Abstract

These researchers are interested in conducting research aims to reveal the perceptions of English teachers at SMAN 7 Padang regarding changes in assessment that have occurred in the Merdeka curriculum. This research uses mixed methods to collect, analyze, and integrate quantitative and qualitative data in one study. From the analysis data, it is concluded that English teachers have a positive perception of assessment changes in the Merdeka curriculum. The results of the research show that assessments in the Merdeka curriculum, namely diagnostic assessment, formative assessment, and summative assessment are effective assessments to help teachers recognize, monitor, and measure students' abilities and understanding of the material so that teachers can identify and evaluate difficulties that arise faced by each student. This is because the implementation of the three assessments in the Merdeka curriculum is by their respective functions, such as the diagnostic assessment given by the teacher at the beginning of each semester, the formative assessment given by the teacher on each learning topic, and the summative assessment given by the teacher. given by the teacher at the end of each semester. Even though there are many benefits, teachers still experience several obstacles such as computers / PCs that still need to be provided and a stable internet network to access materials and lesson questions, this must be overcome with government assistance.

Classroom interaction involves communication between the teacher and students, as well as among the students themselves, within the classroom setting. These interactions can significantly influence students' attitudes, either positively or negatively, particularly in International Classes within the Economy Department. The objective of this research is to explore the dynamics of interaction between lecturers and students (L-S), students and lecturers (S-L), and among students (S-S), and to assess students' attitudes towards these interactions in the International Classes of the Economy Department at Universitas Negeri Padang. This descriptive qualitative study was carried out in the International Class of the Economy Department. The research tools used were observation, a questionnaire, and interviews. Abstract

Using sentence types in a research article, including in the abstract section, should be considered by students since it functions to show the quality of  research writing. An abstract is a summary of a research article that highlights the points and purpose, and it helps readers determine whether the article is relevant to their research interests. Thus, as a response to the function of sentence types, this research aimed to examine the sentence types in the abstract section using a qualitative approach and content analysis. This research employed Brandon’s theory (2011) of sentence types to see what sentence types were written by English education students of UNP in their research article abstracts. Then, 20 research article abstracts were used as the data of this research retrieved from JELT UNP, and the data were analyzed using a checklist table as an instrument. According to the result, it was found that not all types of sentences were used in every abstract. Simple sentences were used more frequently (67.5%) than complex sentences (28.1%) in abstracts. Compound sentences (3.1%) and compound-complex sentences (1.2%) were less common. Finally, this research has pedagogical significance for a better comprehension of academic writing, especially concerning the language use of a research article.

Abstract

The most significant problems with students' listening include difficulties comprehending accents, speaking speed, and limited vocabulary. Teaching materials that are relevant to student's interests might help them comprehend listening more effectively, as seen by their perceptions. This research aims to find out the correlation between students' listening comprehension and their perceptions of listening teaching materials. The sample consisted of 52 students from the Department of English Education at Padang State University in 2022 who had completed advanced listening courses and were chosen using cluster random sampling. The study instrument comprises the final exam score and questionnaire findings, which were analyzed using SPSS 25 for Windows and Pearson Product Moments. The findings reveal a sign (2-tailed) of 0.18 < 0.05, showing a significant correlation between the variables. As a result, these findings show a positive relationship between students' listening comprehension and their perception of listening teaching materials. This research highlights the need for a multifaceted approach in designing listening teaching materials and the importance of considering factors such as students' motivation, interest, and the overall quality of teaching to maximize listening comprehension and general teaching effectiveness. The implications of these findings reinforce the urgency to develop holistic learning approaches to improve the effectiveness of language teaching.
