Abstract

Blast disease (P. oryzae) is one of the main diseases in rice that can cause losses of up to 61% . This study aims to determine the effectiveness of infrared images in early detection of Pyricularia oryzae symptoms in rice seeds with a comparison of conventional methods and to determine the level of accuracy of infrared image analysis on the pathogenic fungus Pyricularia oryzae. This study was conducted from July to December 2025 at the Plant Health Laboratory I, Faculty of Agriculture, UPN "Veteran" East Java. This study used infrared images in detect the pathogen Pyricularia oryzae in rice plants; observations began with Image Acquisition, Image Preprocessing, Segmentation, Visualization, and Validation. The results showed that infection symptoms began to be detected on the 3rd day through pseudo-coloring images before the seeds showed visual symptoms conventionally, because the RGB image only showed color changes on the 4th to 5th day. Validation using regression analysis showed a strong relationship between the results of image estimation and direct observation in the laboratory. The regression model obtained is y = 0.7468x + 0.0845 with an R² value of 0.7033, which means that 70.33% of the variation in observation results can be explained by the image estimation results. The analysis in this study has the potential to be an early detection method because it can detect Pyricularia oryzae fungus on rice seeds with the percentage of symptoms obtained through image processing in the range of 30–52% and is more accurate than manual observation.

Abstract

Dendrobium orchids are horticultural commodities with high market interest, so they are widely cultivated. The study aims to determine the composition of the best concentration of NAA and Kinetin growth regulators in MS planting medium for the organogenesis of Dendrobium orchid plantlets. This study was conducted with 2 (two) factors and repeated 4 times, which was compiled in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The first factor is the NAA concentration treatment (2, 3, and 4 ppm), while the second factor is the concentration of Kinetin (1, 2, and 3 ppm). The results showed that the combination of NAA concentration treatment of 4 ppm and Kinetin 1 ppm in MS planting medium produced the best root wet weight and root length and was significantly different from other treatment combinations. Therefore, the composition of NAA concentration of 4 ppm and Kinetin 1 ppm can be recommended as the best combination in increasing plantlet root growth.

Abstract

Wonosalam Village is an area with diverse agricultural land use and intensive cultivation activities that have the potential to decrease in soil fertility, while the latest data on soil fertility levels in this area are not yet available. This study aims to assess the soil fertility index (SFI) across various land uses and identify key indicators influencing soil fertility in Wonosalam Village. Soil samples were selected from five land uses. These were mixed gardens, snake fruit gardens, coffee gardens, rice fields, and dry fields, at a depth of 0–60 cm using the purposive method of random sampling. Analysis was conducted on pH, organic C, total N, available P, exchangeable K, CEC, base saturation, and extra Al. The results showed a significant relationship between indicators, such as pH with available P (r = 0.586) and KB (r = 0.940), organic C with total N (r = 0.714), and extra Al with KB (r = –0.740). The SFI value was in the medium category (0.53–0.65), except for one dryland point, which was classified as low. The strength of this study lies in providing baseline data on index-based soil fertility across various land uses, a previously underreported area in the Wonosalam region. These results indicate that soil fertility remains moderate but is vulnerable to decline due to intensive land management. Therefore, this study recommends the implementation of sustainable soil management, particularly increasing organic matter and proper fertilizer management, as a reference for farmers and policymakers in Wonosalam Village.

Abstract

Durian (Durio zibethinus Murr.) is a high-value tropical fruit commodity with strong development potential in humid tropical regions such as Wonosalam Village, Wonosalam District, Jombang Regency, East Java. However, durian productivity is highly dependent on land suitability in relation to crop growth requirements. This study aimed to evaluate actual land suitability for durian cultivation based on soil biophysical characteristics. Land evaluation was conducted using the matching method by comparing field and laboratory soil data with durian suitability criteria proposed by Ritung et al. (2011). Observed parameters include temperature, rainfall, humidity, drainage, soil texture, coarse fragments, effective soil depth, base saturation, cation exchange capacity, soil pH, organic carbon, available nutrients nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, slope, erosion hazard, flood hazard, surface rock, and rock outcrops. The results showed that actual land suitability classes ranged from S2 moderately suitable to S3 marginally suitable. The dominant limiting factors were suboptimal drainage, low nitrogen and potassium availability, and slope-related erosion risk in several land units. The main strength of this study lies in its integrated assessment combining soil properties with farmer land management practices, providing a realistic depiction of durian cultivation potential under current conditions. The findings offer a basis for land use planning and site selection for durian development. It is recommended that farmers and local stakeholders apply integrated soil management practices including drainage improvement, balanced fertilization, liming, and soil conservation measures to reduce limiting factors. These recommendations are expected to improve land suitability, increase durian productivity, and support sustainable land management.

