Abstract

Speaking was one of the essential components in learning English as a second or foreign language. It was undeniable that many EFL learners need help with speaking performance. This research aimed to explore English Department students’ speaking problems. The research focused on speaking problems related to psychological and group work aspects. The data for this research was gained from students' responses to the distributed questionnaire. Last year English Education and English Literature students in the English Department UNP were chosen as the population. The sample consisted of 67 students selected through a simple random sampling technique. The data was analyzed using descriptive method with simple statistics. The findings of the research showed the speaking problems faced by students were related to anxiety, lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, shyness, and group work problems.

Abstract

Speaking plays a crucial role in the learning process, serving as a vital channel for effective interaction. The importance of speaking in learning is emphasized by recognizing language learning strategies (LLS) as valuable tools for enhancing proficiency in a foreign language. This research aims to analyze the learning strategies employed by second-year students in their speaking classes within the English department at UNP, majoring in English education. The study focuses on English education students enrolled in 2022, with a total population of 241 students from 10 classes. Using simple random sampling, 5 students from each class were selected as the sample, resulting in a total of 50 participants. A questionnaire, encompassing six aspects of language learning strategies (cognitive, metacognitive, memory, compensatory, affective, and social) adapted from Oxford's (1990) framework, was distributed to students in speaking classes. The questionnaires were administered online through Google Forms. The data analysis revealed that the strategy students most commonly employed in their speaking classes pertained to the cognitive aspect of language learning. The ranking of the aspects, from the first to the sixth, was cognitive, social, memory, metacognitive, compensatory, and affective.

Abstract

This research seeks to determine the effect of using KWL technique on EFL students’ reading ability at SMAN 2 GUNUNG TALANG. For this study pre-experimental with one group pretest posttest design was used. The sample in this study is class XII IPA 1 with 33 students. The data were collected from pretest and posttest which were given to the students. The results indicated that there was an improvement in a scores between the pretest and the posttest showed that there is improvement between pretest and posttest score. The pre-test score mean is 45.48 with 6 students received very poor classification, 18 students received poor classification, and 9 students received fairly classification. The post-test score mean is 50.24 with there is no student received very poor classification, 24 students received poor classification, 8 students received fairly classification, and 1 student received fairly good classification. It means that student’ posttest score were higher than pretest score, demonstrating that the KWL technique was effective in teaching reading

Abstract

The research aims to identify the effect of using Spirit Fingers from Webtoon application in improving students’ vocabulary mastery in eleventh-grade students. This research was a pre-experimental research design. The population of the study was Eleventh-grade students at SMA N 2 Sungai Limau. The population consists of 204 students who are classified into six classes. XI FASE F3 was selected as a sample through the cluster random sampling method. The total number of students in this class was 33 students. The research was conducted in seven meetings. The researcher used pre-tests and post-tests to collect the data. The instrument of this research was a vocabulary test. There were 37 multiple-choice questions. The result of the study shows that the significant value of the two-tailed paired sample t-test was less than 0.05. This means that this research’s null hypothesis (H0) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. It proved that using the Spirit Fingers story from the Webtoon application significantly improved students' vocabulary mastery at SMA N 2 Sungai Limau.

Abstract

This study was conducted to find out students' perceptions of vocabulary memorization quiz as their warm-up activity. The researcher used a descriptive method with questionnaires to get answers about students' perceptions. The purpose of this study was to find out how students' perceptions are based on four aspects of perception when using a vocabulary memorization quiz as their warm-up activity before starting learning. The sample of this study was 30 students at SMAN 2 Painan. Students were asked to fill in 15 statements in the questionnaire by choosing answers between strongly agree, agree, disagree, and strongly disagree. The statements were related to attractiveness, effectiveness, relevance, and motivation. The results showed that most of the 30 students who became the research sample positively perceived the use of vocabulary memorization quiz. In particular, the attractiveness aspect with five statements obtained a total average score of 3.3, the effectiveness and relevance aspects with three statements each obtained a total average score of 3.2 and the motivation aspect with four statements obtained a total average score of 3.1. From the results of this study, students' perceptions of using vocabulary memorization quiz based on four aspects, namely attractiveness, effectiveness, relevance, and motivation, show a positive perception. Through this study, it can also be concluded that the vocabulary memorization quiz is effectively used as a warm-up activity in students' English learning because it increases enthusiasm and motivation and makes it easier for students to master English vocabulary.

