Abstract

Limited integration of local plant knowledge into science learning highlighted the need to identify students’ requirements for contextual digital learning resources. This study aimed to analyze students’ needs to inform the development of a Bangka Island ethnopedagogy-based Liveworksheet incorporating Discovery Learning. A descriptive survey involved 38 Grade VII students at SMP Negeri 3 SATAP Lubuk Besar, Indonesia. Questionnaire responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic grouping. Although 94.7% of students expressed interest in learning about plants, 57.9% reported difficulties understanding plant-related material. Interest in Liveworksheet reached 92.1%, and 94.7% had access to smartphones or laptops. Furthermore, 94.7% were interested in local plants, but only 50% had previously learned about their cultural uses. All students preferred active learning involving observation, experimentation, and discovery. These findings indicated a need for interactive learning resources that connect local plants and community knowledge with scientific concepts through discovery-oriented activities. The development priorities identified were accessible digital activities, contextual plant content, and opportunities for direct exploration. These findings inform the subsequent design and evaluation of an ethnopedagogy-based Liveworksheet.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the effect of the implementation of PjBL or “Project Based Learning” integrated with STEM on students’ critical thinking skills in environmental pollution material in junior high school. A quantitative approach was used through a pre-experimental design in the form of “One Group Pre-test-Post-test Design”. The research subjects consisted of 30 seventh-grade junior high school students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using an essay test instrument developed based on critical thinking skill indicators as explained by Ennis. Furthermore, the data were analyzed through the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, paired sample t-test, and N-Gain analysis. The analysis showed that the pretest and post-test data were normally distributed. Hypothesis testing showed a significant difference between students’ critical thinking skills before and after the treatment through the value < 0.001. The average N-Gain value was 0.3993, which was in the moderate category. These findings indicate that the implementation of STEM-integrated PjBL is quite effective in improving students’ critical thinking skills in environmental pollution material.

Abstract

Methylene blue is a persistent dye that can impair light penetration and aquatic photosynthesis, while its chemical stability complicates conventional wastewater treatment. This study developed silica from a 3:1 mixture of rice husk and sugarcane bagasse, enabling the simultaneous valorization of two abundant agricultural residues, and evaluated its performance in a fixed-bed column. We subjected the mixed ash to alkaline extraction and acid precipitation, then characterized it by FTIR, XRD, SEM, and EDX. The product contained characteristic silanol and siloxane groups, exhibited an amorphous structure with a broad XRD peak at 2θ = 22.6°, and showed a rough, agglomerated nanoscale morphology that may provide accessible adsorption sites. At an initial methylene blue concentration of 23.846 mg L⁻¹ and a flow rate of 60 mL min⁻¹, the residual concentration decreased to 0.192 mg L⁻¹ after 80 min, corresponding to 99.19% removal. Removal reached 99.52% after 200 min, indicating promising performance under the tested conditions.

Abstract

The use of synthetic dyes in the batik industry may contribute to environmental pollution due to chemical residues generated during the dyeing process. Therefore, natural dyes derived from local plants have attracted attention as alternative sources of textile colorants. This study aimed to examine the color characteristics of natural dyes derived from five local plant materials when applied to hand-drawn batik using different dyeing techniques. The study employed an exploratory experimental approach, with primary data obtained through natural dye extraction, batik preparation, dyeing, fixation, and preliminary washing evaluation. The natural dye sources consisted of temulawak rhizome (Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb.), teak leaves (Tectona grandis L.f.), red cordyline leaves (Cordyline fruticosa), rambutan peel (Nephelium lappaceum), and avocado leaves (Persea americana). The extracted dyes were applied to mori fabric using dip and brush dyeing techniques, followed by fixation with alum. The results showed that the plant-derived dyes produced different observable color characteristics. Temulawak produced yellowish shades, while teak and avocado leaves produced brownish shades. Red cordyline leaves and rambutan peel produced reddish to purplish or brownish tones. Alum-treated samples generally showed brighter and lighter shades based on visual observation. The preliminary washing evaluation showed that most samples maintained their basic color characteristics after water washing, although some samples showed reduced visual color intensity after detergent washing. These findings provide preliminary evidence of the varied color characteristics produced by local plant-derived dyes in hand-drawn batik. Further studies using instrumental color measurement and standardized textile fastness testing are needed to provide quantitative evaluation.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of the Reading, Identifying, Constructing, Solving, Reviewing, and Extending (RICOSRE) learning model assisted by Mind Mapping on the critical thinking skills of Grade 10 Biology students. A quantitative quasi-experimental design featuring a non-equivalent pretest-posttest control group design with intact classes was implemented. The study population comprised 112 Grade 10 Science students across four classes at SMAN Bhakti Mulya Bunga Mayang during the 2026/2027 academic year. Using cluster random sampling, two intact classes were selected: Class X.3 (n = 28) served as the experimental group (taught via Mind Mapping-assisted RICOSRE), while Class X.2 (n = 28) served as the control group (taught via conventional Discovery Learning). Data were collected using a validated 10-item essay test measuring five critical thinking indicators adapted from Ennis. Analysis of normalized gain (N-Gain) scores revealed that the experimental group achieved a mean posttest score of 81.21 ± 8.42 with a high average N-Gain of 0.70, whereas the control group obtained a mean posttest score of 62.64 ± 9.15 with a moderate N-Gain of 0.43. Because the posttest data violated normality and homogeneity assumptions, hypothesis testing was performed using the non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test on posttest scores. The test yielded U = 0.50, z = -6.45, p < .001, indicating a statistically significant difference between the two groups. These findings suggest that integrating Mind Mapping specifically during the Constructing syntax of RICOSRE offers a structured visual scaffolding that facilitates students' analytical and evaluative skills in ecosystem topics.
