Abstract

This research aimed to find out English Department students’ intrinsic learning motive in studying Grammar.  Students could not apply correct Grammar in speaking and writing, many students repeated grammar subject, and remedial teaching was conducted.  Those problems indicate that students have problems concerning about their motive in studying Grammar.  This research is a composite of quantitative and qualitative research by using explanatory sequential design”. The participants of the research were all students of FKIP, Bung Hatta Univeristy. The instruments to collect the data were questionnaire, interview, and observation.  The technique of data analysis was initiated by calculating the mean of each questionnaire items as the quantitative data.  Qualitative data analysis wasgained from the result of the interview and observation.  The result gained from the quantitative and qualitative data analysis was interpreted, and research finding was gained. The finding of the research shows that the tendency of students’ intrinsic learning motives are for utilizing Grammar knowledge in order to get a good job and gaining score compared to the motives of gaining Grammar knowledge and developing Grammar knowledge

Abstract

This research is conducted because the researcher found some problems at the eleventh grade students at SMAN 1 Padang Gelugur in writing. The first problem was some of the students felt reluctant to write in English. The second problem was some of the students had limited vocabulary. And the last problem was some of the students still had difficulties to understand the correct form of using noun phrase. This study aimed to find out the level achivement of students’ ability in writing using noun phrase on descriptive text. The design of this research was descriptive quantitative. The population of this research were the eleventh grade students that consist of 111 students. The students were divided into four classes. The number of samples of this research were 27 students. The researcher used purposive sampling technique to determine the sample, because the researcher had some considerations, the reason were: it is because the students have already learned about noun phrase on descriptive text. Then some of the students did not have a good writing noun phrase on descriptive text. To collect the data, the researcher used writing test. There were 3 indicators of noun phrase. They were head, premodifier and postmodifier. Based on the result of the research, it was found that 54,5% of the students had written noun phrase in ‘head’ correctly. Then it was found that 53,6% of the students had written noun phrase in ‘premodifier’ correctly. And it was found 53,5% of the students had written noun phrase in ‘postmodifier’ correctly. In conclusion, the students ability in writing using noun phrase based on those three indicators above was 54% which mean the students ability was in fair level. Therefore, based on the result that has been obtained by the researcher, it is concluded that the students still have difficulties using correct form of noun phrase in writing.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out the problems faced by the English Department students of Bung Hatta University in studying grammar. Some of the problems in grammar are; the students repeated grammar subject for several times, most of the students did the remedial teaching because they did not fulfill the requirement of the score given by the university. This research is a descriptive quantitative study with the all the English department students as the population. The researcher took stratified proportional sampling in determining the sample. The students were given the questionnaire to find out what are their problems in studying grammar. And to find out more information about students problems, the researcher also did an interview with the grammar lecturer. In understanding grammar materials, students had problems in terms of copying some parts of compulsory grammar book, owning additional grammar book to support their compulsory grammar book, problem in mastering too much material, many time allocated was very limited. In relation to the problems in understanding teachers’ presentation, teacher explains the materials too fast, problem in understanding the language used by the teacher, the media used by teacher. And problem in asking questions when they do not understand teachers’ explanation. Related to the problems of reviewing grammar lesson, the students had problems in terms of reviewing lesson at home. They also had problem in applying grammar rules to communicate outside the class. And students became frustrated when they are failed in grammar subject.

Abstract

This research has been done because the researcher found some problems in speaking at the tenth grade at SMAN 2 Lubuk Sikaping. The first problem was the students nervous when they were asked to speak up. The second problem was the students had lack of confidence. The third problem was the students had a felt panic when their teacher gave test. The last problem was the students felt afraid the teacher inform the score of the meeting. This study aimed to find out the speaking anxiety level at tenth grade SMAN 2 Lubuk Sikaping.The design of this research was a descriptive quantitative research.The population of this research were tenth grade students that consist of 134 students. The students were divided into four classes.The researcher took 25 % of the population by using random sampling technique to determine the sample because the population is more than one hundred students and there are 34 students of this research. To collect the data, researcher used questionnaire to find out speaking anxiety level of the students.The result researcher found the data there were 3 components of speaking anxiety. The consist of communication apprehension, test anxiety and fear of negative evaluation. It was found that 89 total score of the students had moderately low anxiety level in communication apprehension. Then 94 total score of the students had moderate anxiety level in test anxiety. The last result found that 88 total score of the students had moderately low anxiety level in fear of negative evaluation. In conclusion, the students speaking anxiety level at the tenth grade at SMAN 2 Lubuk Sikaping based on those three components above was 90 total score which mean the students anxiety level in speaking was in moderate level.

Abstract

Knowledge of pragmatic has been crucial element to the students English Department. The main focus of the research to find out the level of students pragmatic awareness by using percentage, the research was due to the problem found some students still used inappropriate respond to the pragmatic situation. The design of this research was a descriptive quantitative research in which the sample was taking by using random sampling technique with 25 samples at IAIN Bukittinggi of English Department. Additionally, the analyzing of the data was done by Written Discourse Completion Test (WDCT) test which is consist of 17 situation, made the description about the students pragmatic awareness in comprehending written discourse, analyzing the data using percentage, describe the data, found the level and making conclusion. The result showed that students pragmatic awareness in comprehending term in deixis is 61% it means the level is good. In performing term of speech act is 79% it means the level is good. Moreover, in understanding maxim is 62% it means the level is good. All of the students pragmatic awareness in comprehending written discourse is 67% it means the pragmatic awareness in comprehending written discourse of English Department of IAIN Bukittinggi is good. The implication of this study to know the level of pragmatic awareness in written discourse of English Department of IAIN Bukittinggi.

