Abstract

Sense of  belonging is the extent to which  person feels attached, related and belong in organization system. If, a person feels accepted,   comfortable, congruence and get recognition from an organization, this condition will motivate the person to share positive contribution to their organization. The problem with Ahmad Dahlan University is a low student sense of belonging to their university.  This condition will cause negative effects for university in the future, with increasing several students’ negative behaviors such as apathy, unresponsiveness, until higher students drop out.  It is needed to evaluate and understand the student’s sense of belongings to their university, in order to take preventive action related to a low sense of belongings of students. The aim of this study is to create and develop a sense of belongingness measurement for Ahmad Dahlan University Belongingness Scale (ADUBS), that it will be used to evaluate how high the student sense of belonging to their university. The result of exploratory factor analysis (EFA) showed two dimensions the sense of belongingness constructs that represent the sense of belongings of student to their university namely University belongings and Community belongings. The next result from confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) using structural equation modeling (SEM) confirms that measurement model of ADUBs was fitted with empirical data (Chi-square = 39.054, with p > .001, degree of freedom = 36,  CMIN = 1.085,  RMSEA =. 022, NFI = .918, TLI = .989, GFI= .961, and CFI= .993.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijere.v2i1.1667

Abstract

An educational video called Video Pembelajaran Geometri (Geometry Learning Video = VPG) is developed in this study. The video is aimed to help year 9 students in improving their level of Van Hiele geometrical thinking. VPG is designed as an alternative aids to overcome the limitation of information and communication technology (ICT) usage in Parepare, South Celebes, Indonesia. Based on Van Hiele learning model, all topics in geometry for Indonesian Secondary School (Sekolah Menengah Pertama = SMP) are included in VPG in order to support the students who are going to continue their study further. The effectiveness of VPG was tested on 180 students categorized as 90 students from level 0 (L0), 60 students from level 1 (L1), and 30 students from level 2 (L2). Comparative Analyses on the results of adapted Van Hiele Geometry Test (VHGT) pre and post VPG usage indicated that there is a significant difference between the mean scores. It was also discovered that a significant improvement in geometric thinking level is occurred in the majority of the students.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijere.v2i1.1935

Abstract

This paper aims to provide a survey of the major research works done in the domain of learning style recognition in an e-learning environment and proposes a Semantic Agent Framework for the e-Learning environment to detect individual differences existing among individuals, using their learning styles. Automatic detection of learning styles of an individual in an e-learning environment is an important problem that have been researched upon by many, as it proves beneficial to the learners to be provided with materials based on their individual preferences. To achieve this dynamic adaptability, we propose to use a mix of data-driven approach and literature-based approach. Out of the 71 models of learning styles that are described by different researchers, we consider the Felder-Silverman Learning Style Model (FSLSM) for our analysis.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijere.v2i1.2517

Abstract

The methodology of this paper continues the work I have done writing the ‘subjective academic narrative’ for publication within refereed academic journals. Storytelling is a basic human activity and the academy since the mid 20th century has begun to see its value rather than use it as the non-academic side of the dichotomy between thought and reason and feeling and emotion that the Enlightenment left as its residue of academic thought and knowledge. I use this methodology to enter into the privileged academic discussion and to add to it regarding the  relationship of Indigenous knowledge to the academy that remains a challenge in Australian Universities in this postmodern and postcolonial moment. This paper recognises the need to open discussion about how Indigenous people might be facilitated within the academy to bring their knowledge-models into the university and its traditional dominant knowledge systems. This paper looks at Practice Led Research (PLR) as a possible pathway for supporting the transition of Indigenous community scholars into university postgraduate courses. It explores how PLR contributes to an appropriate entry point into postgraduate studies for some Indigenous students who have significant life experiences and narratives and/or productions of artefacts that act to replace the breadth of undergraduate credentials. This paper identifies and explicates a nexus between Practice Led Research and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC). In doing so, it provides a reference point for University protocols and practices regarding RPL and RCC.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijere.v2i1.1715

Abstract

This study investigates the kinds of communication strategies (CSs) used by Iraqi EFL students.  The data analysed in this study were collected in Baghdad University.  The study was quantitative in nature where a questionnaire adopted from Dornyei and Scott’s taxonomy of CSs (1995).  This questionnaire was used to elicit the findings.  The subject consisted of fifty Iraqi EFL students.  The results obtained show different kinds of CSs used by Iraqi EFL students.  The pedagogical and recommendations were provided in this study.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijere.v2i1.1812

Abstract

The deteriorating performance of Filipino students in the national and international mathematics tests for the last decade has become a major challenge to Philippine education.  The Department of Education attributed this problem to students’ poor reading comprehension. Previous studies showed varied findings on the association between variables in reading and mathematics. The present study utilized the six elements of reading comprehension skills to determine their relationship to students’ performance in mathematics. A total of 666 students belonging to the randomly selected first year classes from 18 public and private high schools were taken as sample. A correlation research design was used and a competency-based achievement tests in reading comprehension and mathematics were the research instruments. Students in private schools performed better in reading comprehension skills and mathematics than their counterparts. While reading comprehension skills were insignificantly correlated to private school students’ mathematics performance, the case is different in public schools wherein three skills namely understanding vocabulary in context, getting main idea, and making inference surfaced to have connection with mathematics. The overall students’ reading comprehension skills were not significantly correlated to mathematics performance. Hence, the poor mathematics performance could be explained by other factors not related to reading comprehension skills.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijere.v2i1.1803