Abstract

To overcome the limitations of ultisol soils and the increasing demand for high-quality oil palm seedlings, this study evaluates a combination of humic acid and mycorrhizal biofertilizer applications with reduced NPK fertilization at the main nursery stage to increase nutrient availability and support more efficient and sustainable nursery management on marginal soils. The experiment was conducted in the Agricultural Field of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra using a Non-Factorial Randomized Design, consisting of mycorrhiza + humic acid), F (3/4 standard NPK + mycorrhiza + humic acid), and G (standard NPK + mycorrhiza + humic acid). The results showed that the combined application of mycorrhizal biofertilizer and humic acid significantly improved the growth of oil palm seedlings at the main nursery stage. The best growth performance was observed in treatment E (1/2 standard NPK + mycorrhiza + humic acid), as indicated by increased plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter, and both fresh and dry weights. In addition, treatments E (1/2 standard NPK + mycorrhiza + humic acid) and F (3/4 standard NPK + mycorrhiza + humic acid) improved phosphorus uptake and its efficiency, with values comparable to the standard NPK treatment (B), while also increasing root colonization, with the highest levels observed in these treatments.

Abstract

Root health disorders are among the primary constraints in hydroponic lettuce cultivation, especially under conditions of suboptimal aeration, high temperatures, and fluctuating humidity. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is commonly used to increase dissolved oxygen availability, suppress certain pathogens, and promote root health. This study aimed to evaluate the response of four lettuce varieties grown in a Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) hydroponic system with the application of 3% H2O2 and to identify the variety with the best agronomic performance. The research was conducted from October to December 2023 at Kebun Sayur 24 Hidroponik, Bojongsari Village, Alian District, Kebumen Regency. The experiment was arranged in a nonfactorial completely randomized design with four varieties—RZ Junction, Romaine, Mondai, and Rex—each replicated six times. The observed variables included plant height, root length, number of leaves, fresh plant weight, dry plant weight, fresh root weight, dry root weight, and leaf area at harvest, 45 days after sowing. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance followed by the 5% Honestly Significant Difference test. The results showed that varietal differences had a highly significant effect on plant height, number of leaves, dry plant weight, fresh root weight, dry root weight, and leaf area, but had no significant effect on root length and fresh plant weight. Romaine showed the best performance in plant height (14.37 cm), fresh root weight (9.17 g), dry root weight (0.66 g), and leaf area (671 cm²), whereas Rex produced the highest number of leaves (15.50). Therefore, Romaine was the most promising variety for NFT hydroponic lettuce cultivation under 3% H2O2 application.

Abstract

Soybean productivity in Indonesia remains low, necessitating environmentally friendly innovations such as magnetic field induction to enhance plant physiological performance and support national food security. Therefore, this study focuses on the effects of a 0.3 mT MF with exposure durations of 0, 10, 20, and 30 minutes on the stomatal index and chlorophyll content, as well as the relationship between the two, in the Denasa 1 soybean variety. This study employed a completely randomized design (CRD) with four treatments and four replicates. Stomatal measurements were taken 30 days after planting using the replica method and a light microscope, while chlorophyll content was analyzed using the Arnon spectrophotometric method. The results showed that a 0.3 mT magnetic field significantly increased the stomatal index, with the highest value observed at a duration of 30 minutes; however, it did not affect the chlorophyll a, b, or total content. These findings indicate that the magnetic field is more responsive to leaf anatomical morphology than to chlorophyll biosynthesis, suggesting that the plant’s physiological response is specific to certain parameters. The key advantage of this finding is that magnetic field treatment can selectively modify stomatal characteristics without affecting chlorophyll content, making it a targeted, chemical-free, and environmentally friendly technology for enhancing plant adaptation. Farmers, seed producers, and agricultural practitioners are recommended to consider exposing seeds to a 0.3 mT magnetic field for 30 minutes before planting as a sustainable seed treatment method. Further research is needed to evaluate its effects on photosynthetic performance, environmental stress tolerance, and field yield productivity.

