Abstract

This research attempted to find out translation strategies applied by the fifth-semester students of English Education Study Program in translating English written texts into Indonesian. It was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative and quantitative approach. The subject of the research were 61 pieces of translation task collected from the lecturer into taught translation subject. Data of this research were collected from the students’ assignment about Explanation text given by the lecturer. . The data analysis was done by using translation techniques theory proposed by Suryawinata and Hariyanto (2003). The results of this research revealed that the use of each translation strategy varied in terms of frequency. The translation strategies used by the students from the most dominant to the least dominant respectively were as follows ; 1) Borrowing (56.61%); 2) Omission (29.41%); 3) Synonym (6.80%), 4) Addition (3.49%), 5) and Transposition (3.49%). The applications of reduction and expansion were not found. Among all the five translation strategies found in the students’ translation works, omission, synonym and borrowing were accurately applied. Furthermore, addition and transposition were not accurately and successfully applied by the students.

Abstract

This research aims in analyzing a song entitled “We are the World 25 for Haiti”. This song was first introduced by Michael Jackson in 1985 named “We are the World 1985” when he made collaboration with other musicians for USA for Africa (United Support of Artists for Africa). The single was intended as a charity single to raise funds for famine relief efforts in Ethiopia who have suffered political instability and disaster drought in 1984-1985. Then, this song was chosen to be used for collecting funds in rehabilitating Haiti after the enormous earthquake. This paper focuses on the composer’s attitudes, the social relation among the participants, the context of the situation, and the power relation in the discourse. Theories used in this research were based on Van Dijk (2004), and Martin and Rose (2013). The lyrics are taken as the object of the research. The data were initially analyzed based on Martin and Rose (2003). The findings showed that the all types of attitude were found, they were expressing feelings, judging people’s character, and appreciating things. But one parts of judging people’s character was not found in the song lyrics. The result of the study is hoped to be beneficial for readers to have a better understanding about the Critical Discourse Analysis

Abstract

This study was investigated the effects of Digital Guessing Games strategy on students?  speaking ability of Islamic Senior High School students as well as to find out their perceptions of using it. In doing so, the subjects consisted of 44 students who were in tenth grade. Then they were divided into two equal experimental and control groups randomly (N=22). This study used explanatory sequential mixed-method whereas pre-test and post-test were administrated to collect quantitative and questionnaire was given to collect qualitative data.The experimental group was taught speaking using DGG application, whereas the control group using conventional guessing game. Analyzing the data through the independent sample t-test revealed the effectiveness of DGG application, the experimental group out performed the control group of speaking narrative text. Furthermore, an Islamic Senior High School students in Tasikmalaya had a positive attitude toward utilization of DGG application.

Abstract

This study deals with online teaching by using ICT in teaching writing skill. This study aimed in investigating the activity of the teacher, the teacher’s perception, and students’ perception to the process of teaching online by means of slack application in students writing skill. A qualitative design with a case study approach was employed in this study by conducting classroom observations and interviews to collect the data regarding the use and the impact of slack application in teaching writing by the teachers in EFL classrooms. The participant of this study were the students at one of senior high school in Tasikmalaya. In analyzing the data, multiple sources of data collection commonly known as triangulation as purposed was employed. The findings showed that the teacher used four steps in optimizing slack application in an online teaching writing. Introducing, memorizing and giving feedback were the strategy in teaching online by using slack application in classroom. This study suggested that English teacher need to apply Online Application as a system and tools to support the teacher in how they give a task, planning, and empowering in their teaching practices.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate and analyze the collaboration of communicative language teaching approach, audiolingual method, and cooperative language learning method which were applied during teaching - learning process in twelve grade of science 2 students in SMA 1 Singorojo Kendal.  This research employed descriptive qualitative research design. The instruments of this study were interview and observation which took approximately fifty minutes. In order to motivate and improve students’ speaking ability, so the teacher taught them in simple way first, then followed by synthesizing both of essentials methods and techniques. The result showed that teacher designed the classroom activity by implementing curriculum 2013 in which emphasized on communicative language teaching (CLT) approach. The researchers found that the teacher organized some methods in delivering material. He also provided fun and interesting games to encourage students’ motivation in learning English.The researchers infer that there are collaboration between CLT approach, audiolingual method, and CLL method as an alternative strategy in learning English.

Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to review intelligence types that students employ in relation to their foreign language learning. This correlational study aimed to investigate the correlation of multiple intelligences and students’ academic performance. The population of this study was 205 student’s 11th grade of senior high school of 03 SELUMA.  The data was collected by using total sampling learning English class eleventh senior high school.  Data analyzed this study of to investigate the correlation between the multiple intelligences and the academic achievement score of senior high school students. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics the results from Pearson Correlation of intelligence and academic achievement variables. Based on the data analysis it was found between two variables was 0.348, results showed that low correlation existed between multiple intelligences and academic performance. As a consequence, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. This indicates that multiple intelligences did not significantly affect academic performance. It seems that multiple intelligences were not the only factor that affects the achievement. Intrapersonal the leading intelligence type and the musical intelligence was the least common intelligence type employed by the students who participated in this research.

Abstract

This study experimental research investigated the effect of using Wridea on enhancing EFL writing performance in PGRI University. It shed a light on how Wridea could enhance the writing skill. Wridea helped many of the participants to be more metacognitively aware of their English writing process. The results of this study showed that Wridea could be utilized as a service for improving the writing skill outside of the classrooms.

Abstract

Several studies have recorded the increasing number of teachers who left the profession in the first year of teaching in recent years. The main cause is the difficulties over the first year of teaching and the unsatisfactory construction and growth of professional identity. This qualitative study attempted to reveal the struggles faced during their first year of teaching by EFL novice teachers working in Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia and how they coped with those struggles regarding their development of professional identity. The struggles are split into internal and external struggles based on the result. The internal struggles are linked to how teachers controlled their emotions self-efficacy, and ability to teach, their jobs and their personal opinions. The external challenges related to the management of the classroom, the abilities, and attitudes of the students, the lack of resources and facilities in the school, the relationships with their colleagues and their salaries. This research is intended to provide more insight into the realities of teachers working in an underdeveloped province like East Nusa Tenggara, in particular how they establish their professional identity in a lack of facilities and learning resources.Keywords: East Nusa Tenggara; Novice Teachers; Professional Identity; Struggles and Strategies

Abstract

The title of this research is The Effect of Using Jigsaw Technique On Students’ Vocabulary Ability. This research aimed to know how the effect of using jigsaw technique on students’s vocabulary ability at SMP Kartika 1-2 Medan. In this research, the subjects of this research were VII-1 and VII-2’s class with 62 students, VII-1 consist of 31 students called an experimental group and VII-2 consist of 31 students called a control group. This research was a quantitative research. The mean score of the pre test in experimental group was 39,45, the mean score of the post test was 75,90, the mean score of the pre test in control group was 53,41 and the mean score of the post test was 53,93. It concluded that using jigsaw technique is effective and significantly effect to improved students’ vocabulary ability. It proved by the obtained score of T-test, the T-test showed that T-observe was higher than T-table ( 25,53 > 0,05). It meant that Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected.

Abstract

This article aimed at explaining the realization of actional competence, which focused on language functions in the mood types of casual conversation. This study highlighted seven key areas of language functions proposed by Celce-Murcia et al. (2007), namely interpersonal exchange, information exchange, opinions, feelings, suasion, problems, and future scenarios. This study was descriptive qualitative research, where the participants were four students of a state university in Semarang. The finding of this study showed that among the speakers used mostly asking and giving information language function, which was realized in the form of declarative mood type. In other words, in this casual conversation among the speakers were trying to exchange information as much as possible. The present study has only investigated the realization of actional competence in students’ communication. Therefore, future researchers could investigate more deeply about the grammatical use of the students’ actional competence, especially in terms of language function. It is also crucial to include more participants with different backgrounds, such as formal situations, written discourse, or different cultures and gender.
