Abstract

The patriarchal culture, which can be tracked down in most societies around the world, constructs the concept of ideal women. In this system, a woman is considered an ideal woman only if she represents particular traits. This study aimed to examine the representation of ideal women in the structure of selected German fairy tales by The Brothers Grimm. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative. The five selected German fairy tales were Cinderella, Snow White, The Six Swans, The Twelve Brothers, and The Three Little Menin the Woods. To analyze those stories, the theory used in this study was Propp’s framework in describing tales, particularly Narrative Structure and Dramatic Personae. The results revealed that the structure of Brother Grimm’s fairy tales showed the traits of ideal women that are portrayed by the heroines of all the selected fairy tales as a consequence of the concept of ideal women constructed in the society. On the other side, the representation of non-ideal women is also demonstrated by the villains in the fairy tales.

Abstract

Gender basically gives distinction to males and females, where our public domain is inseparable from this social construction. This study aimed to identify the language use of the Middle Eastern freedom activists’ speeches based on gender perspective. The data source was from male and female Middle Eastern freedom activists’ speech videos. A number of participants were also involved to measure the powerful voice in the speech. The results showed that male and female speakers produced a set of spoken language differences, which differed by form, topic, content, and purpose. In using the language for speech, both male and female speakers produced some elements in random frequency. To conclude, one gender could not be considered more potential than the other to influence the audience when delivering the speech. Other factors, particularly non-verbal ones, exist to give impacts on the speech performance so that it has a certain degree to influence the audience.

Abstract

This research is aimed to prove that old literature helps the creation of modern literary works, such as providing inspiration, assisting authors in making themes, characterizations, motives, and so on. One of the modern literary works inspired by old literary works is the novel titled Sang Keris. Reading this 107 pages novel, we will feel a very thick Javanese nuance. By using the intertextual approach, this paper will focus on discussing the "novelty" contained in the novel Sang Keris, in the sense that "novelty " is a form of deviation, transformation, or rebellion against old literary works that existed far before. The results of this study prove that there are six novelties in the novel Sang Keris, in relation to old literary works. First, the novelty in the character of Patih Lokajaya. Second, the novelty in the Pulanggeni figure. Third, the novelty in the Lembu Peteng character. Fourth, the novelty in Larung Manah ritual. Fifth, the novelty in Raden Katong character. Sixth, the novelty in the character of Parikesit.

Abstract

Individual actions will usually be motivated by a symbolic structure in accordance with the society in where the subject lives. This makes certain individuals and their behavior never be liberated from the symbolic order appliedin their society. In other words, these individuals can never be authentic because all actions must be under the control of appropriate laws and regulations. This certainly controls the pattern of life sincethe individual’s mindset is subject to the ideology that hegemonies them. In the Zizekian perspective, the subject is always in a lacking condition in their symbolic order, so that they continue to desire the Real. When their desire for the Real is fulfilled through concrete actions that go beyond symbolic laws, authentic subjectivity is formed. This studyanalyzed two main problems: (1) the actions or behavior of the main female characters (Anne and Mary) which were assumed to be radical behavior, and (2) a comparison of the chances to become a radical subject in “The Other Boleyn Girl” novel by using the concept of a radical subject proposed by Zizek.
