Abstract

This research aims to analyze multimodal in Samsung Galaxy S9 audiovisual advertisement. The systemic functional linguistics theory by Halliday, multimodal theory by Kress and van Leeuwen and generic structure analysis theory by Cheong were applied to analyze this research. The method used in this research was a descriptive research method. The data in this research were images, texts, symbols, sounds, and gestures used in Samsung Galaxy S9 advertisement video. The source data of this research was obtained from Samsung Youtube account. The finding of this research obtained that all semiotic systems in Samsung Galaxy S9 are in harmony and complete each other. The analysis also shows that there are five generic structures found in this advertisement video; lead, display, announcement, emblem, call and visit. Meanwhile, the other structures (tag and enhancer) are not found in this advertisement.

Abstract

This article is about the analysis of novel Age of Ambition Chasing: Fortune, Truth and Faith in the New China (2014) by Evan Osnos that focuses on how the main character does the resistance toward the government. The problem in this analysis how far the main character in the novel exposes the issue about defiance. The aim of this analysis is to find out how far Evan Osnos’ novel Age of Ambition Chasing: Fortune, Truth, and Faith in the New China brings up and reveal the issue of defiance which is done by the main character in this novel. This analysis involved the fictional devices that are plot (conflict) and setting to support the issue of defiance. This analysis deals with the concept of power by Michel Foucault.

Abstract

The study deals with violating maxims by the sellers and the buyers in traditional markets of Pasar Raya and Lubuk Alung. The objectives of the study are to find out how sellers and buyers do violation maxims in their transactions in traditional market Pasar Raya and Lubuk Alung and to identify the differences and similarities of violation of  maxims between traditional market Pasar Raya Padang and Lubuk Alung. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were the utterances between sellers and buyers from 21 conversations each traditional market. The data were collected by recording the conversations. There were 108 utterances that violated the maxims used by sellers and buyers traditional market Pasar Raya while in traditional market Lubuk Alung there were 106 utterances that violated maxims used by sellers and buyers. The implications of violating maxims that used by sellers and buyers were to show closeness and become the part of their purpose how they do transaction each other, how they attract the customers, and how they get a deal in bargaining transaction.

Abstract

Tawa tasapo is one of the examples of oral tradition that persists in traditional medicine in Solok Regency. This research aimed to see linguistics meaning of language in tawa tasapo. The analysis was done by the application of Leech theory of meaning that divide meaning into seven types of meaning: conceptual, connotative, social, affective, reflective, collocative, and thematic meaning. This research used descriptive-qualitative method with simple mathematic to determine the finding of this research. After analyzing the data, it was found that connotative meaning and social meaning as the dominant used in this research. The result was influenced by Minangkabau and Islam culture.

Abstract

Social dialect is a branch of dialectology discusses about different language used because of social socio-economic background and educational background. From those background differences, it turns out to cause linguistic phenomena in the use of language which is one of the symbols as a determinant of social status. Most researchers have studied about different language used due to social status that discussed the language variety, meanwhile in this research the different language used is discussed in three aspect such as different diction, different pronunciation and different suprasegmental (stress) between employees and labourers in Padang. The method used in this research is by provoking the informant to utter the words researcher intended by using interview guideline. The data are words that are explained in comparative description form. The result of this research is there are found 5 types of different diction, 3 types of different pronunciation with the same diction and 3 types of different stressed sound with the same diction used between employees and labourers in Padang.
