Abstract

The two twisted complex problems of this nation are poverty and unemployment. The indicators are clear. Statistic data still show the national poverty rate still reaches the limit of 12 percent of the total population, while the unemployment rate is still more than 6 percent of the total labor force. Since the Old Order, New Order, until the Reform Order (even Order Post Reformation later), the problem of unemployment and poverty will remain a sensitive issue and the problems that will never be resolved. This study departs from the author’s interest observation in the field of social realities associated with poverty and unemployment. The type of research method is qualitative, deliberately designed to rely on the study of the relevant literature. Researcher find the concept of “iron triangle entrepreneurship”, which is expected to be a single solution to address social problems such as poverty and unemployment by integrating the higher education institutios, corporation, and bureaucracy. The difficulty of the ruling governments over the years in providing solutions to the problems of unemployment and poverty is due to the coordination factor. Each element of this nation run on its own, there is no synergy and integration among the various elements of society. Students as high education representation, government as representative of bureaucracy, and entrepreneurs as representative of corporation, are three parties holding the key to success in carrying out the policy of “iron triangle entrepreneurship”, as long as they work and move as if it was in his world respectively. In fact, it would be very powerful if the three parties collaborate and work together to give birth to a monumental work that educate the public.

Abstract

Women’s participation is an integral part of social empowerment, yet there are still problematic issues to be tackled and a lot of gaps to be filled concerning with women’s empowerment. This study aims to describe women’s participation in the stages of implementation of the social empowerment programme in Bantul regence, to explain the reasons for women’s involvement in the implementation of the programme, and to investigate factors that support and inhibit women’s empowerment. Research questions included: Why women in Bantul regency are willing to get involved in the implementation of social empowerment programme? How do these women get involved at each stage of the implementation of social empowerment programme? What are the support and inhibit factors in the process of women’s empowerment in Bantul regency? A quantitative approach in the form of embedded case study is used in this study due to its determined focus. Primary data were collected through observation, non-structured interviews, and indepth interviews. Secondary data were collected from related document such as government and NGO reports. The data for the study was analysed by following Miles and Huberman’s interactive model of data analysis (1994).This study shows that although women have been involved and participated in each stage of social empowerment programme, at earlier stage they have done so not by their own conscience but to comply with programme requirement imposed by the administrator. At later stage, their involvements can be seen as a passive participation and were based on a desire to study and to satisfy their constituents. The inhibiting factors in the process of women’s empowerment werethe internal disagreement among programme administrators; women were forced to become programme administrators; over-involvements of the government administrators; the programmes were more physical or material oriented; elitist programmes; lack of family support to women’s involvements. The factors that supported the process of women’s empowerment were the determination in applying women’s empowerment principles and the strong will to learn among the women who in charge of the programme administrators.

Abstract

Smartphones and Gadgets are reliable, cheap and easy media for the youth in their search for information on sexuality and reproductive health related issues in the Millennium era. The youths at their adolescent age have not yet acquired sufficient knowledge to differentiate between right and wrong, which makes them vulnerable to the practice of trying and emulating new things that come their way. One such tendency is the prone of the youth to pre marital sex. Sex and Sexuality are no longer taboo, but on the contrary have become commodities, a problem that underscores the importance of education about sex and reproductive health. The family, which should be the bedrock on this, lacks sufficient knowledge necessary to play its role. The conveyance process is bedeviled by information, communication, and psychological gaps, which force the youths to make their own search for answers. The negative impact of all this is reflected in the rapid spread of HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, KTD and abortion.

Abstract

Fishing activity has been carried out by fishermen in Lamahala for a long time. It has even been their ancestor heritage for over hundreds of years who migrated from the Mollucas Islands in the north to the village of Lamahala in the southern hemisphere. The hereditary activity which has been carried out for generations can hold out because it is supported by the potential and abundant marine resources there, especially in the Sawu Sea and its surrounding areas. The meeting of two underwater currents, that drive the rising movement of water mass from the bottom to the surface layer of the sea, provides wealthy nutrition that can fertilize the waters which are useful for the growth of various planktons as the source of food for numerous fish species. The problem is the rich marine resources have not been able to raise the level of welfare to be better than before. In fact, it is no doubt that the courage of fishermen there to conquer the huge waves on the Sawu Sea is very high even though they only use a small boat and rely on natural signs so as not to be lost in the vast ocean. It seems that poverty will never get out of their life because of as much as 477 of 1,327 households in the village are still in the level of pre-prosperous family. Based on the reality of their current life, this paper attempts to explain the social dynamics of Lamahala’s fishermen.
