Abstract

Regional Head Elections (Pilkada) serve as a cornerstone of local democracy, reflecting citizens’ engagement beyond merely choosing leaders. This study examines the relationship between social conformity and political trust with political participation among Surabaya residents during the 2024 Pilkada. Using a quantitative correlational design, data were collected from 410 registered voters selected through judgmental sampling. Validated scales for political participation, social conformity, and political trust demonstrated satisfactory reliability (Cronbach’s alpha 0.761–0.921). Partial correlation analysis controlling for political trust showed that social conformity had a significant but low positive relationship with political participation (? = 0.265; p = 0.000). Meanwhile, when social conformity was controlled, political trust also exhibited a significant low positive correlation with political participation (? = 0.210; p = 0.000). Furthermore, multiple regression analysis with 5000-sample bootstrapping confirmed that both independent variables significantly and positively influence political participation, with political trust (B = 0.165; p = 0.000) contributing more strongly than social conformity (B = 0.122; p = 0.000). These findings highlight that while the effects are not dominant, psychosocial factors remain relevant drivers of civic engagement. The study enriches the understanding of urban political behavior in Indonesia and provides insights for designing strategies to enhance political participation through strengthening public trust and leveraging social dynamics.

Abstract

This study examines the limited representation of women from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) in the 2024 general election. As the party with the highest vote share and female leadership, PDI Perjuangan achieved only 24.5% female representation in the national parliament (DPR RI), falling short of the 30% quota mandated by Law No. 7 of 2017. This study aims to analyse the efforts and challenges the party faces in fulfilling the quota. A qualitative approach was used with a single case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, limited observation, document analysis, and literature review and analysed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. The findings indicate that the party has attempted to implement a feminising politics strategy, including rhetorical, promotional, and guarantee-based dimensions. However, its implementation remains suboptimal. Obstacles to rhetorical equality stem from the disconnection between discourse and institutional action. In terms of promotion, political education and cadre training have not been systematically linked to the nomination process. Regarding guarantees, internal quota policies are not supported by strategic placement mechanisms or sufficient logistical support. These findings suggest that the party's affirmative strategies have not been consistently and comprehensively institutionalised. This study concludes that weak implementation across the three strategic dimensions contributed to PDI Perjuangan’s failure to meet the women’s representation quota in the 2024 election

Abstract

This study analyzes the cash transfer assistance (BLT) policy in Tulungagung Regency through Esping-Andersen’s welfare state framework, focusing on decommodification, social rights, and social citizenship. Using a descriptive qualitative approach based on official documents, BPS data, and recent literature, the study finds that BLT reflects a residual and protective-selective welfare model with partial decommodification. The effectiveness of BLT is shaped by local governance capacity and the sustainability of regional funding. This study contributes by contextualizing welfare state theory within local decentralization.

Abstract

This study examines how local wisdom operates as a mechanism of political negotiation to reduce anarchic tendencies in protests in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The research focuses on the dynamics of demonstrations, a period marked by heightened student activism and public dissent in various Indonesian cities. Unlike other regions where protests often escalate into repressive or violent acts, Yogyakarta exhibits a distinctive pattern through a more dialogical and culturally grounded approach. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this study collected data through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis on protest dynamics and local governance practices. The findings reveal that local wisdom—embodied in the values of deliberation, social harmony, and the symbolic authority of the Sultanate—functions as a soft instrument of political negotiation among local authorities, student movements, and the broader community. This mechanism effectively mitigates conflict escalation and sustains peaceful demonstrations. This study contributes to the theory of hybrid governance by illustrating how cultural legitimacy operates as a subtle form of political negotiation within contemporary democratic practice

Abstract

This article examines the proliferation of conservative Islamic movements in Indonesia following the collapse of the New Order in 1998. Drawing on a qualitative approach grounded in comprehensive literature analysis, the study employs political opportunity structure theory to demonstrate how the Reformasi Era opened new institutional and discursive spaces for previously marginalized conservative Islamic groups to renegotiate their position within national politics. The resurgence of these movements materialized in three principal forms: the proliferation of Islamic political parties in the 1999 general elections; the revitalization of debates on the Jakarta Charter during the constitutional amendment process; and the expansion of Sharia-inspired regional regulations across a wide range of local governments. The article argues that decentralization under the Reformasi Era inadvertently created enabling political opportunities that facilitated the consolidation, institutionalization, and public expansion of conservative Islamic activism in post-authoritarian Indonesia
