Abstract

Finland’s prime minister election result is out, impacting a huge shock in European politics. This study examines The Guardian's coverage of the Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin's loss in the recent election, utilizing Ruth Wodak's approach to Critical Discourse Analysis. The study aims to uncover underlying ideologies, power relations, and potential critiques in The Guardian's coverage. The article analyzes The Guardian's April 4th, 2023, publication titled "Why did Sanna Marin lose Finland's election?" and discusses the reasons behind Marin's defeat. The article frames Marin's loss as a "shock," suggesting potential flaws in the electoral system or an unfair outcome. The article discusses various factors that led to Marin's defeat, such as her approach to the economy, foreign policy, and immigration, highlighting their potential impact on voter behavior. Additionally, the article suggests that Marin's loss may indicate a shift towards more conservative values in Finnish society, highlighting a rise in anti-immigration sentiment and a focus on economic issues. The study also considers power relations in the coverage, highlighting the opposition's successful framing of Marin as an out-of-touch elite, which may have played a significant role in swaying voters. However, the study notes that this approach only examined a single source. Further research involving multiple media sources and a mixed investigative lens is necessary to understand discursive issues comprehensively. Keywords: Finland’s Election, Sanna Marin, Discourse Historical Approach, The Guardian

Abstract

A growing body of literature has discussed need analysis in a certain domain. The issue raised since English to Young Learners was important to support the process of language learning in the classroom. The present study was employed to investigate student's need analysis, especially for the teaching of English to young learners in the elementary school level. The data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and analyzing the documents of sample students. Questionnaires were distributed to 25 students of grade 5A and 5B, and interviews were conducted with an English teacher of grade 5 at an elementary school in Jakarta. The findings revealed that the students were expected to master language skills so that they could be more confident in reading and writing. Furthermore, they also have several preferable topics to be discussed in the learning process such as family and friends, foods, or meals. They prefer to have topics that could be related to their daily life and their background knowledge. Moreover, there are several factors that may hinder the teaching of reading and writing. The irrelevant topics to their daily life and interest, lack of vocabulary knowledge, and anxiety in writing were the factors that made them hard to read and write. Therefore, the development of class materials needed to be relevant to students' needs. Keywords: Need Analysis, English to Young Learners, Learning Materials

Abstract

Teacher identity is one of the essential aspects influencing the form and quality of educational processes. The present study examines the narratives of one of the writers, Devia, and an English teacher, Trisa, throughout their learning and teaching experiences and the process that were involved as they negotiated their identities as teachers. The data were collected from an autobiographical narrative of Devia as an English teacher, as well as intensive life-history interviews with Trisa. Analysis of the narratives and interview data led to four major themes: inspiring figures, teaching practicum experiences, becoming an English teacher, and pursuing a postgraduate study. The findings revealed that Devia’s and Trisa’s engagement in the practices and activities of learning and teaching shaped their teacher identity constructions. Keywords: narrative inquiry, teacher identity, teacher identity construction

Abstract

A movie is one of the beneficial teaching media. Its main function is for entertainment, but it is a good resource for language learning as well. The dialog in the movie provides material for learning language skills and language structure which can be learned for any element of language. In this research, the writer investigated the language structure focused on speech acts. The study aims to identify the types of speech acts delivered by the main actor in the Spider-man movie, which was used a learning material, along with their frequency. This research was conducted in descriptive qualitative method. The analysis of speech acts used Searle’s theory which divided speech acts into five classifications, commissive, declarative, directive, expressive, and representative. After analyzing, the writer found all types of speech acts in the conversations. Although, the amount utterances of each type are various. Directive (46%) is frequently used in the dialogue followed by expressive (30%) commissive (12%), declarative (6%), and representative (6%). Therefore, expressions such as command, order, request, thank, apology, etc., which are parts of the directive and expressive type, often appear in conversation, especially in action movies. Keywords: Speech act, learning material, movie

Abstract

The main goal of this research is to develop learning method which can improve the speaking skills of students at Management Program by implementing video recording tasks.  This research is Research and Development (RD) research employing the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) Model. The respondents in this study were 30 students who took part in English I subject of Management Program. The instruments used in this study were speaking evaluation sheet, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. The research data was obtained from their responses to the questionnaire given related to the use of video recording tasks to improve the English-speaking skills of the students at Management study program. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that using a task-based approach to video recording can effectively help students improving their speaking skills. This can be shown that fluency, vocabulary, grammatical structure and pronunciation have P value lower than 0,05, meaning that those variables significantly support the use of video recording task to improve students speaking skills. Besides, students express their pleasure and positive perception of the method. In conclusion, the use of task-based video recording methods can effectively help students improve their oral skills, not only for exams, but also for their real life and future needs.  Additionally, students express their pleasant and positive views on this method.   Keywords: English Language, Speaking Skill, Video Recording Task

Abstract

Writing is one of five skills in English subject, and it is also one of the communication tools in which students express their ideas, thoughts, and feelings. Unfortunately, writing is considered a difficult skill to master. That is why a tool is needed to be used in the teaching of writing. An electronic tool is one of the tools that can support the teacher in delivering the materials in a writing class. Among many electronic tools, PowToon is one of the tools that is suitable for teaching the skill. The web-based software presents the materials with animation features, such as cartoons and transition effects. This research is aimed at investigating the advantages and disadvantages of using PowToon in teaching descriptive text. The respondents were 10 students of a senior high school. The researcher used qualitative research with a narrative inquiry design. Documentation (reflective journal), questionnaires, and interviews were used as instruments for collecting the data. Based on the data collected, it can be seen that the advantages of PowToon as an electronic teaching tool made the learning process interesting, happy, fun, motivating, and understandable. However, the researcher found some disadvantages of this tool as the unclear sound produced by the tool. They could barely hear what the speaker was saying. In addition, the duration of the video was too short, so it made the speech fast and not catchable by the students. Keywords: Descriptive Text, Narrative Inquiry, PowToon, Writing Skill

Abstract

This best practice aims to find out teachers’ practice on the bottom-up approach in teaching listening to EFL students at the higher education level, to find out students’ perplexity on listening, and to find out students’ responses on the bottom-up approach in teaching listening. The bottom-up approach has been practiced due to students’ perplexity in figuring out some linguistic features such as short and long vowels, word linking, diverse English accents, diction, and many others which are not available in EFL students’ native language. Thus, the students frequently have perplexity in those aspects. This perplexity occurs due to linguistic features in English are being far different from the ones in the Indonesian language. This qualitative research employed one English teacher who is particularly in charge of teaching listening and ten freshman students. The finding revealed that a bottom-up approach to the freshman classes is given until they get used to it so that they can get well-prepared to have a top-down approach to listening and students’ responses indicate that they no longer have perplexity about listening to English native speakers. The conclusion showed that before teaching listening with a top-down approach, a bottom-up approach would be initially practiced. The Bottom-Up approach has been applied to prevent EFL students from perplexity in listening and they will be ready to face other techniques such as listening for gist, specific information, and detail. Keywords: bottom-up approach, teaching listening, EFL students’ perplexity
