Abstract

Identity is seen as something important to humans in society, as it shows the origin of the self. Sometimes, someone cannot accept the identity that is attached to them, which will lead to the process of forming a new identity. This case also happens to the main character of The Scent of Sake, a novel by Joyce Lebra published in 2009. Rie Omura is not allowed to interfere in the sake making business, so that she tries to change that identity. Thus, this study aims to examine the process of identity formation that occurs in the character of a Japanese woman, represented by Rie. To answer the research problem, this study uses a textual analysis as the research methods. The theory used to assist the analysis is a perspective proposed by Žižek regarding the formation of subject’s identity to achieve the stage of authentic subject. The results show that in her efforts to unbind herself from the symbolic order, she makes attempts to rule the brewer house. However, her action cannot be categorized as a radical action since it cannot bring her out of the Symbolic. It confirms that Rie is failed to be an authentic subject. Keywords: Japanese Woman, Authentic Subject, Žižek, The Scent of Sake Identitas dipandang sebagai sesuatu yang penting bagi manusia yang hidup bermasyarakat karena menunjukkan asal-usul. Kata Kunci: Perempuan Jepang, Subjek Autentik, Žižek, The Scent of Sake

Abstract

Permasalahan mengenai kegilaan sering menjadi tema para penulis sastra. Kata Kunci: Kegilaan, Foucault, Lady Audley’s Secret, Mary Elizabeth Braddon The issue of madness is often the main focus of the writers. The theme of madness is also present in many literary works in the Victorian era. Major writers present narratives about women who have a strategy to avoid patriotic culture, but do not want to be thrown into asylum. Those also happened to the main character in the novel Lady Audley’s Secret (1862) by Mary Elizabeth Braddon. Lucy Graham grew up in poverty; she was very concerned with improving her social and financial status. The fact that his mother was institutionalized by insanity had haunted Lucy all the time. She married wealthy people such George Talboys and Robert Audley, but ended up with a very strict patriarchal culture which brought her to madness. Thus, this study aims to find out how Lucy's character is constructed to become a "crazy person" in the view of Victorian society. To answer the research problem, this study uses textual analysis as its research method. The theory used to help the analysis is the perspective proposed by Foucault regarding the construction of madness that occurs on the subject. The results show that manipulative and nasty actions committed by Lucy were considered as insanity and not in accordance with the norms and values of the era. In the end she was put into asylum and died in it.Keywords: Madness, Foucault, Lady Audley’s Secret, Mary Elizabeth Braddon

Abstract

Individual actions will usually be motivated by a symbolic structure in accordance with the society in where the subject lives. This makes certain individuals and their behavior never be liberated from the symbolic order appliedin their society. In other words, these individuals can never be authentic because all actions must be under the control of appropriate laws and regulations. This certainly controls the pattern of life sincethe individual’s mindset is subject to the ideology that hegemonies them. In the Zizekian perspective, the subject is always in a lacking condition in their symbolic order, so that they continue to desire the Real. When their desire for the Real is fulfilled through concrete actions that go beyond symbolic laws, authentic subjectivity is formed. This studyanalyzed two main problems: (1) the actions or behavior of the main female characters (Anne and Mary) which were assumed to be radical behavior, and (2) a comparison of the chances to become a radical subject in “The Other Boleyn Girl” novel by using the concept of a radical subject proposed by Zizek.

Abstract

Women's presence as the dominant figure in the construction of patriarchal society is an emerging issue presented by Curtis Sittenfeld in her Novels. Liz is one of the female characters Curtis Sittenfeld displays in her novel Eligible. This figure of women who appear in her novel is very complex with many various dynamics. This study aims to examine the female main character as a loving subject in a male-dominated society. Applying Giddens's theory of loving subjects, the study's results revealed that Liz is described as the loving subject who seeks to build an intimate relationship with the man who became her choice. Through her behaviour and appearance, she was described as a loving subject who has a smooth character, sensitive and romantic. Liz is also shown as a private autonomous and has humanist and psychological dimensions, which are very complex inside. Curtis Sittenfeld as a writer presents the presence of women as the loving subject in a relationship of intimacy that is liquid and unrestricted.  In this research, women are presented as an autonomous entity that has the same rights in a male-dominated society.

