Abstract

This study aimed to make an analysis of students motivation based on gender difference system at the first grade of stdents MTsN 12 Tanah Datar. This study used a quantitative method to collect data and was a descriptive study with 40 statements on a Likert scale with four scales: 1 (tidak setuju), 2 (kurang setuju), 3 (setuju), and 4 (sangat setuju). The statements were divided into two categories: achievement motivation and competence motivation. A total of 35 female students and 24 male students from Grade seven MTsN 12 Tanah Datar composed the study's sample. Item validity, namely the product moment, is used in the validity test. Cronbach's alpha was used to test the instrument's reliability.The descriptive method of data analysis was presented as a percentage. The findings showed that students had a high motivation for learning English. In particular, the positivity of the statements for the sake of achievement motivation (10 statements) was above the mean total for female (3,89%) and for male (3,71%), the positivity of the statements for the sake of competence of motivation (10 statements) was above the mean total for female  (3.89%) and for male (3.72%). As the result student’s motivation based on gender difference system was seen high motivation for learning English.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the impact of learning loss on the psychological condition of students in the speaking class of the Department of English Education, Faculty of Language and Arts, Universitas Negeri Padang during the Corona Pandemic. The design of this research is descriptive research. The population for this study was all first-year students of the 2021 academic year of the Department of English Education, Faculty of Languages and Arts, Universitas Negeri Padang and the sample was 22 students from the international class. This study used an online questionnaire and the questionnaire was made of close-ended questions. The most used platforms by students and lecturers are LMS/E-Learning and Zoom Meeting. Students do not experience learning loss in terms of student psychology because students can master learning and reflect on it during online learning, and students can adapt to learning changes that occur due to the pandemic, students master the knowledge and can reflect on the learning process, and students can associate new information with relevant concepts in their cognitive structure. Learning loss has no impact on students' psychological conditions. Learning loss does not have an impact on students because students have ways to overcome the psychological stress that arises during online learning and students who have a high level of resilience in dealing with their problems have a smaller risk of experiencing depression. Students with a high level of resilience will recover faster from pressure and cope with their problems more actively.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze of teacher beliefs and practices in vocabulary teaching at Junior High Schools Gunuang Omeh. This research used Graves theory with which teachers’ beliefs and practices in teaching vocabulary are seen, including, providing rich and varied language experiences, teaching individual words explicitly, teaching word-learning strategies, and fostering word consciousness. This research employed qualitative approach. The participants of this study were four English teachers. The instruments of this research were interviews and observations. The result of this research shows that teachers generally hold similar beliefs in four of indicators, except in one aspect. One teacher believes that teachers should teach definition of new words directly to students while others prefer to teach them implicitly. The research also found that in certain aspect, teachers’ beliefs and practices are not aligned. Only two teachers taught vocabulary used various kinds of game. The researcher suggest that teacher should improve the quality of theirs by using games to teach vocabulary. This research can be addition reference for the same field.

Abstract

Digital children's literature is a listening and reading medium that can be accessed not only by children but also adults. The aims of this study to determine whether using digital children's literature Storynory.com has a good impact on reducing students' listening anxiety. A collection of digital children's literature stories from Storynory.com is used in this research. A quantitative technique and a quasi-experimental research design are used in this research. This research has a population of EFL students, especially students enrolled in the (UNP) for the 2022/2023 academic year. Data is collected by using pre-test which is has 20 question, daily treatment which is contain 15 stories (1 day one stories), and post-test which is has 20 questions. Data was analyzed by SPSS 20. Based on the study's findings, digital children's literature Storynory.com help students feel less anxious about listening. This proves that the utilization of children's digital literature is a successful medium that has a positive effect and can be a solution in reducing listening anxiety of EFL college students in the English Department, UNP.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the lecturer’s perception on how self-study in English Proficiency class at English Department should be ideally Implemented. This research uses descriptive research with a quantitative approach. This survey study involved ten lecturers teaching English Proficiency class at English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang are chosen using convenience sampling method. Questionnaire consisting 30 items followed by four scales was distributed to the lecturers to collected the data. The results of this study show; The implementation of self-study in English Proficiency classes is considered ideal because it is supported by the required learning media and good assessment. In addition, in relation to lecturers' perceptions of the use of technology in conducting self-study, almost all lecturers strongly agreed that technology can help the self-study because with technology students are easier to access materials. In conclusion, the lecturers have very positive perception on how self-study in English Proficiency class at English Department should be ideally Implemented.

