Abstract

This study was descriptive design because the writer only wanted to describe about the discipline that was used by the lecturer in the classroom. The numbers of lecturers who were as the sample of this study were two English lecturers who were teaching Grammar II subject at STKIP PGRI WEST SUMATERA. Padang, so the writer took them all as the sample through total sampling technique. To find the data in this study, the writer used some instruments which are observation checklist, video and field note. The process in taking the data which was started from coming into the classroom observed the lecturer. The writer recorded the lecturer in two meetings for each lecturer. Then writer checked the data by using observation checklist and field note.  Thus, the result of this study was all of lecturers used positive discipline in managing the classroom. Those, the lecturers used thirteen types activities of positive discipline which can be classified as following: the first type was showing a positive attitude. The lecturers show a positive attitude which was applied by two English lecturers. There were lecturer A, and B. Second, the lecturers show interest. The lecturer show interest was applied by all of the lecturers. Third, the lecturer focused on positive thinking. Fourth, the lecturer used supportive tone of voice. Fifth, they showed a sense of humour. Sixth, they listened to the students talk and taking them seriously. Seventh, acting tough the students enjoy with their jobs, it was used by all the lecturers. Eighth, used appropriate body language; it was applied by all of the lecturers. Ninth, they lowered body position. Tenth, the lecturers listened their students before judging. Eleventh, the lecturers were consistent in giving punishment and rules. Twelfth, the lecturer A separated the behaviour from the students. Thirteenth, respect diversity was applied by all the lecturers

Abstract

Workshop of English Radio Broadcasting is one of the subjects provided by English Department, State Polytechnics of Padang. The instructional design or syllabus of this subject is designed by English lecturers and continued by coloborating it with professional broadcasters from radio stations. In order to produce skillful  students in English Radio Broadcasting,  it is the duty  for the lecturers to make sure wheather the objective  in the instructional design has been achieved or not. Therefore, this descriptive qualitative and descriptive quantitative research is conducted to find the result. The data of the research which is applied in odd semester of academic period 2015-2016 is collected through observing the class activities and from the students Mid Test and Final Semester Test. The observation is supported by some instruments. After getting all the data, the instructional design is elaborated into checklist note. The data is then being assessed by professional radio broadcaster through intrerview. At last, the data is analyzed qualitatively. The result is most of the students have fulfilled  to be a  radio broadcaster, but they are not in the level of professional. It can be caused of lack practicing and it has to be delivered in English. However, these activities are a good media for students to practice their English especially for writing and speaking skills

Abstract

Consciousness is a very important aspect in the teaching and learning of Grammar in EFL Classroom.It makes students become aware not only on the form or the  language pattern, but also on the meaning and the way to use it.  For this case, this research aims to describe the use of role play as a communicative task for encouraging students’ consciousness in learning grammar. The research was done in grammar class B of 2016-2017 that consisted 35 students as the participants of this research.  The researcher did observation and interview to collect the relevant data to give the better supports in finding out what had been stated in the research’s purpose.  The finding of this research showed that role play enabled the students to study grammar communicatively.  In this case, the students  became conscious to create many sentences based on the given topic and context and then use those sentences in their role-play. In other word, the students gained both grammar competence and communicative competence. Also, the researcher found that the students showed positive attitudes during the teaching and learning grammar process by using role play.

Abstract

This research is aimed to find out the students’ reading ability in comprehending the text at the second years of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. The population of the research was 76 students. The researcher used total sampling population and took all population as the sample. In collecting data, the researcher used classroom test. Test is used to find out the students’ reading ability. Students’ reading ability is categorized into very good, good, enough, less, and failed. Based on the result of the research, It can be seen that mean score of students’ reading abilityscore is 63.2. It is enough level, so it can be concluded that the students’ reading ability is enough or sufficient

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to solve the students’ problem in studying speaking English in classroom. It was found that the students have lack of ability in speaking English in the classroom. The problems were assumed derive from uninteresting techniques and monotonous activities done by the teacher when teaching and learning process was going on. To solve the problems above the teacher taught the students speaking through simulation. Because by using simulation the teacher could create various activities that given to the students. It could attract the students’ attention and interest when studying in the classroom and increase students’ speaking ability. This research was action research. The participants of this research were all of the students in Informatika Komputer B (IK.B) at Dynasty Computer Solok. The instruments to collect data were speaking test through interview and field note. Based on those instruments, it was found that studying speaking through simulation could increase students’ speaking ability. Shortly, the students’ speaking ability increased when they studied by using simulation

Abstract

This research aimed to find out English Department students’ intrinsic learning motive in studying Grammar.  Students could not apply correct Grammar in speaking and writing, many students repeated grammar subject, and remedial teaching was conducted.  Those problems indicate that students have problems concerning about their motive in studying Grammar.  This research is a composite of quantitative and qualitative research by using explanatory sequential design”. The participants of the research were all students of FKIP, Bung Hatta Univeristy. The instruments to collect the data were questionnaire, interview, and observation.  The technique of data analysis was initiated by calculating the mean of each questionnaire items as the quantitative data.  Qualitative data analysis wasgained from the result of the interview and observation.  The result gained from the quantitative and qualitative data analysis was interpreted, and research finding was gained. The finding of the research shows that the tendency of students’ intrinsic learning motives are for utilizing Grammar knowledge in order to get a good job and gaining score compared to the motives of gaining Grammar knowledge and developing Grammar knowledge
