the research, there was some improvement in writing test scores.

Abstract

Abstract—Learning a foreign language by using social media at the University level is very important because social media has great potential to support student-centered learning as they are flexible, interactive, and resource–rich in nature. One of its drawbacks is the quality of online instruction that lead to unfavorable perception and perspective of the students. The objectives of this research are to analyze the students’ perceptions and perspectives in using Social Media as a tool in English Language learning. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected from the students of the English Study Program, Faculty of Education, the Islamic University of Riau. Research finding revealed that social media is very practical and useful for getting general information, knowledge and to increase their language competency. Abstract

The purpose of the research is to find out the students’ ability in writing, especially writing recount text by using Facebook as a medium of discussion. In the classroom students set up their Cellphone to write and discuss a recount text. The research question is “Is there any significant effect on students writing recount text by using face book as medium for discussion on Senior High School students?” In the preliminary study it was found that the students’ writing ability was low. Hence, the writer is interested in trying to solve the students’ problem by using Facebook as a medium of discussion. The design of this research was an experimental research. The sample for this research consisted of 25 students. The result of this research found that Facebook as medium for discussion significantly affect the students writing ability. Abstract

Reference is an essential component for comprehending a reading text. In comprehending a text some students had problem such as their limited vocabulary, inability to interpret reference, and  lack  of  background knowledge. The purpose of the research was to find out the students’ reference mastery  in narrative text and students’ difficulties in mastering reference. This  research was a descriptive research. Random sampling technique was applied and twenty two students of XI grade of SMAN 1 Tempuling were taken as the subject of the research. The data were collected through quantitative and qualitative methods. Reading test was distributed to collect quantitative data, while interview was applied to gather qualitative data. The findings of this research reveal that the students’ reference mastery was in good category, but some problems still appeared which were affected by some factors; lack of practice, limited vocabulary mastery, and poor grammar mastery.  Thus, it can be concluded that the students’ reference mastery in narrative text needed to be improved.

Abstract

Evaluation is a process for gathering students’ progress in the learning. Authentic assessment as an evaluation system in 2013 curriculum is needed in assessing students’ process and product of the learning. Yet, teachers need a guidance book in implementing the authentic assessment for assessing students’ writing skill. Those products of authentic assessment have been developed by the experts from Universitas Negeri Padang. This research aimed to evaluate these authentic assessment products for writing skill at junior high schools at the seventh and eighth grade based on the requirement of 2013 curriculum, the content or material, and the authenticity of authentic assessment. To achieve the aims, the research was designed to the evaluation research. The participants of this research were twelve English teachers at junior high schools in West Sumatera and one expert in the language assessment.

Abstract

Teachers’ beliefs are a personal construct that can provide understandings, perceptions, and evaluation of teachers' practices. The purpose of this research was to find out the students' perceptions toward teachers' beliefs and their effect on students' achievement in English as a general subject at Universitas Negeri Padang. This research was ex-post facto research. The students of English as a general subject in 2018/2019 academic year were the population of this study. The sample was chosen by using a random sampling technique in which there were 150 students chosen as the subjects of this research. The data were taken by using a Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed by using SPSS Statistics 18 Software. The result showed that there were no significant effects of teachers' beliefs on students' achievement. H0 was accepted because the t-value was lower than the t-table. The value of the t-value was 1.008, while the t-table was 6.313.

Abstract

Online lectures are the main means of learning during the Covid-19 Pandemic. It is inevitable that at this time, the campus is carrying out lectures online from home due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but lecturers and students continue to conduct online-based lectures through various applications, one of which is the Zoom Meeting application. The purpose of this article is to determine the effectiveness of using the Zoom Meeting application in micro teaching lectures during the Covid-19 pandemic. The method used was in the form of filling out a questionnaire via Google Form for 34 students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Study Program STKIP PGRI West Sumatra who were taking micro teaching courses in the even semester of 2019/2020, total 34 students. From the descriptive survey results, it was found that the variable student opinion on the ease of the Zoom Meeting application in micro teaching lectures, obtained an average of 3.857. The student acceptance variable on the ease of the Zoom Meeting application as an online learning medium in micro teaching lectures, obtained an average of 3.649. The student expectation variable regarding the use of the Zoom Meeting application in micro teaching lectures, the results obtained an average of 3.842. That is, the use of the Zoom Meeting application is less effective in micro teaching lectures, but it is already effective in online learning media and can be used as a learning application during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding the types of themes and elements of theme used in multiple themes on the covid-19 vaccine news item. This research used the descriptive method. The data were news items that discuss the covid-19 vaccine online news on nbcnews.com in January to May 2021. The researcher found  four types of themes in news items. They are simple unmarked theme, simple marked theme, multiple unmarked theme, and multiple marked theme. Meanwhile, the element of theme used in multiple theme are conjunction, conjunctive, continuative, wh-relative, finite, modal adjunct, and wh-question. The researcher found that the most dominant type of theme used was the unmarked theme (simple unmarked theme and multiple unmarked theme). This shows that the news is delivered with clear information that focuses on the events in the news.

Abstract

Language style is very important to learn to understand a literary work, because everyone has a different language style. The purpose of this study is to determine the type of language style used by Lewis and the social factors that influence the style of language in the novel. The researcher applies a sociolinguistic approach using Martin Joos' theory which divides five language styles, namely frozen style, formal style, consultative style, relaxed style, and familiar style. In this thesis, qualitative method is used to analyze the problem. The researcher found 46 data of the language style, they are frozen style 8 (17.4%), formal style data 8 (17.4%), consultative style data 9 (19.5%), casual style 17 data (37%), and intimate style 4 (8.7%). The findings also show that there were 52 data from social factors that influence the use of language styles, they are participants 20 (39%), setting 2 (4%), topic 22 (41%), and function 8 (16%). In this study, the most dominant style of language is the casual style, while the social factor that most influences the use of language style in this novel is the topic.