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to find out what students’ learning styles and teachers’ teaching styles at MTsN 02 Bukittinggi and to find out what are the matches or mismatches between students’ learning styles and teachers’ teaching styles at MTsN 02 Bukittinggi. The design of this research was combining both quantitative and qualitative research. The population of this research was grade VIII at MTsN 02 Bukittinggi. The sample was collected from two classes with a total number of students was 78 students and two different English teachers who taught in both classes. The instrument of this research was questionnaire and interview. The result showed that both classes had the same dominant learning style. In class VIII.6, there were dependent, participant, and collaborative learning styles. Meanwhile, in class VIII.7, the dominant learning styles was collaborative, participant and dependent learning style. While the teachers also had the same dominant teaching styles which were expert, formal authority, and personal model teaching style. Based on the theory of Grasha (2002) about the relationship of learning and teaching style, the researcher found that there was a match between learning styles and teaching styles at MTsN 02 Bukittingg and it was in cluster 2.

Abstract

This research was to find out the students' perception of the use of podcasts in teaching listening. The research was due to problems found in the field; some of the students were not interested in listening, students have difficulty catching the speakers' ideas, the perception of students toward podcast is different. The design of this research was descriptive research with a quantitative approach as the method of the research. The sample was collected from 26 students at SMK Pembangunan Bukittinggi which used total sampling as the sampling technique of the research. The result revealed the mean score of students' perception of the use of podcasts in teaching listening was 63.06%. It showed that the students had a positive perception regarding the use of podcasts in teaching listening.

Abstract

This research aims to know students’ vocabulary acquisition influenced by playing online games. It wants to see the comparison of students’ vocabulary acquisition and the causes of similarities or differences in students who are addicted to playing online games with students who are not addicted. This type of research was causal-comparative by using mix method. The data were obtained through questionnaires, test, and interview. The population of this research of 117 students. To determine the sample, researchers used non-probability sampling, namely quota sampling. 73 students are addicted and not addicted. To analyze the data collected, researchers used the U-test by Mann Whitney using the SPSS 20 application with a significance of α = 0.05. With the provision of significance values> 0.05, accepted and is rejected, in this case, the researcher finds sig. (0.607> 0.05), it can be concluded that there are similarities between students who are addicted to not addicted. The occurrence of this equation is quite reasonable. Researchers used a questionnaire to group students who were addicted to playing online games. Then, a test was given to find out the comparison of students' vocabulary acquisition. After that, the data were analyzed using a U-test by Mann-Whitney. From the findings, it showed that there were similarities in students’ vocabulary acquisition between students who are addicted to playing games with students not addicted to playing games.

Abstract

The purpose of the research is to find out the Implementation of Task Based Language Teaching Procedure at the First Grade of Tourism Department in SMKN 2 Bukittinggi. This research was descriptive qualitative. The data were obtained through observation and interview. The observation was conducted in four meetings and informants of this research were the teacher who taught at the First Grade of Tourism Departments and some student. The data were analyzed by using flow model of Miles and Huberman in Sugiono. The finding reveals that Task Based Language Teaching Procedure in generally had implements by the teacher with process pre task, task, planning, report, analysis, and practice but the teacher did not apply yet all of Process. The teacher did not implement one of activities from task process that was walk around to monitor and to encourage students to communicate in the target language because in the class the teacher prefer walked around to monitor whether the students did the task or not. For the other process had implements by the teacher but not always implemented in every meeting depend on the topic of the learning.

Abstract

Abstrak Penelitian ini ditujukan untuk mengidentifikasi hubungan antara kesadaran metakognitif dan pemahaman membaca siswa kelas II SMK Negeri 2 Bukittinggi (SMK Negeri 2 Bukittinggi, Sumatera Barat, Indonesia). Desain penelitian ini adalah penelitian korelasional. Populasi penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas II SMK Negeri 2 Bukittinggi yang berjumlah 544 siswa dan sampel penelitian ini adalah 109 siswa yang dipilih secara acak dari 20% populasi. Hasil penelitian menemukan bahwa ada hubungan antara kesadaran metakognitif dan pemahaman membaca siswa kelas II SMK Negeri 2 Bukittinggi. Koefisien korelasi (rxy) sebesar 0,285 yang berarti korelasi rendah. Jika dibandingkan antara rxy dan rtabel didapatkan bahwa 0,285 > 0,05 yang berarti Ha diterima dan Ho ditolak. Disimpulkan bahwa kesadaran metakognitif memiliki korelasi positif terhadap pemahaman membaca siswa. Dengan demikian, jika siswa memiliki kesadaran metakognitif, pemahaman membaca mereka akan meningkat.Kata Kunci: Korelasi, Kesadaran Metakognitif, Pemahaman Membaca.AbstractThis research is aimed to identify correlation between students’ metacognitive awareness and reading comprehension of the second grade of SMK Negeri 2 Bukittinggi (State Vocational School 2 of Bukittinggi, West Sumatera, Indonesia). The design of this research was correlational research. The research population was all students at the second grade of SMK Negeri 2 Bukittinggi encompassing 544 students and the samples were 109 students who were selected randomly from 20% of the population. The research found that there was a correlation between students’ metacognitive awareness and reading comprehension at the second grade of SMK Negeri 2 Bukittinggi. The correlation coefficient (rxy) is 0,285 which means as low correlation. If it is compared between rxy and rtable, it was found that 0,285 > 0,05 which meant that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. It was concluded that metacognitive awareness had a positive correlation to students’ reading comprehension. Thus, if the students have metacognitive awareness, their reading comprehension will increase.Keywords: Correlation, Metacognitve Awareness, Reading Comprehension
