Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop a reliable and valid instrument to measure primary school students’ sexual and reproductive health (SRH) knowledge. The instrument measures primary school students’ knowledge in four domains: i) puberty; ii) human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) and sexually transmitted diseases; iii) prevention of child sexual abuse; and iv) reproduction and reproductive systems. All items in the instrument were reviewed and screened by experts before they were administered to 125 primary five students. The instrument’s dimensionality, fit statistics, hierarchical ordering of item difficulty, and item and person separation reliability were assessed using the rasch measurement model (RMM). The results showed that the instrument demonstrated unidimensionality, and the items exhibited a wide range of difficulty level. Misfitting items were removed from the questionnaire, and the remaining 36 items were retained. The RMM outputs showed good item’s reliability (.97) with high separation index (5.52). However, the person reliability (.79) and the person separation index (1.94) were slightly the recommended value. Overall, the results show that the developed instrument can be used with confidence to assess sexual and reproductive health (SRH) knowledge among primary school students in Malaysia.

Abstract

Smoking remains as a nation-wide health problem in Indonesia. Several measures had been conducted to motivate smoking cessation, among those is the use of pictorial health warnings (PHWs). PHWs have been implemented since 2014, and some of the pictures were revised in 2018. However, there was no evaluation regarding the effectivity to this date. This study compared the effectivity of the old and new versions of PHWs in promoting smoking cessation. This was a cross-sectional study conducted in one of the sub-districts in East Java, Indonesia, in February 2020. Study population were local villagers aged at least 18 years who visited the sub-district’s primary healthcare during the study period. Consecutive sampling was used as the sampling method. Respondents were interviewed using a pre-determined questionnaire. The old and new versions of PHWs were printed and showed to the respondent during the interview. Comparison between groups was analyzed using McNemar test. A total of 103 respondents participated in this study. More respondents agreed that the old version of PHWs was considered more effective to motivate smoking cessation as compared to the newer version (71.84% vs 64.08%), although the significance was marginal (p=0.077). Our study showed that both versions of PHWs were considered effective to promote smoking cessation. However, more respondents agreed that the old version of PHWs were more effective than the new PHWs. We recommend policymaker to conduct a field study to test the effectivity of the proposed PHWs before revising the legal regulation in the future.

Abstract

Massive vaccination is very important to end the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study determined the willingness to receive a COVID-19 vaccine by the university students of Bangladesh and identified their apprehension about the effectiveness and safety of COVID-19 vaccines. Students were invited to complete an online cross-sectional survey (April 3 to June 10, 2021) to explore the intention to receive a COVID-19 vaccine and other factors regarding the responsiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine. Among the 191 respondent students, 52.9% willingly agreed to receive a vaccine, where the remaining was either not decided yet (27.7%) or was not intended to get vaccinated (15.7%). The odd of getting a vaccine were only 1.15. About 83.2% of students were conscious about the severity of COVID-19 and many students responded that they are well-versed about vaccine activity (67.5%) and risk factors (66%). Among the approved vaccines, most students preferred the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine ChAdOx1 (38.7%) and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine BNT162b2 (34%). As some of the students still have lesser intent to accept vaccines, public health officials need to be more proactive to focus on vaccine safety and benefits to enhance vaccine coverage among university students of Bangladesh.

Abstract

Since satisfaction is a subjective matter, assessing satisfaction should begin from the individual perception of satisfaction. This study aimed to map the satisfaction indicators perceived by the patients as a foundation to develop instruments to assess health care satisfaction. The study adopted sequential exploratory design of mixed method approach. Thirty patients participated in the interviews and 300 patients for the survey. The thematic analysis identifies 159 items of satisfaction. The items were condensed into 34 indicators and distributed into the five components of the service quality (SERVQUAL) model. A survey containing the 34 indicators were developed to measure their validity and reliability. The Product moment test of validity shows the value of correlation table (rn-2; α=r298; 0.05)=0.095. The values correlation tables are >0.095, meaning the validity is achieved. The Cronbach alpha test shows that the values of all indicators are >0.6, reflecting the reliability of the satisfaction indicators. The study concluded there is variation of satisfaction indicators of health care compared to the established instruments and the identified indicators are valid and reliable.

Abstract

Though the most commonly known risk factor of cognitive impairment is advancing age, hypertension and diabetes are often associated with the acceleration of cognitive decline. This study aimed to identify the relationship of these conditions with cognitive impairment among Indonesian elderly. This study was conducted cross-sectionally using data from the fifth wave of Indonesia family life survey (IFLS5). Cognitive impairment was measured through the modified Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status instrument in IFLS5. Hypertension, diabetes, and control variables were obtained from the answers given by the survey respondents. The final model of the multivariate analysis revealed an interaction between chronic diseases and physical activity in affecting the risk of cognitive impairment. The odds of cognitive impairment in physically less active pre-elderly and elderly with only hypertension and only diabetes, compared to those with no history of illness, are 1.14 (95% CI=0.88–1.48) and 2.55 (95% CI=1.04–6.26) respectively. These results suggested that increasing physical activity can help to reduce the risk of cognitive impairment in elderly, as well as pre-elderly, with hypertension, diabetes, or both conditions. Further longitudinal studies are needed to clarify the causal relationship.

