Abstract

In this essay, five major writing teaching approaches are described. The first is the controlled-composition approach. In this approach, writing is taught to improve students’ non-writing skills, that is, speaking, listening, reading, and other language aspects such as vocabulary and grammar. The second is the current-traditional rhetoric approach. In this approach, the aim is to improve students' writing by focusing on language components that are important to becoming a writer, including vocabulary, sentence structures, paragraph structures, and essay development. The third approach is the process approach, which views writing as an individual process. In that sense, the intervention of writing teachers in the teaching of writing should be minimal, if not absent altogether, unless student writers want their teachers' help in writing. The fourth approach is the genre approach. In this approach, writing is seen as a social phenomenon in which certain models of writing must be well-mastered by student writers so that they can later produce them within their society. The last is a contextual approach which combines both process and genre approaches. In this approach, the teaching and learning of writing are based on the writing teachers' analysis of their students' potentials, interests, and needs in writing. It is suggested that the contextual approach be applied in our schools because it is more relevant along our students' journey to becoming great writers.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the relationship of traditional house and communal farming land in Manggaraian society. The study is viewed from the perspective of cultural linguistics as one of the new theoretical perspectives in cognitive linguistics exploring the relationship of language, culture, and conceptualization. The study is descriptive-qualitative. The results of study show that the relationship of traditional house and communal farming land in Manggaraian society is reflected in the verbal expression of Manggaraian language, Gendangn one, lingkon pe’ang ‘Drum inside, round field outside’. The forms and meanings of linguistic phenomena used in the verbal expression designate the conceptualization of Manggaraian society regarding the ownership of the mbaru gendang as the origin house of the wa’u as a patrilineal-genealogic clan living in one village and the lingko randang as common farming land belonging to the wa’u as the source of their life welfare as dry land farmers. The verbal expression is a linguistic evidence inherited from the ancestors of Manggaraian society indicating the existence of the wa’u as partilineal-genealogic clan as a house-based community whose livelihood is as dry land farmers.

Abstract

This research is entitled “Improving Students’ Ability in Writing Procedure Texts by Using Short Video”. The purpose is to know whether or not the use of short video is effective in improving the student’s ability to write procedure text, and this research was classified as action research. It was done in two cycles. The research was done with 30 students in third-semester students of the English Study Program of Nusa Cendana University in the academic year 2023/2024. The data obtained during the research were qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were in the form of an observation checklist while the quantitative data were in the form of the students' scores. The subject was taught by a short video for two cycles and then the writer collected their data through a test. The result shows that the mean of the post-test in cycle two is higher than that of the test and post-test cycle one, which indicates that there is a significant increase in students’ writing, The mean of the pre-test was 63.16 and it increased to the post-test cycle one to become 74.16, the post-test cycle two also increased become 87.17. In other words, the alternative hypothesis which says, Improving Students’ Ability in Writing Procedure Texts by using Short Video is effective. Therefore, teachers of English are suggested to use short videos in teaching English, especially procedural text.
