Abstract

Speaking is one of the important skills in learning English. Teacher - made videos are the right method for learning in this digital age, with teachers being able to make videos according to the abilities of their students. The purpose of this study was to investigate what the sixth-grade SMP Muhammadiyah students in Padang thought about using videos made by teachers to teach speaking. SMP Muhammadiyah 6 Padang students contributed to the study's population. The population consisted of 128 students, class VIII 1 was selected to be the sample in this study through the cluster random sampling method. Two sessions were held for conducting this research, and two videos were made accessible. Researchers used a questionnaire with two indicators—perceived effectiveness and perceived interest—to collect data. Students at SMP Muhammadiyah 6 Padang feel that using teacher-produced videos helps them recognize the lessons and increases their interest in learning to speak English, which means the result in this study is very positive perspective.

Abstract

This research aims to analyse the reading comprehension questions given by English Teachers at SMAN Kota Padang based on Barrett’s Taxonomy. This taxonomy has five levels, namely: Literal Comprehension, reorganization, Inferential Comprehension, Evaluation, and Appreciation. This study is being done using a descriptive qualitative research design. To gather the necessary data and information, the observation checklist and interview questions are used as instrumentation. The stages of Barrett's taxonomy were used to categorize the questions that were analysed. The results of this studyindicate that from all the reading questions gathered and observed at six schools and three grades, Inferential Comprehension level has the most questions with 40,07% of the total reading comprehension found in grade X, XI, and XII. It is followed by reorganization level at 35,91%, literal comprehension level at 23,01%, evaluation level at 0,39%, and appreciation level at 0,19%. While the conclusive English assessment at SMAN Kota Padang encompasses all facets of Barrett's taxonomy, its implementation is not necessarily reflected in the formulation of reading inquiries. This discrepancy arises from the dissimilarity between the question distribution across taxonomy stages and the advised proportional distribution. Correspondingly, insights gathered from discussions with the teachers indicated that Barrett's taxonomy had not been integrated into the question development process for the final English test. This affirmation further reinforces the notion that the reading comprehension questions given by English teachers have remained detached from the application of Barrett's taxonomy.

Abstract

To complete academic papers, students are expected to write it based on ideas obtained in reading various sources. While doing so, paraphrasing can be done and it is considered as a higher academic skill than quoting. However, in practice, most of students still find it difficult to paraphrase and their ability in paraphrasing is still low. Several studies investigated the problems experienced by students when paraphrasing and it showed that vocabulary and text comprehension are the most frequent problems in this regard. This correlational study aims to identify the relationship and to measure the contribution of students’ reading comprehension and vocabulary mastery to their paraphrasing ability. The population of this study is eight classes of second-year English Language Education students enrolled in the Academic Writing course in English Language Education study program at Universitas Negeri Padang. By using cluster random sampling, two classes were chosen as the sample of this study. The instruments used were in the form of tests which are reading comprehension test, vocabulary level test, and paraphrasing test. This study used quantitative research methods with multivariate and bivariate correlation analysis technique. The findings show that students’ reading comprehension and vocabulary mastery, both separately and simultaneously, are correlated positively with students’ paraphrasing ability. The results also indicate that reading comprehension contributed 10.1% to paraphrasing ability and vocabulary mastery contributed 22.5%.

Abstract

Narrative writing serves both educational and creative goals, such as in character-driven stories. This article is a conceptual article to come up with Rubin & Greene (1992) coded-stylistic features in the way to investigate the relation of writing styles across the genders. Writing style develops with time, especially in character-based fiction, encouraging the growth of unique traits important to fostering cultural sensitivity and civic engagement. Understanding gender norms in society helps to shape students' educational opportunities. Academic achievement, classroom dynamics, pedagogical decisions, and learning outcomes are all influenced by gender stereotypes. The societal character of language is shown by Argamon et al. (2003), who emphasize the effect of gender on lexical choice and speech patterns. Character-focused schooling, in particular, can benefit from this interplay between gender and writing style by encouraging the development of individual traits that have broader cultural significance.
