Abstract

AbstractThe objective of this research was to investigate whether or not there was an effect of using Total Physical Response (TPR) technique in students’ speaking ability to the eleventh graders at SMA PSKD 7 Depok. To attain the aim, both pre and the post-test were administered to two classes consisting 25 students each. Data analysis showed that there is a significant effect of using TPR technique in students’ speaking ability; it can be seen from the mean score of the post test between experimental (67.36) and control (51.52) class. Based on the findings, it could be concluded that the use of TPR technique was effective to improve Eleventh graders’ speaking ability. Abstract

AbstractThis research was aimed to determine whether youtube video significantly effected the tenth graders’ writing procedural text achievement at SMA Corpatarin or not. This research was experimental research. The population of this research were 38 students and through random sampling method, control class (19 students) and experimental class (19 students) were taken. To attain the objective, data were colleted by the pre and post-test to both classes. The quantitavie data analysis was conducted with the SPSS version 17. To test the hypotheses, the researcher used normality test and homogeneity test. The results of the data analysis showed that the sample data of this research was normally distributed and homogeneous population variance and based on hypotheses test showed Sig.2-tailed (0.000) < Sig.level (0.05). It can be concluded that youtube video significantly affected the tenth graders’ writing procedural text achievement at SMA Corpatarin. Abstract

AbstractThe method used in this research was action research applied in two cycles. This research was conducted to improve the Seventh Graders’ English vocabulary in SMP 1 PSKD, Jakarta. The 24 students of the seventh grade who participated in this study were taught vocabularies by using the TGT technique. The quantitative data, collected using tests, were analyzed by using the independent and paired sample t-test on SPSS version 22 program. The qualitative data, collected using the researchers’ diary notes, questionaire, open ended question sheets, and observation sheets, were analyzed descriptively. The results indicated that the TGT technique improved the participants’ English vocabulary, as shown by the increase of the mean scores of the tests conducted, i.e. the pre-test 55,94 (12,5%) increased to 66,81 (50%) of post-test of cycle I and to 83,23 (87,5%) of the post-test of cycle II. The statistical test also indicated that the use of TGT significantly increased the students’ English vocabulary. Based on the findings, it could be concluded that the use of TGT technique was effective to improve the seventh grade students’ English vocabulary. Abstract

AbstractThis was a research report on developing students’ vocabulary through watching English cartoon films. The objectives of this research were to develop students’ vocabulary and students’ responses on learning vocabulary through watching English cartoon film at SMP BHAKTI, Jakarta. This research used classroom action research (CAR) method in which the students consisted of 23 eighth graders of SMP BHAKTI, Jakarta and comprised15 males and 8 females. To collect the data the researcher used test and non-test techniques. The test technique was realized in pre-test and post-test; while the non-test one was in questionnaire, observation sheet, and diary notes. Based on the test analysis results, it was found that the mean score of the pretest, post-test in Cycle 1 and 2 were 60.73 points, 80.86 points, and 90.00 points respectively. The gain between the post-test and pre-test scores in Cycle 1 was 33.14% and the gain between the post-test in Cycle 1 and post-test scores in Cycle 2 was 11.30%. The gain between pre-test and post-test scores in Cycle 2 was 48.69%. Therefore, it can be concluded that watching English cartoon films could develop the eighth graders’ vocabulary of SMP BHAKTI, Jakarta. Besides, based on the questionnaire, observation sheet, and diary notes analysis results, it was revealed that students agreed that watching English cartoon films was a good strategy to develop their vocabulary. The conclusion is that watching English cartoon films can develop students’ vocabulary.Keywords: English cartoon films, vocabulary, action research

Abstract

AbstractThe objectives of this study were to develop students’ speaking skills using Talking Chips technique and also to investigate the students’ interest in the use of Talking Chips technique inEFL class. This research was a two-cycled action research conducted in SMK PSKD 1 Jakarta. The subject of this study was the tenth graders of Accounting Class 1 consisting of 10participants from SMK 1 PSKD. The quantitative data, collected using tests, were analyzed by using independent and paired sample t-test on SPSS version 17 program. The qualitative data collected through interview, questionnaire, and observation techniques and were analyzed descriptively. The result indicated that there was significant improvement of students’ scores where the mean of students’ pre-test scores was 55.00. It increased 59.60 in post-test I and 73.40 in post-test II. Based on the result, it was concluded that through implementation of Talking Chips technique students’ speaking skills could improve. Abstract

Abstract The main objectives of this study are to discover and examine the students’ perception on the use of discovery learning strategy on reading comprehension and to see whether the students are interested in using discovery learning strategy on improving their reading comprehension. This study is a survey research. This study was conducted to all students of the English Teaching Study Program (ETSP), Christian University of Indonesia. To achieve the objectives, data were collected using questionnaire and interviews. The data was analyzed descriptively through Microsoft Excel 2007. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that the majority of students agreed that discovery learning strategy can enhance their reading comprehension and they want this strategy implemented in their reading class. Furthermore, they were interested on learning or improving reading comprehension through discovery learning strategy. Keywords: reading comprehension, discovery learning strategy, perception
