Abstract

This paper aim to describe:1) Form of gender injustice to female characters in Sambal & Ranjang short story by Tenni Purwanti, 2) To describe the image of woman in the Sambal di Ranjang short story by Tenni Purwanti by using a feminist literary criticism approach. The research is a qualitative study using descriptive methods. Sources of data in this paper is the short story contained in the book of Sambal & Ranjang by Tenni Purwanti, published by Gramedia Pustaka Utama, Jakarta, first edition, October 2020. Instrument research is the researcher himself because the researcher as data collector and also as data analyzer.  The conclusion of this study is the physical, psychological, and social image of the main female characters in the Sambal di Ranjang short story by Tenni Purwanti showing a view of woman.

Abstract

The problem to be discussed in this research is how the principle of language politeness in the drama play Ayahku Pulang by Usmar Ismail is reviewed from 6 maxims, namely: the maxim of wisdom, the maxim of generosity, the maxim of appreciation, the maxim of simplicity, the maxim of consensus, and the maxim of sympathy. Ismail describes the struggle of a father who has the heart to leave his wife and young children in pursuit of wealth, so that he forgets his responsibility as a father to his children. speech contains the implied words in it that are interesting to research on the principles of politeness. Language politeness is a matter of showing awareness of the dignity of others in language, both when using spoken language and in written language. The purpose of this research is to describe the principles of language politeness in the drama play Ayahku Pulang karya Usmar Ismail in terms of six maxims. This type of research is qualitative with descriptive methods. The data of this research are utterances in the drama play Ayahku Pulang by Usmar Ismail. The data source in this research is the drama script Ayahku Pulang. the work of Usmar Ismail. From the research data findings, the researcher found 34 data, namely: the maxim of wisdom there are 6 data, the maxim of generosity there are 6 data, the maxim of appreciation has 6 data, the maxim of simplicity has 3 data, the maxim of consensus contains 2 data, and the maxim of sympathy has 11 data. The conclusion of this research is that the maxim that is mostly found is sympathetic maxims.

Abstract

Adjective clause is a dependent clause that modifies a noun. It describes, identifies or gives further information about a noun. In this case, the writer analyzes the novel named Another Piece of My Heart by Jane Green because it contains a lot of adjective clauses and gives the contribution for teaching grammar. This study aimed to find out the kinds adjective clauses in the novel, the dominant adjective clauses in the novel and the contributions of adjective clauses to the English grammar teaching. The writer used the adjective clause theory of Thomson and Martinet which defining relative pronouns used in the adjective clauses namely refer to persons, things, places, times and reason. The research design of this study was qualitative research. The writer collected all the required data from Jane Green’s novel entitled Another Piece of My Heart. The data is sentences that contain adjective clauses. There are about 413 adjective clauses found in the novel as the data sources consist of 197 adjective clauses referring to a person with percentage 47.7%. 161 adjective clauses referring to a thing with 39%, 32 adjective clauses referring to a time with percentage 7.7%, 20 adjective clauses referring to a place with 4.8%and 3 adjective clauses referring to a reason with percentage 0.8%. The adjective clauses referring to a person by using relative pronoun who is the most dominant used in the Jane Green’s novel Another Piece of My Heart with a percentage of 43.6%. The writer also takes conclusions that the result of this research can be used by the teachers in the teaching grammar. The data samples which are found in this research can be used when the teacher is delivering the lesson to the students.

Abstract

This study focuses on figurative found in popular songs of Secondhand Serenade, they are "Broken", "A twist in my story" and "I hate this song". The data were taken from the three songs of Secondhand Serenade which consist of many types of figurative language by using Perrine’s (1992) theory. The descriptive method was applied in this research, the data source from the research is song lyrics from the three songs of Secondhand Serenade. The writer found 17 sentences containing figurative languages in Secondhand Serenade's songs. All of these terms are divided into six categories, They are, hyperbole, personification, metonymy, simile, apostrophe, and symbol. The writer more often found types of figurative language that contain hyperbole. Nine sentences are almost found in every song from the three songs of Secondhand Serenade. By reading this study, the writer hopes this research could give more understanding in the analysis of figurative language to the reader. The writer hopes this paper inspires all students who want to research in the same field. This study shows to the reader types of figurative language found in popular songs of Secondhand Serenade.

Abstract

As a feature of translation, the concept of equivalence is a crucial issue which have to be considered by the translator. Equivalence is a term proposed by Baker (1992) for gaining the equal meaning between the source text and the target text. In translating the source text, some non-equivalence problems happen since several source language has unequal meaning with the target language. Objective of the Paper. This paper aims to identify, describe, and explain some problems of non-equivalence problem at word level and strategies dealing with it. Method. By using Baker’s theory (1992), the song lyric of both English and Indonesian version entitled Lead the Way (sung by Jhené Aiko) and Kita Bisa (sung by Via Vallen) are analyzed. Findings. The findings show that translation by omission is highly applied in translating the lyric followed by a varied occurrence of other strategies. Conclusion. The variation of the strategies is used in order to make a “singable” song. Finally, this paper provides suggestions that a study of the translation of song lyrics combining translation theory and interpersonal meaning of SFL for giving a better understanding is needed to be done for giving a broader understanding towards the text.

Abstract

This research would focus on studying of Jambi Malay Culture from the point of view baju kurung as the traditional clothing of Jambi Malay women. By using qualitative research methods with a historical approach, this study aimed to determine the history and meaning of the philosophical values of baju kurung with its development ethically and aesthetically as the traditional clothing of Jambi Malay women. The benefits of this research were expected to become an inventory of Jambi Malay culture in the scientific studies. In the background of the diversity of natural and cultural wealth owned by Jambi province, there were many kinds of values of beauty, philosophy and cultural ethical and aesthetic values, one of them was an aesthetics in clothing which was important part of traditional Jambi Malay women's clothing. Baju kurung as a symbol of Jambi Malay Muslimah women have a philosophical meaning that was closely related to traditional and Islamic customs. The entry of Islam in the land of Malay Jambi influenced the concept of dressing up in Jambi's Malay women. It can be concluded that baju kurung was a reflection of the identity of Muslimah women in Jambi, according to Islamic law, which is described in the seloko of custom Jambi "adat bersendi syara’, syara’ bersendi kitabullah. Syara’ mangato, adat memakai. " The seloko of custom Jambi has become a philosophical value in the art of dressing Jambi Malay women which has the uniqueness of ethical and aesthetic values without reducing the elegance of Jambi Malay women.
