Abstract

AbstractWijaya, Eko. 2020. Ecological Apocalypse in the Three Poems: We Think We Are Less Foolish, Crossing A City Highway, and Epithalamia. Thesis. English Department. Faculty of Languages and Arts. Universitas Negeri Padang.            This thesis is the analysis of the three poems: We Think We Are Less Foolish, Crossing A City Highway, and Epithalamia. It explores the issue of ecological apocalypse which is done by people toward the nature. It is also intended to know the contribution of poetic elements: imagery, irony, and speaker in revealing the issue of ecological apocalypse. This analysis is related to the concept of eco-criticism by Garrard, McKusic, Barry, and Buell that is supported by the text-based and context-based interpretation. The result of this analysis shows about ecological apocalypse is a result of human intervention. They exploit and pollute the nature continuously just for their own advantages without concern about the sustainability of nature.Key words: apocalypse, human, nature, anthropocentrism, exploitation, pollution.

Abstract

This article is about the analysis of a novel Exit West (2017) by Mohsin Hamid. The problem of this analysis focuses on the issue of being at the crossroads of identity. The aim of analysis is to find out how far the characters Saeed and Nadia expose the issue of being at the crossroads of identity. This analysis involved fictional devices such as character, plot (conflict), and setting to reveal the issue of being at the crossroad of identity in the novel. The analysis deals with the concepts of hybridity by Homi K. Bhabha that is supported by the text and context based interpretation. The result of this analysis shows that the protagonists are a young man and a young woman who are faced with a condition that places them to be at their identity in being at the crossroads of identity. Thus, the character makes effort to assimilate and imitate to the new culture. These can be seen through their ways to blend with the society in attaining their identity.

Abstract

This research breaks down about sorts of ecolexicon in pantun of petatah petitih in Minangkabaunese wedding ceremony found in Lintau Buo sub-area. The point of this research is to discover the ecolexicon in the wedding ceremony and its connection to the biological condition of the locale. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The aftereffect of this exploration shows that the most widely recognized sort of ecolexicon discovered is biotic lexicon with flora 10 data, at that point fauna lexicon 7 data and the latter is abiotic lexicon which discovered 10 data. The outcome shows that all ecolexcion utilized in the petatah petitih of the wedding ceremony are additionally found in the ecological environment of the locale.

Abstract

AbstractThis thesis is an analysis of a novel written by Patricia McCormick entitled Sold (2006). This analysis looks at the gender discrimination that is experienced by women who are victims of gender discrimination acts. This analysis is related to the feminist approach and the concept of gender discrimination by Simone de Beauvoir. The analysis focuses on the issue of gender discrimination. The aim of this analysis is to what extent the character, conflict (plot), setting and stage direction contribute to reveal the issue of gender discrimination. This analysis also depends a lot on the narator to determine which parts of the novel are used as the data. The result of the study shows that Lakhsmi experienced gender discrimination such as marginalization, subordination, stereotype, violence and double burden.
