Abstract

Novel is a kind of literacy work that contains of sentences. Every sentences has grammatical and lexical devices in sentences or text that is called cohesive devices. This study aims at to know the types of cohesive devices in novel written by an Indonesian popular writer, Andrea Hirata. The title of the novelis Laskar Pelangi, that novel has been translated into English entitled “The Rainbow Troops”. This Study analyze English version of this novel. The method to analyze is descriptive qualitativee. The data of this study are all sentences that contain of cohesive devices in chapter 30 of this novel. The result of this study show that, all types of grammatical and lexical devices exist in chapter 30. Where, grammatical devices is the mostly used in this chapter. Reference devices are the mostly used than the two grammatical, substitution and conjunction. Personal reference is a type of reference devices. It can be proved base on discussion of this research, give the fact that reference device is a criteria of child literature, in this case is Andrea Hirata’s The Rainbow Troops novel talk about children and their childhood. From the previous study also concluded that, children writing also have reference devices as the most frequently used in their writing about literature.

Abstract

In the study of language, what people do by saying something is called speech acts. Speech acts is not only found in everyday life but also in the film. This research concerns with speech acts produced by the main character in Shrek movie script. The aims of this research are to describe the types of speech acts are produced by the characters in animated of western movie entitled “Tangled”. Data of this research in the form of utterances that involved illocutionary acts used by each character in that movie which is taken from YouTube then classify them into categories of illocutionary acts based on Searle’s of theory.  The types of research in this study are qualitative and quantitative research. Qualitative research is applied to analyze the data in the form of the text. Quantitative research is used to count the member of speech acts used by the characters in that movie to conclude which types of speech acts is dominantly used. Based on data analysis, found that there are four of illocutionary acts found in that movie; directives, representatives, expressives, and commissives. This study shows that the dominant speech acts used is directives which 44% of percentage. It indicates that the characters of the movie “Tangled” use directives because some of them want the other character to do something.

Abstract

Figurative language is the use of words that make a reader have to make a good interpretation not only by seeing what the words refer to or what it is said on the text, but also by interpreting it from the context. Because of that, it can create a misinterpretation. The researcher used a descriptive method because the data were taken from the advertisements as documentation method. The data were collected by downloading the data, reading them repeatedly, identifying the data that consist of the figure of speech and putting them on table provided. The data were also analyzed by tabulating the data, categorizing the figurative language into different forms, interpreting the meaning, classifying them into different types of figurative language, and analyzing them based on theory of semantics, and language and gender so that misinterpretation cannot create. The results in this research are 3 types of figurative language found in product advertisements for different genders such as personification, simile, and hyperbole, and some differences of language between both genders such as the choice were of word, the vocabulary and the most significat types of figurative language which used by them.

Abstract

Word-formation is the study of words, dealing with the construction or formation rules of words in a certain language. This research paper is aimed to investigate word formation process used in “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” novel by Lewis Carroll and “Alice in Wonderland” movie by Walt Disney. This research paper uses O’Grady (1997) and Yule (2010) theories about word formation process. This study used qualitative approach with descriptive method. The writer found affixation as the dominant type used to form the words in the novel that occurred in 286 data or about 48,89%, and 15 data or about 30,61% cliticization as the dominant type to form the words in the movie script.

Abstract

The focus of this research was to find the unfamiliar words of Minangkabaunese in classic Minangkabaunese Advices of “Pitaruah Ayah” by Angku Yus Dt. Parpatiah. The purposes of this research are: (1) To find the unfamiliar words for Minangkabaunese young generations in classic Minangkabaunese advices entitled “Pitaruah Ayah”by Angku Yus Dt. Parpatiah (2) To find the meaning of the unfamiliar words (3) To find the class of words of the unfamiliar words. This research was concern to find the current status of several words in Minangkabaunese which possible to become unfamiliar for its young generations through sampling processes in the district of Nanggalo Kota Padang. From the research 88 unfamiliar words of Miangkabauese were found in classic Minangkabaunese Advices of “Pitaruah Ayah” by Angku Yus Dt. Parpatiah. The most dominant class of words of the unfamiliar words of Minangkabaunese is noun amounted 40.9% of the data. And 48 % of the unfamiliar words were not found in the dictionaries of Minangkabaunese to Indonesian language. Several factors influence the occurrence of the unfamiliar words  such as (1) language change of Minangkabaunese (2) The language interference of Indonesian language.

Abstract

ABSTRAK             Bahasa adalah salah satu bagian penting di kehidupan sosial. Apa yang manusia lakukan dengan ucapan disebut tindak tutur. Penelitian ini berfokus pada tindak tutur dari film Frozen. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi tindak tutur dalam film Frozen. Data analisis didasarkan pada teori-teori tindak tutur yang terdapat pada film. Data dari penelitian ini adalah ungkapan-ungkapan yang mengandung tindak tutur (suggesting, asking, requesting, dan stating). Sumber data dari penelitian ini adalah transkrip film Frozen. Dalam menganalisa data, penulis mengelompokkan data ke tipe tertentu berdasarkan teori Levinson (1983) tentang tipe-tipe tindak tutur. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa ada 33 data. Peneliti menemukan 4 klasifikasi dari tindak tutur  direktif dalam bahasa inggris. (1) 37 data dikategorikan Asking,  (2) 66 data dikategorikan Requesting, (3) 6 data dikategorikan Suggesting, dan (4) 29 data dikategorikan Stating.

Abstract

 The purpose of this research is to analyze  linguistic features of political language used by candidates of governor and deputy governor of’ Jakarta in election campaign debate 2017. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. Data of this research are the transcription of debate between three couples of candidates that happens during election campaign debate. The duration of  debates is six hours, which is each of debate has six segments with different time. This data were analyzed based on Beard (2000) theory about linguistic features to persuade and influence citizens for supporting them in election. There are some lingusitc features were found in this research; they are metaphor, analogy, repetition and antithesis. The result of this study showed that not all of utterances used linguistic features. The data from debates are 41 datum. The first candidate (AHY) used 5 metaphor (56%), 3 repetition (33%), and 1 antithesis (11%). The second candidate (AHK) used 3 metaphor (23%), 4 analogy (31%), 4 repetition (31%) and 2 antithesis (15%). While the third candidate (ANS) used 1 metaphor (5%), 2 analogy (26%), 10 repetition (53%), 2 antithesis (16%). From the result of the study were known that the most widely linguistic feature used is repetition 17 times (41%).

Abstract

The purpose of this analysis are to expose the issue about criminal jurisdiction which is done by Soviet Government and to know the contribution of the implied author in revealing criminal jurisdiction. This analysis is related to the concept of power by Michel Foucault that is supported by the text and context based interpretation. The result of this analysis shows the Soviet Government commits the criminal jurisdiction  that can be seen from hiding the truth and ignoring the cictims of nuclear explosion.
