Abstract

TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language) is widely used to measure one’s ability in English. In fact, learning TOEFL is always by answering questions. Whatever the subjects (listening, structure, error analysis or reading), students will be faced on a lot of questions. In many cases, students were tired and bored of answering questions. They even did not comprehend the subjects. To solve that problem, applying question-making task can be a solution. This study explained how the task improved students’ comprehension on TOEFL subjects. Furthermore, the task would build students’ motivation to involve in teaching-learning process. This study was also focused on exploring the result of applying question-making task as a TOEFL teaching tool. The aim of this study is to introduce TOEFL teaching technique that could enable students to comprehend TOEFL subjects. In addition, by making their own questions would motivate them to be involved in learning process.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate the factors influenced language shift of Mandailingnese in Bandar Selamat. Mandailingnese language is one of the vernaculars or Regional Languages in Indonesia that some of the society in Bandar Selamat. People are influenced by another language, because of several factors that people would not use their own language purely anymore. They would shift from their own language to another, which was known as language shift. Siregar (1998) found that language shift happen in the youth generation bilingual in Medan. According to Fasold (1984), language shift refers to changes in language use among a community of speakers such as when a community started to use on language in domain and functions in which its members had previously used another language and shift in the number of speakers of a language. In general, Mandailingnese Language shift in Bandar Selamat was influenced by bilingualism factors, economic factors, social factor, political factor, demographic factor, value and attitude factor, and the lack of Mandailingnese language competence factor. However, there are few different factors between the second and the third generation. Unlike the second generation, bilingual and economic factor are not significant factors for the third generation which influence them to shift from Mandailingnese language to Indonesian language since most of the subjects of the third generation are monolinguals.

Abstract

This study was intended to find out the effect of using cooperative learning strategy on students’ speaking ability of SMA Mardi Lestari. The research was conducted by quantitative research that used experimental group and control group. The population of this study was all the second year students of SMA Mardi Lestari Medan. 49 students were taken as the sample of this research. The sample was divided into two groups: the first group (25 students) as the experimental group and the second group (24 students) as the control group. The writer used t-test formula to analyze the data. The data were calculated by using t-test formula. The result of the analysis shows that t-observed (6.13) is higher than t-table (3.551) at the level of significance 0.01 and the degree of freedom (df) 47. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Thus, it can be concluded that Cooperative Learning Strategy affects the students’ speaking ability.

Abstract

Translation is dealing with transferring meaning from source language into target language. In simple cases, it can be translating word by word. While for some cases, such translation may seem awkward or even confusing and funny. It may happen when certain words are translated into inappropriate equivalent words. The translation, then, fails to transfer the meaning from source language. Based on the aim, it is necessary to catch the idea of the text. English as the language of science, including computer, is used widely in many textbooks. In fact, there are many words which have no equivalent words in Indonesian. This study analyzes the process of translating English into Indonesian on computer text. The object of the study is English articles used by Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science of Potensi Utama University. The study shows that there are two things to be paid attention in translating English computer text into Indonesian; finding the appropriate equivalent words, and keeping non-equivalent words as they are.

Abstract

The objectives of this qualitative research were (1) to identify the factors that affect the maintenance of Minang language (ML) in Kotamatsum II Medan, (2) to discover the parents’ efforts in maintaining ML in Kotamatsum II Medan and (3) to find out the reason why the speakers have to maintain ML. The population is the Minang’s people in Kotamatsum II Medan. The sample was 10 families including 10 parents and their children. The research sees to investigate the language maintenance both parents and children by Minang’s families in Kotamatsum II Medan. After distributing questionnaire and did some interviews it is found that Minang’s families in Kotamatsum II Medan especially for the third generation (children) had the danger level in ML when they communicated to each other. Meanwhile, the data analysis also showed that both fathers and mothers communicated to each other with ML but when they communicated to their children sometimes they mixed between Indonesia and Minang Language. This condition occurred because of the influence of the environment

Abstract

English class is one of main sources of students to learn English as a second language in Indonesia. There might be a problem in English language teaching. This study aims at solving the low achievement of students’ speaking ability in University of Potensi Utama through video making activity. It applied Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the research design. The subject of this research was SI (System Information)-B day class who was sitting in the first semester which consisted of 24 students. The research was conducted in two cycles. The instrument for collecting the data were speaking test, observation sheet, and questionnaire sheet. Based on the analysis, students’ speaking achievement is improved in every test which are pre-test (61.7), post-test in cycle I (68.80) and post-test in cycle II (80.1). Based on the observation sheet and questionnaires, it was found that the teaching learning process ran well and the students were more active, motivated and enthusiastic. It was concluded that making video activity can improve the students’ speaking achievement.
