Abstract

Abstract The present study aimed at describing the English teacher’s problems in implementingthe 2013 curriculum in online learning at SMA Muhammadiyah Boarding SchoolTarakan. A case study was conducted to an English teacher at SMA MuhammadiyahBoarding School Tarakan. Data were collected through observation, interview, anddocumentation. The concurrent flows of analysis (data reduction, data display, andconclusion drawing) were used to reveal the English teaching problems. The result ofanalysis disclosed the problems from three teaching dimensions. In the preparation,the teacher found a hard struggling to compile the instructional documents because ofthe limitation of time in making the documents and in obtaining the references foronline learning. In the teaching and learning process, the teacher did not fully meetthe target of learning materials listed in the lesson plans because he had to adapt thematerials to the online class atmosphere. Controlling the students’ activities was alsothe challenging part during online class because the teacher could not see the studentsdirectly. Although, the teacher had mastered on how to use online learning platforms,some students could not use those platforms appropriately. The other problems wereunstable internet connection and support from students’ parents. These led thestudents became passive and decrease their motivation. In the assessment process, theteacher felt burdened because the assessment components were too complex. Besidesthat, there was a lot of tolerances given by the teacher to students.

Abstract

This study attempted to characterize the prominent role of English teachers and studentresponses in online lessons during the Covid-19 pandemic at SMA Negeri 1 Tarakan.A descriptive design with a qualitative approach was utilized in the research, whichdescribed the actual situation in the field. The researcher employed interviewprotocols, questionnaires, observation sheets, and documentation to gather the data.Five English teachers and students from class XI Linat A (27 students) from SMANegeri 1 Tarakan served as the researcher participants in this study. Informer,Organizer, Motivator, Director, Mediator, Evaluator, Advisor, Diagnostician, andFacilitator were the most common positions identified by the researcher, and studentsresponses matched the nine functions played by the teacher. During their onlineEnglish Classes, the students expressed their honest feelings to their teacher. Inconclusion, the findings of this study had provided the answer to the research problems.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to find out whether or not there is any significant correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their speaking achievement. The study was correlational study. All of female students of the eight grade students at AL-Hidayah Modern Islamic Boarding School Kota Jambi were the population with the total number 163 students. The writer used purposive sampling to select the sample of the study. There were 30 students selected by means of several considerations; (1) The students were those who lived in dormitory, (2) The students’ speaking score taken from the school document were 80, (3) The students were those who were selected in the language program, (4) The students were those who did not take English course elsewhere. The data were collected by using two instruments; vocabulary and speaking tests. The data showed that most of students were categorized Excellent in their vocabulary achievement and good at their speaking achievement. The results of statistical data indicate that there was a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and students’ speaking achievement. However the two variables were not significantly correlated [r=0.079, n=30, p0.05].  Keywords: Correlation, Vocabulary Mastery, Speaking Achievement

Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out whether using audio visual media can improve the students’ listening comprehension at seventh grade students ofMTs Negeri Tarakan. This research used CAR (Classroom Action Research) conductedin two cycles, each cycle consists of two meetings. The instrument of this researchwere observation checklist for teacher and students, and listening test. The result ofthe observation checklist for teacher got score in the first cycle, meeting I: 74(70.47%) and meeting II: 80 (746.19%) then, the second cycle the score in meeting I:83 (79.04%) and meeting II: 88 (81.90%). And The result of the students score in first cycle 19 (70.37%) students success to reach the minimum passed grade (KKM) and 8 (26.62%) students fail to reach the minimum passed grade. But insecond cycle there was improvement of the result of the students’ score in listeningcomprehension, can be seen from the result that 22 (81.48%) students success toreach the minimum passed grade and only 5 (18.51%) students fail to reach theminimum passed grade. The conclusion in this research by using audio visual media inlearning English can improve students’ listening comprehension especially for seventh grade students in MTs Negeri Tarakan. Abstract

The aimed of this research is to improve the student’s vocabulary mastery in English by applying index card match strategy in teaching and learning process  at  the seventh  grade students of SMP  Nasional  Plus  Indo Tionghoa Tarakan.This  research  was use classroom  action research  (CAR). The research consist of two cycles and each cycle consist of three meetings. The research was conducted on February 05th until 21st, 2020 in SMP Nasional Plus Indo Tionghoa Tarakan. The researcher used all the seventh grade students as the research subject where there are only 32 students of seventh grade. The subject consist of 16 females and 16 males. The technique of collecting the data used observation checklist to observe the teaching and learning process and vocabulary test to check the students’ English  vocabulary mastery. The research  result showed that the percentage of success students in vocabulary test for the first cycle was 65.6% and the second cycle was 87.5%. Then the observation result showed that the percentage of first cycle was 91% for the teacher and 84.3% for the students and the percentage of the second cycle was 88% for the teacher and 87% for the students. Therefore, it prove that the index card match strategy can improve the students’ English vocabulary mastery  at  the seventh  grade students of SMP  Nasional  Plus  Indo Tionghoa Tarakan.
