Abstract

The current research investigated the relationship between parenting style and emotional regulation among children in Indonesian population. A total of 126 parents of children aged between 3 and 6 years old participated in this study. The Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire Short Version (Robinson, Mandleco, Olsen, & Hart, 2001) was used to measure parents’ parenting style, and the Emotion Regulation Checklist (Shields & Cicchetti, 1997) was used to measure parents’ perceptions of children’s emotional regulation. The results revealed that there was a positive significant relationship between authoritative parenting style and the development of children’s emotional regulation, and there were negative significant relationships between authoritarian and permissive parenting styles and children’s emotional regulation in this population. This suggests that authoritative style of parenting provides the best support for the development of emotional regulation among children in an Indonesian population.

Abstract

Despite many research on the relation between social media and college students, the results are still varied. Moreover, a study that focuses on patterns of social media use is still limited, especially in Indonesia. Therefore, this study tested the relationship between patterns of Instagram (IG)-a popular social media in Indonesia-use and social adjustment of the first-year college students. This correlational study involved 137 college students in Jakarta Greater Area. Data were gathered using The Instagram Perceived Use Scale and The Social Adjustment subscale of The Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ). The multiple regression statistical analysis showed that among four patterns of IG use, only three patterns related to the freshmen' social adjustment. They were the pattern of maintaining a social connection (MSC), sharing and seeking personal information (SSPI), and gaming (GAME). Furthermore, MSC was the only significant predictor to college freshmen's social adjustment. Meanwhile, there was no correlation between social adjustment and using IG for pursuing social romantic or sexual relationships (PRSR). In conclusion, IG use could significantly predict first-year college students' social adjustment as long as the usage is intended to maintain their social connections.

Abstract

Disruptive behavior is a term that covers areas such as series of temper tantrums, too much crying and complaining, continually demands attention, disobey and against parents’ rules, aggressive against themselves or others, stealing, lying, destructive, and violent (Schroeder & Gordon, 2002). This study examine the effectiveness of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) with a 3 year-old boy who consistently opposed and showed disruptive behavior. Following 10 sessions of PCIT over 2 months, F showed significant decreases in his externalizing behavior problems at the end of the treatment. He managed to show less disruptive behavior and improving compliance to the mother. On the other hand, mother’s skills were increased in providing positive attention to the children, giving effective commands, and giving the proper consequences as children respond with compliance or non-compliance. The current case study highlights some advantages and challenges associated with the use of PCIT to treat externalizing behavior problems in very young children in Indonesia.