Abstract

This research utilized a quasi-experimental research design to evaluate the effect of the Wattpad application in improving students' writing skills at SMAN 8 Padang. The research population consisted of 339 students from class X or fase E, and the researcher applied the clustered random sampling method to select the sample. Class E3 was chosen as the experimental group using the Wattpad application, while class E6 was used as the control group using conventional learning methods. For eight meetings, this research included a pre-test at the first meeting, six treatment meetings, and a post-test at the last meeting. The research instrument used recount text as the focus of analysis. The analysis data of the Independent Sample t-test show that the significance value of two tailed is 0.040, which is lower than the alpha significance of 0.05, indicating that there is a good improvement of the Wattpad application on students' writing skills.

Abstract

This study explores EFL students' perceptions of using short stories with videos from LearnEnglishKids as part of their autonomous learning activities in a listening class. Employing a descriptive research approach with a quantitative methodology, the study focused on students from the Basic Listening class in the English Department at FBS, Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP). Data were gathered from 22 students through a questionnaire containing 25 closed statements rated on a 4-point Likert scale and interviews that concentrated on six key questions regarding students' perceptions of using short stories with videos from LearnEnglishKids as an autonomous learning activity. The findings suggest that most students enjoy and appreciate watching these short stories with videos, perceiving them as highly beneficial for enhancing comprehension, engaging both visual and auditory senses, and increasing overall enjoyment in learning English, which in turn significantly improves their listening skills. The average perception score of 3.23 out of 4 reflects a positive impact. The research suggests that incorporating digital resources like short stories with videos from LearnEnglishKids into autonomous learning activities in listening classes can be highly effective.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the students ability in writing fairy tales in terms of content, organization, vocabulary, language features, and mechanics. In this research, the researcher used a quantitative research. The researcher chose the design because the researcher wants to analyze the elective English students’ ability in writing fairy tales at SMAN 1 Lareh Sago Halaban. The instrument used in this a research was writing test. The population of this study was 207 elective English students; the sample of the writing test was 36 students. The sample of this research was chosen by using cluster random sampling. Writing test was used to find out the students ability in writing fairy tales, especially in the aspect of content, organization, vocabulary, language features, and mechanics.  Data were analyzed by combining Weigle's assessment theory and Harris's writing scale. The result of this research was show that average scores of the student's writing test were 74,30. It means that the ability of the students were in the "Good" level. More specifically, in the aspects of content, organization, vocabulary and language features, the students are at the "Good to average" level, but in the mechanics aspect the students are at the "Fair to poor" level.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze students' understanding of language features and the most difficult part of language features in narrative texts at SMPN 6 Gunung Talang. Descriptive research was the method used in this study with Grade eight students as the population. To determine the sample, the researcher used proportional random sampling where 30 eighth grade students were selected as samples in this study. There were two instruments used in this study which were tests and interviews. The results of the study showed that students' ability to understand language features in narrative texts showed an average score of 35.4. This score indicates that students generally fail to understand language features in narrative texts. Then, the most difficult part of the language features of narrative text for eighth grade students is the simple past tense with a percentage of 77% incorrect answers from 300 question occurrences.

Abstract

This research intended to know students’ problems at SMKN 4 Padang their reading comprehension. This program is implemented especially for grade twelve, that carried out for two days in first semester. This research includes a review of theories linked to the research concerns as well as the conceptual framework of the study. also, the researcher had done do practical field on this school before. so the researcher believed it was important to to analyze how the students’ perception on reading and teacher's methods. This study employed a quantitative methodology. The data were collected through questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire consisted 30 statements given to 53 students and interview consisted 13 questions given to 4 students. As a result of the study, most of the students not only gave the positive responses. but, also honest review about this problems in developing their reading skill. Providing the best advice for the new generation and how teachers teach students for the future. Most of They also hope in next future the teacher use the media for teaching like projector or something media, because of this learning activities which are more attractive and interesting. also, the student still think English lesson especially reading is difficult.