Abstract

Many countries' lockdown measures have been effective in halting the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, but there is rising worry about their negative effects on overall health and well-being, particularly among lecturer in the academe. This study aimed to assess the lockdown fatigue, personal resilience and coping appraisal involving 100 lecturers in Quirino State University-Diffun Campus. Four-likert scale questionnaires were adapted and used to gather data including the lockdown fatigue scale (LFS), brief resilience scale (BRS), and coping appraisal. Findings reveal that majority of the respondents are female, 31-40 years old, married, with an on-going Master’s Degree, with a permanent position in the university. The most prominent symptoms of fatigue, according to the respondents in this study, were worry, sadness, depression, tiredness or physical depletion, and anxiety. As to the personal resilience of lecturer, according to the findings, it is difficult for them to react quickly when anything negative occurs. As a result, efforts to reduce lockdown fatigue among lecturer must focus on developing their coping abilities, which will improve their mental and psychological well-being as well as their general health. A positive psychological intervention or program may be implemented to mitigate the negative effect brought by community lockdown.

Abstract

The study aimed to determine trend of Indonesian local food consumption and its association with body mass index (BMI) among female university students. It was cross-sectional study that involved 217 Indonesian female university students (18-25 years old) in April-May 2021 using conventional sampling by a self-administered online questionnaire in Malang City, East Java, Indonesia. Sociodemographic and dietary habits were collected along with body BMI data. Descriptive and Ordinal Logistic Regression were applied to analyze the data. The results showed the average BMI of 217 participants was 21.28+3.30 kg/m2. From 167 local Indonesian food that were identified, local cuisine with high carbohydrates and sugar such as fried noodles, meatballs, mixed vegetable soup, biscuits/pastry, fritters with topping, and iced milk tea with topping had a positive impact on overnutrition. Interestingly, chicken porridge had an inverse association with overnutrition. The ordinal regression results depicted the length of stay in study area had a significant association with BMI. However, meal frequency and snack time consumption also affected BMI. The preferred high-carbohydrate food is significantly associated with overnutrition (p<0.05). It is crucial to adjust nutritional education and people's food menu in reducing high-carbohydrate and sugar food to provide healthy food for university students.

Abstract

The prevalence of stunting in Indonesia is remaining high. Stunting is found to be more common in rural areas than in urban areas. This study aimed to determine the factors associated with stunting in rural areas. We conducted a case-controlled study in Public Health Center Jetis 1 Yogyakarta, Indonesia. We recruited 80 children with the purposive sampling technique. Data on birth weight and disease history were taken from their medical records. Data on consumption patterns of energy, protein, carbohydrate, and fat were collected through a nutritional survey. Different proportions were tested using the fisher test and the mean difference was tested using an independent t-test. The results showed that child stunting had lower energy and protein consumption levels than non-stunting children (p=0.000). Diarrheal infection, frequency, and duration of illness were more common in stunted than in non-stunted children (p<0.05). Consumption of protein and energy was associated with stunting (p<0.05). This research found differences in the incidence of infection, frequency, length of illness, and hospital stay between stunted and non-stunted children. There is a significant association between the consumption of protein and energy with stunted growth in children in rural public health children.

Abstract

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a menstrual cycle disorder that frequently appears in women. As a result of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) virus pandemic, the school from home program was implemented, which could affect physical activity and anxiety and therefore increase the incidence of PMS. This cross-sectional research analyzed the relationship between physical activity and anxiety with PMS in adolescents. The population was 221 adolescent girls in Surabaya, Indonesia. A consecutive sampling technique was used to select the 143 respondents. The independent variables were physical activity and anxiety while the dependent variable was PMS. The data was collected using a questionnaire and analyzed by the Spearman Rho test with a level of significance α<0.05. The results showed no significant correlation between physical activity and PMS among adolescents, however there was a significant correlation between anxiety and PMS in adolescents (p=0.000; r=0.463). Adolescents with anxiety have higher risk of PMS. The higher level of anxiety will be the more severe the symptoms of PMS.

Abstract

Vaccines are life-saving technology that has led to the eradication, containment, or control of infectious illnesses around the globe. Many factors affect the vaccine acceptability of an individual. Thus, this study was conducted to determine the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine acceptability and the willingness of the students, faculty and staff of Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology (NEUST) to get vaccinated. A descriptive study approach and total sampling were adopted. A questionnaire was constructed to collect data on the respondents' profile, their source of information and statements regarding their acceptability and willingness to get vaccinated by the COVID-19 vaccine. Informed consent and permission to conduct were acquired. Various statistical tools were used to analyze the data. The vaccine acceptability was generally high and most was willing to get vaccinated. Their primary source of information was from television and social media on the internet. Their willingness to get vaccinated was influenced by their age, gender and the group where they belong in the university. Although more respondents are willing to get vaccinated, some still do not want to get vaccinated. Therefore, health education campaigns and vaccine promotion should be conducted to improve vaccine acceptance during the roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccine.