Abstract

The increasing demand for pakcoy (Brassica rapa L.) and limited land availability necessitate efficient cultivation techniques such as the wick hydroponic system. This study aimed to determine the effects of different growing media types, concentrations of Liquid Organic Fertilizer (LOF) derived from banana peel, and their interaction on the growth and yield of pakcoy. The experiment was conducted from January to February 2026 using a factorial completely randomized design (CRD) with two factors: growing media (rockwool, hydroton, cocopeat, and rice husk charcoal) and LOF concentration (10, 15, and 20 ml/L), each with three replications, along with a standard AB Mix control treatment. Results showed no significant interaction between the two factors for all measured parameters. Rice husk charcoal consistently produced the best growth, with the highest total fresh weight (49.34 g), plant height (6.24 cm), number of leaves (14.52), canopy width (21.88 cm), and leaf area (58.13 cm²). The 10 ml/L LOF concentration resulted in the best growth compared to higher concentrations, acting as an effective biostimulant. Conversely, the 20 ml/L concentration suppressed growth, likely due to low pH and nutrient imbalance. The key advantage of this finding is the identification of a cost-efficient cultivation strategy that reduces reliance on commercial AB Mix by utilizing household waste. It is recommended that home-scale growers adopt a combination of rice husk charcoal as the growing medium and weekly foliar spraying of 10 ml/L banana peel LOF as a biostimulant supplement to a low-dose AB Mix to optimize pakcoy growth.

Abstract

This study was designed to analyze the effects of salinity stress on the vegetative growth and adaptation of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) seedlings of the DxP Socfindo LaMe variety during the pre-nursery phase. The experiment was conducted at the Laboratory and Greenhouse of the Indonesian Palm Oil Technology Institute from July to August 2025. Using a Randomized Block Design (RBD), three levels of salt concentration were tested: S0 (0 mmhos) as the control, S1 (NaCl 5–6 mmhos), and S2 (NaCl 6–7 mmhos), each with three replications. The parameters measured included plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, chlorophyll content, biomass weight, and root structure. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at the 5% significance level. The results indicated that salt exposure elicited varying growth responses in the seedlings. Significant effects were observed at 8 weeks after planting (WAP) for plant height, at 9 and 11 WAP for leaf number, and at 11 WAP for chlorophyll concentration. Biomass and root system parameters exhibited significant to highly significant sensitivity. Interestingly, the S2 treatment (highest salt concentration) yielded the most optimal results for the majority of variables. These findings confirm that Socfindo LaMe DxP seedlings possess considerable tolerance to certain saline conditions, providing valuable insights for the plantation industry in utilizing marginal lands.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the morphological and physiological responses of coconut oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) variety DxP PPKS Simalungun seeds to salinity stress during the pre-nursery phase. High-quality seeds are crucial for the successful growth and productivity of coconut oil palm plants in the field. The experiment employed a randomized group design with three salinity levels: no salinity, moderate salinity, and high salinity. Each treatment was repeated three times, with 10 seeds per repetition. Observed variables included plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, chlorophyll content, root length, shoot length, fresh weight, volume, and dry weight of the plants. Data were analyzed using various methods of analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Duncan's multiple range test (DMRT) at a 5% significance level when significant effects were detected. The results showed that moderate salinity induced the best growth response, particularly in stem diameter from week 2 to week 8, as well as in the fresh weight of roots and shoots. Plant height was superior under non-saline conditions only during the third week, while the number of leaves and chlorophyll content showed no significant differences. This study indicates that DxP PPKS Simalungun coconut oil palm seeds possess good tolerance to salinity stress during the pre-nursery phase.
