Abstract

This research was aimed to analyze students' ability in reading comprehension using Barrett's taxonomy at English Department Universitas Negeri Padang. The population of this research was students of the 2018 Academic Year English Education study program who had taken reading classes ranging from Basic Reading, Intermediate Reading, Advanced Reading, Critical Reading, and Extensive Reading. The sample of this research study was 28 students using a simple random sampling technique. This research used a reading comprehension test to obtain data. This research used Barrett's taxonomy as an indicator consisting of five levels, namely: Literal, Reorganization, Inferential, Evaluation, and Appreciation. This research is a descriptive study with a quantitative approach that uses tests as instruments. The results of this study indicated that the students' ability in reading comprehension is in the poor category with a mean score of 53.86. This research showed that students have low ability in understanding the evaluation with a total average score of 31.79%. In addition, the highest percentage is in appreciation comprehension with an average score of 56.55%. Therefore, lecturers are expected to be able to improve students' ability in reading comprehension, especially in understanding the evaluation and reorganization by providing a lot of practice both inside and outside the classroom.

Abstract

There are some ways to enhance students’ vocabularies. One of them is using online applications, Magoosh Application. This study is to determine the efficiency of utilizing the Magoosh application in enhancing the vocabularies of students in the English Department of UNP. An experimental research design will use in this study to investigate the extent to which the use of these applications. Also, the instrument of data collection technique are tests and a questionnaire. The respondents in this study were 20 students of English  Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. They were given pre-test before using Magoosh and post-test after using Magoosh. Then, followed by giving 15 questions for questionnaire. The results showed that there is an improvement from the pre-test to the post-test after the students use Magoosh application. The improvement is 24.53%. The pre-test and post-test proved to be higher in the final test. It can be concluded that using the Magoosh application can improve students' vocabulary. Moreover, from the satisfaction of the students it shows that 63% of the respondents agree that Magoosh helps them to enhance their vocabularies. Thus, the implementation of Magoosh application is usually recommended to be an exciting technique in coaching gaining knowledge of method to inspire the students in vocabulary.

Abstract

The Corona Virus Disease (Covid-19) pandemic has spread all over the world including Indonesia. There are many aspects affected by this virus, one of which is educational activities. Education in Indonesia has a big change caused by this virus. Schools or educational facilities have to close to prevent the spread of this virus. So that, the students cannot come to classroom and they have to run online learning.  This research aimed to find out the challenges faced by eleventh grade students of SMA Pertiwi 1 Padang in writing personal letter during online learning. This research is a descriptive research. The samples of this research were 157 students of eleventh grade students of SMA Pertiwi 1 Padang, where the samples were selected by using proportional random sampling technique. The technique of data collection was using questionnaire. The students were given 24 questions related to process of writing, aspects of writing, gen                                                                                                            eric structure of personal letter and language features of personal letter to find out their challenges in writing personal letter during online learning. The result showed that mostly the students have challenges in writing personal letter during online learning. It can be proved from the result of this study where the mean score of process indicator was 2.72, the mean score of aspect of writing indicator was 2.78, the mean score of generic structure of personal letter was 2.65 and the mean score of language features of personal letter was 2.75. The highest mean score was 2.78 in the aspect of writing, which was in the difficult category. So, the students’ challenges in writing personal letter during online learning were in difficult category.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the level of foreign language anxiety in listening and reading skills of EFL students in English language education study program and English language literature study program at  FBS UNP. This research employed the following questionnaires as the research instruments: Foreign Language Listening Anxiety Questionnaire (FLLAQ) adapted from Marzec-Stawiarska (2013) and Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Questionnaire adopted from Azhari Muhlis (2017). The results of this study indicated that the majority of the English language education program students and English language literature program students of UNP have a high level of foreign language anxiety in listening and reading skills. To accomplish a better learning outcome, it is strongly advised that students become aware of their anxiety and deal with it through a lot of practice, peer-to-peer support, and optimistic thought. Furthermore, teachers can be more innovative in making language skills classes more enjoyable and relaxing for students to accomplish better learning outcomes.

Abstract

Anxiety in recent years has become a hot issue discussed by many people one of them is foreign language anxiety which includes various anxiety in foreign language aspects. In terms of writing, this anxiety is known as writing anxiety. This research aims to describe the level, type, and causes of writing anxiety of English language and literature department students at UNP in writing Thesis Proposals. This research used a descriptive study involving 70 fourth-year students that have already taken Thesis Proposal Writing class and are currently writing their thesis proposals. Through random sampling technique, 14 students (20% of the population) were selected. Data were collected through the SLWAI (Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory) questionnaire adapted from Cheng (2004) and interview sessions. The results showed that students experienced anxiety at the medium level with cognitive anxiety being the most dominant type. Other results are four main factors that cause writing anxiety in writing a thesis proposal. They are low self-confidence, language difficulties, insufficient writing technique, and pressure for perfect work.

