The results of this research revealed that the use of each translation strategy varied in terms of frequency. The translation strategies used by the students from the most dominant to the least dominant respectively were as follows ; 1) Borrowing (56.61%); 2) Omission (29.41%); 3) Synonym (6.80%), 4) Addition (3.49%), 5) and Transposition (3.49%). The applications of reduction and expansion were not found. Among all the five translation strategies found in the students’ translation works, omission, synonym and borrowing were accurately applied. The data were identified by using the identification table of IRF pattern of interaction based on Coulthard (2002) and analyzed based on the IRF model of Sinclair and Coulthard (1975) as the ideal pattern. The first finding showed that the most occurred pattern employed by the lecturer is IRF pattern as a complete pattern, and there are also IR patterns as a semi-complete pattern, and IF as an incomplete pattern. Abstract

Phonological change is a language phenomenon that occurs because language users change the distribution of phonemes in a language. The aims of this study are to explain the phonological processes that occur in English and Indonesian and to explain the differences in phonological forms between English and Indonesian. The method used in this study is a contrasting-descriptive method by comparing two languages, namely English and Indonesian. The data were taken from the speech of students taking Indonesian and English courses at the University of Bengkulu, totaling 40 students in the first semester. The results show that five types of phonological change processes occurred in English and Indonesian, namely assimilation, metathesis, epenthesis, epithesis, and deletion. The phonological change in English often occurred when two vowel phonemes meet, such as /ea/ shift to /e/, or /i/, phoneme /y/ shift to /i/. Phoneme /e/ was pronounced when two vowel phonemes meet, such as /s/ and /n/ becomes /sen/. Phoneme /g/ is pronounced multiply when it meets the sound/ng/. Phoneme /u/ is pronounced when it meets phoneme /o/ + a consonant. Phoneme /h/ is unpronounced when it meets a vowel phoneme or more vowel phonemes in the words. Meanwhile, phonological changes in Indonesian often occurred from consonant phonemes to other consonant phonemes that have almost the same sound such as phoneme /z/ shift to /s/ and /j/. Phoneme /k/ was pronounced after phoneme /u/ and phoneme /h/ is pronounced after phoneme /a/at the end of words. Phoneme /y/ was pronounced between phonemes /i/ and /a/. Phoneme /h/ was unpronounced when it meets phonemes /a/, /i/, and /u/ in words. In conclusion, the process of phonological change that occurs in English and Indonesian is due to the influence of adjacent phoneme sounds that resemble nearby sounds.

Abstract

This research attempts to describe the rhetorical structures of Indonesian author's in the conclusion section of applied linguistics international journals articles. The method employed in this study is descriptive quantitative. Thirty RA conclusion sections were extracted from two international journals; the Indonesian Journal of Applied Linguistics (IJAL) and TEFLIN journal, and examined based on the rhetorical move following Yang & Allison's proposed model of conclusion section (2003). The result revealed that, first,  the majority of RA Conclusion sections (22 [73%] out of 30 conclusion sections) contain all elements of the Conclusion sections outlined by Yang and Allison (2003), namely:  obligatory; move 1 (summarizing the study), the conventional moves; move 2 (Evaluating the study) and move 3 (deduction from the research); second, concerning steps features, most Indonesian authors tend to use step 1 in realizing move 2 (evaluating the study) This implies that those authors tend to justify their study by indicating the result of the research in evaluating the study in the conclusion section rather than stating the limitation of the research or evaluating the methodology in the conclusion section. In move 3, the Indonesian author tends to use step 1 (recommending future research) in realizing this move. This implies that the author prefers to state the possible areas for future study of study rather than drawing pedagogic implications. In conclusion, most Indonesian authors fulfilled the rhetorical structure of yang and Allison proposed model in their conclusion section.
