Journal of English Teaching (JET) is a professional, double blind peer-reviewed international journal devoted to promoting dissemination of scholarly knowledge and exchange of academic research and professional findings on all aspects of second or foreign language (L2) learning and teaching. Abstract

AbstractThe objectives of this research were to improve the students’ speaking skill and students’ interest about learning speaking by using Project-based learning. This research used classroom action research method in which the subject was the 25 ten graders of SMA PSKD 7 Depok and the subjects consisted thirteen males and twelve females. The quantitative data were analyzed by computing the students’ score of pre-test, post-test 1, and post-test2. Based on the data results, the mean score of pre-test, post-test in Cycle1, and post-test Cycle2 were respectively 49.12, 66.4, and 70.08. The gain of pre-test to post-test1 was 35.17%, the gain of post-test1in cycle 1 to post-test cycle 2 was 6.14%, and from the pre-test to post-test 2 in cycle 2 was 43.48%. The qualitative data were described based on interview and field-note to the improvement of students’ speaking skill. The findings showed that Project-based learning could improve the students’ speaking skill, it is suggested to use this method in teaching speaking skill. Keywords: CAR, Project-based learning

Abstract

AbstractThe objectives of this study were to examine the students’ perception on the use of picture in writing descriptive paragraph and to investigate whether the students were interested in the use of picture in writing descriptive paragraph. This study was a survey using the qualitative and survey design. It involved 34 students of English Teaching Study Program, Christian University of Indonesia. To achieve the objectives, qualitative and quantitative data concerning the students’ perceptions and interest were collected through a questionnaire and interview. The survey was administered to the eight semester students of 2012/2013 academic year. To support this research the data obtained through the open ended questionnaire, interview was conducted toward four students. The quantitative data were analyzed by using Microsoft Excel 2007, while the qualitative data were analyzed descriptively. The result of this study indicated that almost all of the students agreed to use the picture in developing their descriptive paragraph writing. The use of picture in writing also helped them understand the descriptive paragraphs even though they knew there was another media, i.g. realia, which could help them write a descriptive paragraph. Thus it is sugested that the English teachers should use this technique to improve students’ descriptive paragraph writing. Keywords: perception, picture, writing, descriptive paragraph

Abstract

AbstractThe main objective of this research is to improve the eighth graders’ reading comprehension through Jigsaw technique at SMP 1 PSKD. This research is a classroom action research in two cycles. The research was done on April 12th, 2016 until May 24th, 2016. The subject of the research was the students of VIII class at SMP 1 PSKD. There were 27 students (13 males and 14 females). The instruments of the test are pre-test and post-test. The non instruments test are observation sheets, interview, and researcher’s diary notes. The improvement of the eighth graders’ reading comprehension scores can be seen from the result of the pre-test and post-test. The average score of the students in the pre-test was 49.03 points and in cycle 1 the average score of the students was 65.78 points. So the increase between the two tests was 16.75 or 34.16%. In the cycle 2, the average of students’ score was 75.85 points. The result of the posttest 1 was 65.78 points, so the increase from post-test 1 in cycle 1 to post-test 2 in cycle 2 was 10.07 points or 15.75%. The improvement from pre-test to post-test 2 was 54.70%. In addition to the score increase, jigsaw technique can improve the students’ enthusiasm in learning reading comprehension. It can be seen from the result of the interview. The participants were interested in learning reading comprehension through jigsaw technique because jigsaw technique helped them in comprehending the text. This research was also supported by the result of researcher’s diary notes. The researcher’s diary notes shows that there were a positive changed from cycle 1 to cycle 2. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that jigsaw technique could improve the eighth graders’ reading comprehension at SMP 1 PSKD. Abstract

ABSTRACTThe main objective of this research is to find out whether or not there is any significant effect of using English video on students‟ vocabulary mastery at SMP PSKD 6 Depok. This study is an experimental research that consists of two classes, the experimental class and control class. The research was done on April 2016 until May 2016. The subject of the research was eighth graders‟ students VIII B and VIII C at SMP PSKD 6 Depok. The consisted of 20 students. The instruments of the test were pre-test and post-test. The improvement of the eighth graders‟ vocabulary scores can be seen from the results of the pre-test and post-test. The mean scores of the experimental class in the pre-test was 57.35 points. While the mean scores of the control class in the pre-test was 52.60 points. The average score of the experimental class in the post-test was 71.40 points. While the average scores of the control class in the post-test was 60.00 points. The data obtained clarified that there was a significant effect of using English video on students‟ vocabulary mastery. By using English video, students‟ in experimental class ranged of the average score from 57.35 points until 71.40 points. The hypotheses tested in this research showed that there was a significant effect of English video. The value of Sig. of equality variances (0.760) was higher than Sig. α (0.05). This finding indicates that the sample data were taken from homogeneous population variances. Based on the result of the research, it was concluded that the use of English video on students‟ vocabulary mastery at SMP PSKD 6 Depok. The writer suggests using English video is one of the effective technique to improve students‟ vocabulary, especially in teaching English in eighth graders. Abstract

AbstractThe objective of this research was to improve the eleventh graders’ recount text writing skill. To attain the objective a two-cycled classroom action research was conducted in SMA PSKD 7 Depok. The 28 students of the eleventh graders who participated in this research were taught recount text through mind mapping technique. The quantitative data, collected using tests, were analyzed by using statistical analysis technique. The qualitative data, collected using observation sheets and interview guide, were analyzed by using descriptive analysis technique. The results indicated that the mind mapping technique improved the eleventh graders’ recount text writing skill, as shown by the increase of the mean scores of the tests conducted, i.e. 52,61 (in the pretest) to 70.61 ( post-test of cycle 1) to 80.29 (post-test of cycle 2). Based on the findings, it could be concluded that through implementation of mind mapping technique, students’ recount text writing skill could improve. Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to find out the effect of using clustering in teaching descriptive text writing skill to the seventh graders at SMP 3 PSKD Jakarta. It involved two groups: control and experimental. This implemented in different techniques; conventional method and clustering technique. The conventional method was implemented in the control class; while the clustering technique was implemented in the experimental class. Based on the findings, it was concluded that students need a technique to build students’ interested in writing. However, it should not be the only technique used to improve students’ writing skill. Abstract

AbstractThe objective of this study was to find out the correlation between students’ motivation and their English learning achievement at SMK 1 PSKD. This study used quantitative method. The instrument used was a 17 Likert-scaled questionnaires. The score of English learning achievement was taken from the report final exam of eleventh grade. The respondents of thisstudy were XI AK and AP at SMK 1 PSKD. The total number of respondents was 38 students. This study used a survey or correlation study. Data analysis showed there was positive correlation between students’ motivation and their English learning achievement. The number of correlation coefficient was 0.324 which means that the correlation coefficient was weak. The coefficient of determination was 10.5% which means such amount contributed on English learning achievement while 89.5% was other undefined factors.