Abstract

The concept of power remains an eternal topic of discussion, as it permeates every aspect of human existence. Likewise, in literary works, the theme of power is a central topic for several writers. One of the Indonesian writers, Seno Gumira Ajidarma, argues that in literary works, the authors are free to write reality and voice criticism, hopes, and concerns of the people against the authorities. In his work “Presiden Jebule”, Aji Darma tries to show how power is regulated and imprisoning society through rules and punishment. The method used in this research is post-structuralism by Michel Foucault. The research finding focuses the story based on the relationship between power and punishment. The research results showed that in President Jebule's short story, there was a production of power where the people were afraid and obeyed all the rules created by Jebule. The regulations that require people to have hairstyles that match Jebule's have become the panoptic system that regulates them. The crucial idea is that anyone who does not comply with the rules made by Jebule will be subject to sanctions such as torture and capital punishment.

Abstract

This research aims to analyse the construction of urban space in the short story "A Little Cloud" by James Joyce through a postcolonial perspective. This short story describes how the character Little Chandler and his family experience dislocation and discrimination in London, which was initially expected to be a utopian city with economic progress and industrialisation. This research uses postcolonialism theory and Sara Upstone's concept of urban space to identify how London's urban space became a colonial space that maintained the stability of colonialism through boundaries constructed to distinguish between the English and the Irish. The results show the ambiguity between the idea of utopia and dystopia in London's urban space and the resistance strategies used by the characters in the short stories to deal with pressure and oppression. These resistance strategies include displacement and carnivalization of identity in public spaces. This research also highlights how the depiction of the city in postcolonial literature questions the city's position as a friendly space for all people, including minorities and migrants, and whether there is a repetition of the relationship between the coloniser and the colonised.

Abstract

This study examines the trauma and memory associated with the Vietnam War experience in Shirley Ann Grau's short story "Homecoming," drawing on Paul Ricoeur’s narrative Theory, Maurice Halbwachs' Theory of collective memory, and Cathy Caruth's concept of trauma. The literary psychology approach analyzes how narration plays a role in individuals' struggle to confront trauma deeply rooted within. Specifically, Paul Ricoeur’s Theory is employed to depict the psychological struggle process in facing and overcoming trauma through narration as a medium of reflection and understanding of psychic wounds. Halbwachs' Theory explains how collective memory is formed by groups post-conflict, while Caruth's concept highlights trauma as an unresolved psychic wound profoundly affecting consciousness. The story portrays ongoing internal conflicts and wounds due to war trauma, as well as the crucial psychological struggle dynamics in the healing process. The findings affirm literature's vital role as a medium for reflecting historical memory, aiding post-conflict reconstruction, and enriching social interaction within society.

Abstract

Abstract

This article reframes debates on Muslim women’s piety by moving from essences to practices that materialize at thresholds. Taking the short-story collection Heart Lamp as an analytic site, it proposes an “interface ethics” that reads piety as embodied coordination across veil–gate–movement. A diffractive close reading aligns posthuman feminism with Islamic feminist hermeneutics to map domestic ecologies, school-gate encounters, bus rides, humor as de-escalation, and multilingual drift as instances where agency is distributed across bodies, garments, objects, and spaces. This study identifies three significant findings: first, domestic scenes disclose micropolitics of piety that recalibrate authority through care work, timing, and spatial tact rather than doctrinal dispute. Second, material thresholds—corridors, ticket lines, doorways—assemble pious comportment as relational, iterative, and auditable in the text, shifting analysis from moral judgment to situated coordination. Third, accented translation sustains a polyvocal, posthuman voice: local Islamic registers remain audible while critique travels, preventing flattening into secular feminist or pietist monologues. These insights offer a portable heuristic for literary criticism and policy discourse: attend to interfaces, not identities. The study clarifies hijab controversies beyond binary moral panics, and suggests design implications for school-gate protocols, uniform guidelines, and queue management that minimize coercion while supporting dignity. It also outlines methodological audit trails—scene matrices linking indicators, quotations, and claims—that render hermeneutic reasoning transparent. The contribution is conceptual (interface ethics), empirical (text-grounded mappings), and practical (design heuristics). Centered on Heart Lamp’s South Asian Muslim milieux, the framework generalizes to comparable literatures and arenas, offering prompts for gate design, translation pedagogy, and dignity-forward regulation.
