Abstract

Various phenomena, concepts and theories in music can be explained by mathematics. Moreover, it can be an approach in the process of song creation, composition, or music arrangement. Related to this, this study discusses the mapping of chord progressions based on interval combinations in chromatic circles. To be more specific, by connecting the musical notes with lines that represent various combinations of two specific types of intervals into a series of notes (chord progression patterns) in one loop ( starts and ends at note C). The interval combination pattern refers to the smallest size, namely m2 (minor second /minor second, 1 semitone step). This research was conducted to produce various patterns of unconventional chord progression patterns viewed through a tonal harmony system. This research is motivated by the strong influence of the tonal harmony system limiting creativity in the music creation process. Therefore, it takes an approach, method, or other system that needs to be tested to get out of the system. The result of this research is that there are 32 variations of chord progression patterns (series of notes) which are summarized in geometric shapes. By comparing the geometric shapes, the patterns appear mathematically, systematic, and symmetrical. In its application, these patterns seem unconventional, come out of a tonal harmony system (it can still be studied through the system, depending on the chord shape used) and produce a unique sound. Keywords: chord progression, interval, chromatic circle, music creation

Abstract

Bising Dalam Hening (Noise in Silence) is a dance work inspired by the atmosphere of Cianjuran song’s mamaos entitled “Lokatmala”. This atmosphere inspires the soul about, a longing for the cool, peaceful, and peaceful rural atmosphere. The poetry of the song then became an expression of contemporary dance works, which later developed into a phenomenon of natural destruction due to human activity. The theory applied in the creative process of creating this dance is the hermeneutic theory by Paul Ricoeur. This is as an interpretation of understanding in explaining, translating, and expressing ideas about natural beauty. The methods used include exploration, improvisation and formation stages. Through the theory and method used, coupled with the creative process of realizing ideas of religious experience about self-memory, this dance work can be realized. The admiration of the divine work reminds us how nature has become a part of human life, which must be maintained as an extension of God’s hand. Furthermore, It becomes a form of dance that has a moral message about the relationship between humans and nature and its Creator. Keywords: Dance, silent noise, natural environment, hermeneutics.

Abstract

The interesting aspect of various architectural works of Wolff Schoemaker in Bandung city is the interaction between the sphere of Western and Eastern influence expressing full Indonesian ornamentation. This can be seen in the use of Kala’s head in the Landmark building. The figure is depicted with a face without a lower jaw placed on the building through a symmetrical shape, but with a dynamic ornament. The purpose of this research is to examine the meaning and influence of Kala’s head in Schoemaker’s architecture. This study is qualitative research using descriptive analysis methods. It explains the conception of the times in terms of form, characteristics and their translation in the myths of Javanese society. It was adopted in colonial buildings which made a cultural acculturation in architecture. The results of the analysis show that the Kala ornament in the building is influenced by the shape of the temples in the Central Java period. It has an identical shape to the Kala at the Gedong Songo temple and the Semar temple functioning as an antidote to negativity in the building. Keywords: Ornaments, Architecture, Kala, Wolff Shoemaker

Abstract

Benny Yohanes (usually written as BenJon for his stage name) is known for his works that are oppositional towards the hegemony of realism in Bandung theater, especially the realism theater of Suyatna Anirun. BenJon’s works generally imply political themes, or at least as comments on political situations or ideological critics. However, he uses different approach, for example from the slogan of Rendra’s Theater Workshop. In some of Benjon’s performances, there is an impression that the stage is dominated by symbolic festivities. Excitement can be found in artistic furniture, props, hand props, costumes, musical furniture, and make up. This paper is aimed at examining one of BenJon’s works, namely Shakespeare Carnivora, which is considered by BenJon as a show that is carried out outside of the ethics of the process and its directing tradition. Not only tried to oppose the tendency of artistic excitement by using significant objects, Shakespeare Carnivora was also directed collaboratively with Irwan Jamal. They work with the actors who are members of the Oyag Forum. This research is specifically intended to discover and investigate the postcolonial conditions in the Shakespeare Carnivora performance. More specifically, through the concepts of appropriation and ambivalence, which intertextually combine William Shakespeare’s Hamlet text, the legend of Sangkuriang-Dayang Sumbi and the narrative of official Indonesian history. Keywords: Shakespeare Carnivora, BenJon, Critical Ideology, Appropriation, Mimicry, Postcolonial Condition

Abstract

This paper is aimed to analyze a collaborative musical work between rebab and digital music. The analysis will be both on the content of the work and the media used, as well as the influence of technology on the composer’s work process involving their ideas. The work is entitled Lisunagara which means introducing fiddle to a broader realm. The research method used in this paper is a qualitative research method focusing on the description and analysis of the work. McLuhan’s theory of technological determination is considered in accordance with the object of this study where technology is able to influence human behavior. The results of this research prove that the fiddle cannot only be played in a convention (tradition) setting but can also be played through a digital approach so that it can be juxtaposed with other genres. Keywords: rebab, lisunagara, technological determinism, tradition, digital
