Abstract

This study was descriptive research which aimed to find out distribution of questions for examination within cognitive domains in SMP Negeri 15 Padang. The data were derived from examination questions. The questions from examination were analyzed and classified based on cognitive levels of Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy by Anderson and Krathwohl (2001). The examination questions were collected from grade VII, VIII, and IX. The results of the study show that there are significant imbalances in the distribution of questions within cognitive levels for examination. From all grades, LOTS-based questions dominantly found in examination question. Specifically, Understanding (C2) and Applying (C3) level of questions dominated the distribution of questions in SMP Negeri 15 Padang.  Meanwhile, only Analyzing (C4) level of question found in HOTS category. However, the percentages of HOTS-based questions are higher than LOTS-based questions found in examination.

Abstract

This  study was aimed to find empirical evidence of student errors in pronouncing segmental features of English language students in the 5th semester Universitas Negeri Padang. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The subjects of this study were students in education class, international class and literature class who were taking speaking classes at Universitas Negeri Padang. while the object of this research is errors pronunciation in  segmental features of English Department. Then, to collect data, the researcher conducted interviews as an instrument to find errors. Interviews were conducted in the form of voice recordings by phone calling. Based on data analysis, the researcher found that some sounds that are often mispronounced are [ð], [θ], [k], [ʒ], [tʃ ], [ɔ:], and [ʊ]. All these errors make up almost 70% of the data. The single largest error occurred in [ð] and the occurrence was 76 times which the errors was 18% and the other largest error occurred in [θ] where the frequency about 59 times which the total errors counted 14% .then the sounds [k], [ʒ], [tʃ], [ɔ:], and [ʊ] have a relatively smaller error rate, namely 9%, 8%,8%, 7%. , and 6% respectively. In conclusion, from 30 students, it was found that there were a total of 423 errors made by students. Consonant errors are more obvious than vowel errors. The consonant error frequency is 293 which is more than 69% of the total errors, and the vowel error is 132 which is almost 31% of the errors.

Abstract

This study is aimed at providing explanation on the the teacher’s strategies to overcome the students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text at the tenth grade of SMA N 10 Padang. The teacher’s strategies were viewed from the components in writing the generic structures and language features of descriptive text. This study is qualitative research. The sample of the research was one of 4 English teachers who taught descriptive text at the tenth grade. The data obtained from interview and observation checklist. The findings of the study reveals that there were some strategies applied by the teacher. The strategies applied by the teacher in generic structure difficulties were observing, guiding question, while in language feature difficulties, there were sentence construction, giving opportunity to ask, metalinguistic feedback and giving the criteria. Among those strategies, guiding question was the most frequently used strategies in overcoming the difficulties in descriptive text.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the distribution of cognitive levels on questions used for learning in SMA Negeri 5 Kota Bukittinggi. Additionally, the findings of LOTS and HOTS questions proposed for learning in SMA Negeri 5 Kota Bukittinggi are analyzed and then described. The analysis in this study is based on Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. The informants of the research are 3 English Teachers who teach in grade X, XI and XII. To answer all questions, a descriptive research is conducted to describe the result of the research. The results of the study show that there are significant imbalances in the distribution of different level of questions during the learning process. In most cases, the teachers across all grades are more inclined to propose LOTS-based questions than its HOTS counterpart. Specifically, this research found that remembering (C1) and understanding (C2) level of questions dominated the distribution of questions in SMA Negeri 5 Bukittinggi with the combined overall percentage of more than 50%. Despite this, there was a pattern of increase in the percentage of HOTS questions as the grade increases. Grade XII shows higher percentage of HOTS-based questions compared to the other grades. However, the percentage of HOTS-based questions given in learning is found to be higher than LOTS questions.

Abstract

This study aims to know how students' interest in learning English online in SMA Negeri 3 Tualang During Covid-19 Pandemic. The sample of this study was the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Tualang. The sample was carried out using a proportionate sampling method. The number of samples in this study was 160 students. Data were collected utilizing a questionnaire and strengthened by interviews. This research is descriptive research with a quantitative approach. Some of the applications used by students and teachers during online learning are WhatsApp, Telegram, Google Classroom, and Zoom. Interest in learning is one of the essential things in the smooth learning process, both face to face and online. External and internal factors also influence students' interest in learning English online. This study indicates that students' interest in learning English online is in the medium category, with the average value of each indicator being; feeling pleasure was 2,966, Students engagement was 2,978, and students involvement was 3,056. The overall average is 3,000 or is in the medium category.

Abstract

The spread of the COVID-19 virus in Indonesia has affected human life in various sectors, including education. The learning system from conventional classrooms to online learning brings various views or opinions from both teachers and students. This study aims to determine student perceptions of online learning that has been carried out during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research was conducted at the English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang on 33 third-year students in the July-December 2020 semester. 25 statements were used in this study to find out how students perceive online learning. The result of this study is that students have a neutral perception of online learning that is being carried out during the pandemic with an average score of 2.87. However, the students considered that some platforms were considered inappropriate because they needed a lot of data packages to access, and there were platforms that could not be used to collect the assigments that had been done.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze students’ perceptions and difficulties in doing online English exercises by using Quizizz. The researcher used an online questionnaire and interview as the instrumentation. The researcher used cluster random sampling to choose the sample. The sample of this research consisted of 35 students of K3’2018 English Education at Universitas Negeri Padang. In this study, the researcher used descriptive quantitative as a research design. There were two aspects of perception used in this research: perceived ease of use and perceived enjoyment. Findings from data analysis show that students perceived positively both aspects. It shows that students agree that Quizizz is easy to use, easy to access, interesting and fun, and can be used in daily online English exercises. The difficulties faced by the students were duration, slow internet connection, and uncomfortable features.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the listening, speaking, reading, and writing obstacles faced by PGSD international class students 2019 in using English as a medium of instruction. Data was collected from 21 international class PGSD students in the 2019 entry year at Universitas Negeri Padang. In collecting data, the students were asked to fill out a questionnaire consisting of 41 questionnaire for 55 minutes. The results showed that these students had many obstacles in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In other words, students are classified as having obstacles in using English as medium of instruction. In this case, the lecturers were asked to pay more attention to the student learning process such as often listening to western music, trying to talk to each other between students, reading texts, and writing things down about English texts.

Abstract

This research purpose to examine students’ perceptions toward the use of short videos based social media in learning English. The writer used an online questionnaire and interview for this research, which included 33 statements for questionnaire and 8 key questions for interview. The participants were 34 students from third year at English Department Universitas Negeri Padang. The findings from the data analysis, most of the students give a positive perception on the use of social media in learning English. The students used social media for learning and improving their English skill. They chose YouTube as the most frequently used application to improve their English skill. Then, they stated that using social media make them happy, challenged and helped when learning English. The students also mentioned that learning English can add new knowledge, develop their skills in speaking and writing and social media can improve their listening skill. Besides, there were several perspective faced by students, they get confused when learning English and do not know who to ask and they feel bothered with advertisement suddenly appeared when their learning English in social media.

Abstract

This research was intended to find out the translation acceptability made by English department students about pun in humour text. this research is descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research were students of translation class, selected by using cluster random sampling techniques. The technique of data collection was using translation test. The finding of the student acceptability was scored by using Nababan’s TQA model. the result of this research show that students’ translation in translating pun as humour were mostly in less acceptable.