Abstract

Technology has already been part of education, especially in the teaching and learning process. Therefore, to support success in learning, teachers are required to master technology and utilize technology in designing lesson plan, delivering material, giving assignments, and assessing learning process. One of the uses of technology to realize those requirements is the use of electronic student worksheet (E-LKPD). One of the platforms that support E-LKPD is Liveworksheets.com. The purpose of this study is to find out the students’ perception toward the use of E-LKPD Liveworksheets.com viewed from Technology Acceptance Model (TAM): perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and attitude toward use. This research used descriptive with quantitative method. Questionnaire was used to collect the data. The results of this study show that students perceive usefulness, perceive ease of use, and have very positive perception toward the use of E-LKPD Liveworksheets.com in learning English, especially grammar. They found that E-LKPD Liveworksheets.com is effective and efficient, and it helps students improve their performance in learning grammar. E-LKPD Liveworksheets.com is easy to use and has flexibility in helping the students work on it. Furthermore, students felt happy and not bored while using E-LKPD Liveworksheets.com. Hence, the students have a very positive perception toward the use of E-LKPD Liveworksheets.com in grammar.

Abstract

This study aimed to reveal students’ perception on wall magazine project toward their writing performance and their creativity skill. The population of this study was English literature students of English Department in UNP. It consists of five classes who are in the academic year 2022/2023. The sample of this study was all classes of literature students. The sample was taken using simple random sampling technique. Total number of the sample in this research was 31 students. The researcher used descriptive research design. The data were collected through a questionnaire. According to the research, in writing performance, the result of this research shows that students had a positive perception on content (3.18), organization (3.18), and very positive perception on mechanics (3.30), and vocabulary (3.28). Meanwhile, in creativity skill, students' perceptions of their creativity skill during paragraph writing class were positive in generating ideas (3.18) and listening to the inner voice (2.99), and very positive in digging deeper into ideas (3.30) and openness and courage in exploring idea (3.27). Students also enjoy to learn paragraph writing class by using the wall magazine project..

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the students’ perception toward reward and punishment in learning English, kinds of reward and punishment given by the teacher in learning English, and how reward and punishment increase students’ motivation in learning English. This research uses descriptive method. A total of 68 of the eleventh grade students in SMAN 12 Padang are chosen using cluster random sampling method. Observation, questionnaire, and interview are used to collect the data. The results of this study show; (1) Teacher gives several kinds of reward in learning English, namely material or symbolic reward, teacher-based reward, preferred activity reward, and good school report reward. (2) Teacher gives several kinds of punishment in learning English, namely symbolic punishment, teacher-based punishment, curtailment activity punishment, home-linked punishment, memorizing vocabularies, and changing students’ seating arrangement. (3) The students have very positive perception toward reward in learning English. (4) The students have positive perception toward punishment in learning English. (5) Reward can encourage students to study harder and punishment give deterrent effect on students. In conclusion, the students have very positive perception toward reward and punishment in learning English. Moreover, reward and punishment affected students’ motivation in learning English.

Abstract

This research aims at measuring students’ Translation Quality of Expressive Language in Poetry from English into Indonesian Made by English Department Students of Universitas Negeri Padang. The qualitative research was used in this research.  The population of this research was the sixth semester English Education students of Universitas Negeri Padang. There were 20 students selected as the sample through the purposive sampling method. Data were collected through a translation test. There were two raters involved in analyzing the quality of the translation result. Findings revealed that the translation quality produced by students are included as accurate with score 2.76, acceptable with score 2.66 and readable with score 2.73.

Abstract

This study aims to learn and understand the difficulties faced by Universitas Negeri Padang's sixth-semester students who are translating texts from English to Indonesian. The qualitative descriptive research design is used in this study. Guidelines for the test and interview were used to get the data. The participants in this study were chosen by the researcher using cluster random sampling. Participants in this study included 20 sixth-semester English Education students at Universitas Negeri Padang who had taken a translation course and were enrolled for the 2019–2020 academic year. This research result shows that the most common difficulties that faced by students is grammatical meaning with 44,5%. In linguistic factor, 80% or 8 of 10 students felt difficult in translating text. The struggles of the students were caused by a variety of circumstances. The significance of the source text was difficult for the students to comprehend. As a result, it is difficult for them to translate it into the intended text. The finding is that linguistic issues contributed more to the students' difficulties than non-linguistic ones.
