The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

Abstract

Writing is a process that allows students to elaborate their ideas and background knowledge creatively through written expression. In the 2013 curriculum, several text genres learned by Senior High School Students are divided into two parts. Those are functional text and monolog text. One of them is procedure text which belongs to a monologue text. However, there are some problems faced by students in writing procedure text. They are not able to organize their idea, do not understand the generic structure and language feature of the procedure text, not able to write an assignment and get distracted easily during writing task and the students also have other problems such as lack of vocabulary and find difficulty with sentence structure and word order. The other problems also come from the teacher itself. In order to help the students in writing a procedure text, the teachers should prepare a new method which creates the different learning style in the classroom. Moreover, the method given should be appropriate and effective for the students. In this case, guiding question technique is the appropriate applied in teaching writing procedure text. This technique presents the interesting way in the process of learning.

Abstract

Using Write Pair Square Technique in Teaching Writing at Junior High SchoolThis paper discusses how to use Write Pair Square Technique in teaching writing at Junior High School. Based on the writers’ experience in teaching English, many students find the difficulties in teaching writing. Many students have difficulties in teaching writing, such as they lack of idea to write; they have less grammar; inappropriate technique when doing teaching and learning process. Write pair square is a cooperative learning that can motivate students in learning. The teacher divides the student for a small group of four that can be divided into pairs. In the first, each member in a group of four work individually to write answers. After that, students pair with a partners and share their work or answers. Then, two pairs of the foursome combine (squaring), and take turns to share and discuss what they had just thought or written. The team members try to help one another by giving comments to improve their works. By applying Write Pair Square Technique in teaching writing, the teacher can reach the goal of teaching writing to junior high school students. Keywords:Writing, Write Pair Square Technique

Abstract

 Reading is an important skill that is needed to get information from written text. In reading skill, students not only  have to read but they have to comprehend the text in order to get the meaning from the text that they have been read.  Although, many students still have difficulties in comprehending the text and low motivation in reading. It caused that there is a tendency the teacher does not use teaching strategy appropriately. That is why this paper is conducted in order to explain how to use “The Power of Two” strategy in teaching reading for senior high school students’. “The Power of Two” strategy is conducted to help students in comprehending the text by work in pairs so that students can change their mind with each other. This strategy will facilitate students to figure out their problems in reading. It also can make students enjoy and relax in reading process. Thus, students can improve their reading skill ability.

Abstract

Abstract This research is a descriptive research that is aimed to describe students’ speaking problems. The research was done at Poltekkes Kemenkes RI Padang. The population of this research were the first year of nursing students at Poltekkes Kemenkes RI Padang. There were 30 students as the sample of this research and chosen by using random sampling technique. The instruments used were the questionnaire (close-ended & open-ended statements) and transcription of video recording. The result of this research showed that disfluency was the significant problem for the students. Then, the significant causes of the speaking problems were inhibition and mother tongue use.Key words: Speaking problem, causes of the speaking problem

Abstract

The study was aimed to find out the ability of the student of the second year English Department in using English grammatical collocations.The population were the students of the second year English Department at UniversitasNegeri Padang. The samples were the students which take Essay Writing subject with academic year 2017/2018. The samples were taken by random sampling. They are 37 students from 5 classes.The level demonstrates that the use of English collocations are in the level of very good. Based on the quantitative data, the use of English grammatical collocations are 90.32% for correct collocations and 9.68% for incorrect collocations. English grammatical collocations are divided into 8 categories. They are G1, G2, G3, G4, G5, G6, G7, and G8. In addition, the use of English grammatical collocations for G1 is 91.67% for correct collocations and 8.33% for incorrect collocations. G2 shows 70% for correct collocations and 30% for incorrect collocations. G3 shows 94.01% for correct collocations and 5.99% for incorrect collocations. G4 and G5 show 100% for correct collocations. G6 shows 81.12 for correct collocations and 18.88% for incorrect collocations. G7 shows 100% for correct collocations. G8 shows 85.80% for correct collocations and 14.20% for incorrect collocations.

Abstract

Speaking is an important skill that used to communicate directly with other people. In English speaking skill the students have several problems, such as the students less self confidence and the low motivation given by the teacher and from the students themselves. Those problems can cause students' speaking skill still weak. Therefore, this paper explains a strategy for learning English in the form of a game called the Quartet Cards Game. This game can be used to increase students’ interest in English especially speaking skills.

Abstract

This article is aimed to describe the students’ ability in answering reading questions with HOTS and the mistakes made by the students in answering those questions. The population of this research was the eleven grade students at SMA N 3 Bukittinggi. The Students at XI MIPA 3 were chosen to be the sample of the research by using cluster random sampling. There were 36 students involved in this research. The instrument used in this research was reading test. In the reading test, the researcher provided the sample students five analytical exposition test with forty five multiple choice questions which is surrounded by analyzing, evaluating and creating questions. The indicators of the test were adopted from Bloom (1956) and Anderson Taxonomy (2001). Based on the result of this research, it was found that the students’ ability to answer reading questions with HOTS was fairly good. It was proved by the average score obtained by the students which are analyzing (75.78), evaluating (75.05) and creating (72.19). Furthermore, the most mistake made by the students was producing idea to solve problem.