Abstract

Translation is one of the useful and beneficial competencies for English students; it is not only to achieve the learning outcomes during their study but also to be a valuable skill that they can use to get a job after graduation. This study aims to introduce project-based learning and its implementation and to explore students' perceptions in deploying project-based learning as the learning method in translation courses. This study was a qualitative study with a case study method design. The data of students' perceptions were attained through an online questionnaire containing close-ended and open-ended questions. The participants were 38 students who took the Basic Translation and Interpretation course. The data were analyzed narratively to describe the implementation of project-based learning and students' perception of its implementation in translation courses. The study showed that students' perception toward PjBL projects was positive and actively engaging students in completing activities of the projects.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to obtain the data related to the students’ motivation during online English Learning. All of the students at SMA Negeri 4 Payakumbuh were the population of this research, while the seventy-five students of SMA Negeri 4 Payakumbuh were the sample of this research. The instrument of this research was a questionnaire. From overall recapitulations, it can be seen that the value of average intrinsic motivation score is 3.04 and the value of average extrinsic motivation is 3.06. Based on the foregoing data, it can even be revealed that students’ motivation during online English learning is at a moderate level with the value average 3.04 and 3.06. while the range the degree of agreement or disagreement of moderate level is 2.34-3.67. the result showed that the mean of extrinsic motivation score was higher (3.06) than the mean value of an average intrinsic motivation (3.04).

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the effect of using digital sequence pictures on students’ ability in writing an explanation text. This research design was quasi-experimental research and had two classes which were the control class and the experiment class. The population of this research was the second-year students at SMA N 1 Lengayang and the sample was decided by using cluster random sampling which was getting two classes. XI.IPA 1 was the experiment class and XI.IPA 2 was the control class. The writing test was administrated as the instrument of this research which was writing an explanation text. After collecting the data, the data were analyzed by the paired sample t-test. The result of paired sample t-test in the research stated that the value of sign 2-tailed is 0.000 which means that the value of the sign. 2-tailed lower than 0.05 so that the alternative hypothesis or the first hypothesis was accepted. In conclusion, the results of the data showed that there was a statistically significant improvement in the explanation text which is written by the students after they were taught through the digital sequence pictures. The findings suggest that the digital sequence pictures enable students to improve their ability in writing an explanation text.

Abstract

This study uses quasi-experimental methods. The aim of this research is to investigate the effect of Anecdote Stories To Enrich EFL College Students’ Vocabularies and To Reduce Their Reading Anxiety At English Department. The population of this research were EFL Students’ At English Department UNP. The research sample was 45 students which were divided into two classes which are 25 students from class K’2 and 20 students from NK’1. This study's instrumentation consisted of a pre-test and post-test vocabulary test with 100 short answer questions, as well as a reading anxiety test. The results of those tests were obtained after analyzing the data with SPSS 26 for Windows' Paired sample T-test. It shows the mean of pre-test  and post-test score in K’2 classes were 51,20 and 56,00. Meanwhile the mean of pre-test and post-test score in the NK'1 classes were 47,90 and 52,90. Moreover,  pupils’ result for students anxiety after conducted reading anxiety test in form of pre-test and post-test indicated that are 4% rising score in agree point  while pre-test was 41% and post-test was 45% in K2 classes. In NK2 classes, the differences can be seen in strongly agree point, with 4% rising score from 5% strongly agree to 9% strongly agree. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that students who learn through anecdotes as teaching medium do better than students who learn through conventional media. Moreover, reading anxiety of the students decrease because a lot of them have self-confident to answer the post-test in reading anxiety test after conducted the anecdote. The level's significance is 0.05, which is higher than the significance test, which is 0.000 with a degree of 5 percent. Moreover, it is also found that the anecdotes can reduce EFL students’ reading anxiety at Universitas Negeri Padang especially in English major classes.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the pedagogical competences of the English Teachers based on identifying the characteristics of the student. This is one of the sub-competence that must be mastered as one indicator of pedagogical competence mastery. Where one of the competence is identifying students’ characteristics. it is explained as identifying the learner characteristics related with the competence of instructors to know the condition of the students.This research was conducted by using Descriptive Evaluation method. Whereas evaluative research is the systematic collection and analysis of data about the quality, effectiveness, merit, or value of programs, products, or practices. The result of the research showed All four teachers could understand or identify their students’ cognitive ability. They understand their students, not only the good students, but also the poor students. Besides identifying the students’ cognitive ability, it is also very important for the teacher to know about the learners’ personality in order that he/she can apply appropriate way in teaching the students with the different personality.
