Abstract

Reading is not just a source of information and exciting experiences, it is also a key part of language training at all stages, as it facilitates various ways of learning. Reading strategies are one of method to help students in improving their reading ability and make easier in grasp the meaning of the text.  This study aimed to investigate the reading strategies used by English Department Students in tertiary level at Universitas Negeri Padang. Specifically, it focused to identify the reading strategies frequently used by the students. Sixty-three undergraduate students were randomly selected as the respondents for this study, a fifty-item questionnaire which focused on the frequency of use of pre, while, and post-reading strategies was applied in the study. In addition, the researcher used interview method according to ten-high score based on questionnaire result to delved students’ reading strategies in reading phases. English Students at UNP were observed have been found to typically re-check readings or phrases that were not known during the reading process.

Abstract

This research is aimed to know the students’ ability and their perceptions toward the difficulties in comprehending analytical exposition text in different levels of questions which based on Barret’s taxonomy of reading comprehension. This research was conducted at SMA Negeri 2 Batusangkar. The population of this research are all second year students in academic year 2019/2020 with the total number 244 students. Based on the population, the sample of this research is 37 students selected using simple random sampling. This research is descriptive quantitative research and used test and questionnaire as the instruments. This research found that the students’ ability in comprehending different level of questions in analytical exposition text was fair because the average score of students was 51,24. The students have good ability in comprehending analytical exposition questions in form of evaluation level. This research also found that students tend to have difficulties in comprehending analytical exposition text in form of inference level.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify, classify and explain the errors and source of error that the second grade students of MAN 2 Padang made in using preposition based on surface strategy taxonomy and Brown’s theory (2000). The instrumentation of this research is recount text. In this research, the researcher uses a qualitative descriptive method. The researcher reveals the types of errors and explains the sources of error that occurred. The result of the research shows that 144 errors occurred at the second grade students of Man 2 Padang in using preposition. The researcher found the highest percentage of type of error is misformation with total number 78 errors or 54,16%. The other finding is sources of errors which has interlingual transfer as the highest soure of error with total number 114 error or 79,16%.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out students reading barriers at English Department UNP. This research was done through the descriptive qualitative method with 212 populations. The samples of this study were 63 students chosen by using random sampling techniques. The data were collected through questionnaire adapted from Thong and Hao (2017). The findings of this research indicate that in language factors the most barriers chosen by students are the cultural background with percentage score 66,48% included as a high category, then, discourse included in an average category with 50,63 of the total percentage score of barrier that was chosen by students. Moreover, in the non-language factor, the psychological is the most barrier mostly chosen by the students that have the highest percentage score with 73,46% included in the high category, next, the indicator that is rarely chosen is reading habit with 59,56% of the total barriers which means it included in average criteria. Key words: reading, reading barriers, factor in reading barriers

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the motivation of the English Education 2016 Universitas Negeri Padang in reading academic articles and factors influenced their motivation. This research was done through descriptive qualitative method with 84 populations. The samples of this study were 84 students chosen by using total sampling techniques. The data were collected through a questionnaire adapted from Reading Motivation Questionnaire by Wigfield and Guthrie (1997). The findings of this research indicate that: (1) English Education 2016 students have high motivation because 66 students are in 2,51 – 3,25 mean range. It means that half of the samples are at high level motivation to read academic articles and there are only 6 samples that have low level motivation in reading academic articles (the mean score is 1,76 - 2,50). Moreover, 12 students have very high motivation in reading academic articles (the mean score is in 3,26 - 4,00 range); (2) factors that influenced the motivation of English Education 2016 students’ in reading academic articles are dominated by intrinsic factors.

Abstract

In this research, the researcher discuss about how does the teacher implement techniques in using video as media in teaching English and how effective that techniques using during teaching and learning process in classroom especially for English teachers. The design of this research was the descriptive research. The researcher described and analyzed the phenomenon in the school. English teacher in SMK N 1 Padang Panjang used active viewing technique when the teachers used video as media in teaching English and it is effective to use video as media and active viewing as the technique. The teacher used active viewing technique during teaching and learning process and the teacher used all the steps in indicators for active viewing technique. The students understand about the material that has explained by a video in English teaching. The result of the research finding prove that the teacher has implementation active viewing technique in teaching and learning process at SMK N 1 Padang Panjang, especially in teaching English is running well in implement active viewing technique.Key words: Video, techniques of using video.

Abstract

High Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) is the ability to think in the complex process which useful for transferring the knowledge in real life, thinking critically, and solving the problems. Categories of HOTS level are analyzing, evaluating, and creating.  To assess those abilities, HOTS can we find in reading exercises. This research is aimed to analyze the HOTS questions in reading exercises. This research is descriptive qualitative. Data was collected from Bright an English course book for grade IX of junior high school. This study using indicators in Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy as instrument. The result showed that the the total of HOTS questions is 78 questions or 18,9% from 412 reading questions. The percentage of each HOTS category are 11,9% for analyzing level, 5,8% evaluating level, and 1,2% creating level. Nevertheless, HOTS questions is not the dominant level in this coursebook.  Keywords:  High Order Thinking Skill, reading questions, revised Bloom’taxonomy

Abstract

Writing is a very complex skill and difficult to master. Difficulties in writing can be seen in various aspects of writing. There are various factors that cause difficulties in writing. This study aims to analyze the kind of writing difficulties faced by English teachers. In addition, this study also identifies factors that cause writing difficulties, namely psychological, socio-cultural, and linguistic factors. This research uses descriptive quantitative methods. Data were collected from 5 English teachers who teach at SMKN 8 Padang. In collecting data, the teachers were asked to write an academic essay with the topic of English for vocational high school students. To find out the factors that cause teacher difficulties in writing, data were collected through interviews. The results of the study aimed at teachers faced difficulties in every aspect of writing. they were difficulties in contents, organization, language use, and vocabulary. Then, the dominant factors that cause writing difficulties were psychological factors.

Abstract

Educational systems worldwide has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, leading to the near-total closures of schools, and colleges. Most governments around the world have temporarily closed educational institutions in order to restrain the spread of Covid-19 . This requires all elements of education to adapt and to continue the teaching learning process. The Indonesia Government assigns the distance learning sistem using online learning. This is effective solution to activate classroom eventhough school have been closed to reduce the spread of covid-19. Many platforms of  digital sources have been implemented by school, one of them is using Google Classroom. This research aims to get review of using Google Classroom during this pandemic. This study was library research that describe the phenemenon of using Google Classroom. The result of the research finding prove that it is effective to use this platform. It is one way to be considered by the schools and teachers to provide students by e learning that can be attracted for the students, while the process of teacher learning move to virtual classes. Key words: Google Classroom, Pandemic, Covid-19, Online Learning
