Abstract

Information and communication technology (ICT) has grown exponentially during the past three decades considerably changed many aspects in industrial and trading sectors. Currently, it is revolutionizing education. One of the most important results of the revolution is the emergent of blended learning, which combines the best of face-to-face and ICT application. This article reviews current ideas, practices, and empirical information concerning the nature of blended learning in general and Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), a version of blended learning particularly used in English Language Teaching (ELT), in particular. All of these will hopefully enrich creative ideas for implementing blended learning in ELT to enhance our student’s achievement.

Abstract

The objectives of this investigation were twofold: 1) to identify language learning strategies commonly used by Thai EFL learners, and 2) to determine the roles of three variables contributing to their strategy use: language proficiency and motivation. A set of questionnaires consisting of the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL), and the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) was given to 1,405 Thai university students studying English. The analysis revealed that, in general, memory strategies were found to be the most common learning strategies, whereas social strategies were the least common. Motivation was reported to be the most significant variables affecting their choices of language learning strategies. The analysis revealed certain elucidating facts that can be utilized in future planning of English language teaching to improve the English performance of Thai learners.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out teachers' and undergraduate students' perceptions of the importance of using the Internet to study English. This was measured through the use of questionnaires distributed to 10 teachers and 100 students; and interviews conducted with 5 teachers and 20 students. Based on the findings, it was concluded that in learning English, students need interactions with their teachers and friends. To facilitate the interactions, the Internet, particularly the websites designed for learning English is a good alternative. However, it should not be the only instrument used to improve the learners' language proficiency. Numerous strategies teachers can choose to implement it are also recommended.

Abstract

This study was conducted to improve young learners' English vocabulary. To attain the objective, a three-cycled action research was carried out to teach vocabularies by using the story reading technique. The participants were 10 students of the K-1 grade in Grace Kids Preschool, Jakarta. The quantitative data collected using tests were analyzed using SPSS, and the qualitative data collected using observation and interview techniques were analyzed descriptively. The results indicated that the story reading techniques improved the participants' vocabulary mastery, as shown by the increase of the mean scores of the tests conducted, i.e. 42 (in the pre-test) to 62 (post-test of Cycle I) to 80 (post-test of Cycle II), and to 92 (post-test of Cycle III). Based on the findings, it was concluded that the use of the story-reading technique was effective to improve kindergarten students' vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This study aimed at enriching kindergarten students' English vocabulary at Singa School, Jakarta. The participants were 21 students of the K-2 grade. The action research was conducted in two cycles, in which the participants were taught vocabulary by using pop-songs. The quantitative data, collected using tests, and the qualitative data, collected using observation and document study techniques indicated that the use of pop-songs enriched the participants' vocabulary, as shown by the increase of the mean scores of the tests conducted, i.e. 33.57 (in the pre-test) to 50 ( post-test of Cycle I) to and 80 (post-test of Cycle II). The t-tests in the two cycles resulted in tcount (7.087)>ttable (1.725) and tcount (9.216) >ttable (1.725, respectively. Based on the findings, it could be concluded that the use of pop-songs was effective to enrich kindergarten students' vocabulary.
