Abstract

The speech act of request is a common speech act used in every day interactions. However, because of its nature to impose on other people, it is very important that people select the appropriate strategy in making requests. There are several factors that may influence the production of requests, one of them is the gender of the speaker. This study is an attempt investigate how Indonesian male and female learners of English make English requests. To collect the data, a questionnaire in the form of a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) is distributed to the respondents. The DCT consists of six scenarios that reflect different social situations, each with different combinations of close / distant social distance, and high / equal / low power between the interlocutors. From this, the respondents are to produce requests based on the different social situations presented in each of the scenarios. The DCT is distributed to students of the English Language and Culture Department at Bunda Mulia University. The total number of respondents is 70 people, which consists of 35 males and 35 females. The findings of the study reveal that both gender groups employ similar request strategies and modifications throughout the six scenarios, with only slight differences. First of all, the most frequently used request strategy is the query preparatory. This strategy, modified by questions and modals, is the preferred strategy for both male and female students. Additionally, in terms of modifiers, the most preferred downgraders for both gender groups are politeness markers please and supportive reasons. From these request strategies and modifications, it can be said that the females are more indirect than the males in their production of requests. Keywords: Request, gender, directness

Abstract

Learning a language is not merely learning its grammar. There are some other factors which should be covered in language learning, e.g. language in use, or meaning and communication. In other words, L2 learners of English not only need to reach grammar competence, but also pragmatic competence. Unfortunately, pragmatic competence is rather neglected as language learning and teaching, most of the time, puts emphasis on grammar competence. Hence, in this paper, I would like to discuss the importance of integrating pragmatic competence, in this case, conversational implicature, in English language teaching and learning materials. A previous study, conducted by Manowong (2011), reported that non-native speakers of English have difficulty in interpreting conversational implicature. Thus, teachers should make great efforts to help the learners raise their conversational implicature awareness. One of the most effective ways to raise learners’ awareness on conversational implicature is by making use of authentic materials. Movies could be great sources to help learners raise their conversational implicature awareness. Therefore, in this paper, I would like to propose a model of materials which integrate some scenes of a movie that might be useful for teachers and learners in English language learning and teaching.  Keywords: Raising pragmatics awareness, conversational implicature, movies

Abstract

Speech sounds contain thousands of acoustical features. The linguistic acoustical features can be importantly used to recognize the identity of the speakers due to the fact that every person produces different sounds. This paper is descriptively aimed to investigate the role of tone frequency characters to recognize a speaker’s identity. In order to achieve the objective of this research, the researcher pictures the character of tone frequencies by using PRAAT 4.5.1.4. Supported by mathematical measurement, the writer will formulize the role of these features for identification of personal identity and describe the logical implication of this formulation. Keywords: Tone, frequency, acoustic, identity, recognition

Abstract

This research is intended to find out the types of code switching that is used in short stories and to describe the reasons why a writer does code switching in her short stories. It is a case study involving a writer of short story. Three short stories as document analysis and interview served as the data collection method. The result of this research indicated that the intra-sentential type of code switching occurs mostly in her short stories, followed by inter-sentential code switching. In addition, the reasons why code switching occurs are firstly, that certain notions or concepts are simply better expressed in the other language; secondly, code switching is used as a communicative or social strategy to show speaker involvement, mark group identity, exclude someone, raise one’s status, show expertise, and so on; thirdly, it is used to refill a linguistic need for a word or an expression; and finally, the last reason is to strengthen command. Keywords: Code switching, short stories
