Abstract

There is a debatable issue about the use of traditional and alternative assessment in ELT in the 21st century. The issue comes from the effectiveness of using traditional and alternative assessment to help teacher to assess the students in classroom situations in ELT. The problem is the teachers do not have better perspective in the challenges of assessment of ELT in the 21st century through alternative assessment or using both traditional and alternative assessment in classroom situation. That problem makes the use of assessment is not really effective to assess specific skill (listening, reading, writing, and speaking) of the students. This study aims, therefore, to investigate teachers’ perspective on the use of traditional and alternative assessment in ELT. The methodology of the research is using survey research with fifty English teachers as samples of this research. The data was collected by using questionnaire combine with open-ended questions relate with teachers’ perspective on traditional and alternative assessment. The results show that many teachers are really comfort with traditional assessment rather than alternative assessment since they claimed that traditional assessment is easier and more familiar to conduct in classroom situation. However, those perspectives have to be changed, the teacher should use both traditional and alternative assessment based on appropriate purposes and skills because there are challenges in assessment of ELT in 21st century to make the assessment process become more effective to improve students’ performance in English. It will be helpful by knowing the advantages and disadvantages of using traditional and alternative assessment in classroom situation to help the teacher to use them balance in the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Speaking is an important but difficult skill to master in English. One of the popular ways for non-English major students at UNP to practice their speaking skill is joining the speech division at UKBA. This research uses descriptive design and qualitative approach by involving 5 non-major English students to be interviewed in depth. The purpose of this study is to find out how students’ perception about the speech division and how activities in this division can support speaking practice. The results of this study indicate that the majority of non-major English students have a positive perception of the speech division. Based on the interviews, the activities in the speech division can support and help students to improve their speaking skills. The speech division also can help students to overcome their problem in speaking. However, in order to be more effective in helping students to learn to speak English, the speech division needs to do some evaluations such as upgrading classroom conditions and developing learning materials such as grammar. In addition, further research is recommended to examine students' perceptions of other divisions in UKBA related to grammar or other English skills.

Abstract

In the context of globalization of education, where students often come from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds, interactions between teachers and students play a key role in effective learning experiences. This research emerged from awareness of the need to understand how interactions between teachers and students occur in international classrooms, particularly in biology and chemistry departments. This research aims to analyze differences in student interactions in international classes based on science faculties. This research is comparative research obtained through random sampling. The sample for this research was 88 students who were enrolled in the international class program at the science faculty. Data was collected using an in-class interaction instrument with 29 items. The analysis technique uses descriptive and independent sample t-tests. These findings indicate that there are significant differences in the level of interaction between students majoring in biology and chemistry in international classes. Apart from that, classroom interaction also provides opportunities for collaboration between students so that they can increase their self-confidence in their learning abilities. Building strong relationships among students also contributes to increasing positive attitudes towards learning through motivation and engagement.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the perceptions of eighth-grade students regarding the use of animated videos in teaching writing recount texts at SMPN 7 Padang. Recognizing the challenges students often face in generating ideas, organizing thoughts, and structuring their writing when creating recount text, this research explores animated videos as an innovative pedagogical tool. Utilizing a quantitative research design, the study involved 62 students from two purposively selected classes (VIII.7 and VIII.8) who had prior experience with animated videos in their writing instruction. Data were collected using a 40-item questionnaire, structured around four key indicators: engagement, preference, practicality, and impact on writing skills. The findings reveal a predominantly positive perception among students towards the integration of animated videos. The overall mean score for student perception was 3.03, falling within the "Positive" category. Specifically, animated videos were highly perceived as engaging, with an average score of 3.07, indicating increased student interest and motivation. Students also showed a strong preference for animated videos over traditional methods (mean score 3.03), particularly when the videos were interactive and illustrative. Furthermore, the practicality of animated videos in simplifying complex concepts and visualizing text structures was acknowledged (mean score 2.99). Most significantly, students perceived a positive impact on their writing skills (mean score 3.04), noting improvements in creativity, organization, and overall clarity in their recount texts. These results suggest that animated videos serve as effective supplementary tools, enhancing both the learning experience and writing outcomes in English language instruction.
