IJOLTL invites original manuscripts in the fields of language, language teaching, linguistics, and applied linguistics. Although articles are written in English, the IJOLTL welcomes studies dealing with the teaching of languages other than English as well. Research on culture of various perspectives as well as linguistics is also welcome. In addition, IJOLTL also considers papers in the areas of applied linguistics, language testing, pragmatic, sociolinguistics and discourse analysis. Reviews of literature are also acceptable for the IJOLTL. The length of paper should be between 3,500 to 8,000 words as defined in the author’s guidelines.

Abstract

The aims of this research are to identify flirting used in the movie and the message behind the flirting and their effects. Relying upon qualitative method,  data were analyzed using constant comparison methods. Steps of collections included: watching the movie, reading  books which contain of flirting of speaking, putting the theory of flirting into a movie to select the movie that can be explored by the theory, and identifying the type of flirting speaking based on the movie. The female flirting constituted real data about the elements of women language, and interpretations meaning from the effect of female flirting in speaking. The results of this research indicated that female flirting has some styles of language that can be seen from the element of women language. Evidently, types of meaning which can help to know the interpretations and the effects of female flirting appeared in the movie.

Abstract

  The aim of this research is to find out the usage of figurative language appear in The Room of My Life’s poem by Anne Sexton and Still I Rise’s poem by Maya Angelou. The study focused on kinds of figurative language that appeared in the poems. A descriptive qualitative method was used in this study. Data were gathered from each line of the poetry then figurative language were grounded.The results showed that the poems mostly used three kinds of figurative language: personification, simile, and metaphor. Personifications were more dominant than similes and metaphors in The Room of My Life and similes were more dominant than personifications and metaphors in Still I Rise.

Abstract

 & This study describes characters and moral values in the Javanese Novel entitled Kepanggang Wirang (Burned Above the Shame) by Tiwiek SA.  Description dealt with psycholiguical needs in accordance with Abraham Maslow theory and educational values.  This study is qualittaive research and applied psychoanalysis as the research design.  Data were collected using contant analysis and interview and were analyzed using content analysis that included: taxonomy, domain, and thematic analyses.  The study revealed that psychological needs from Maslow including: sex, security, self-esteem, and love and affection, and self-actualization were present in the novel.  In addition, moral values having positive and negative perspectives were conveyed in the novel reflecting experiences in the society the readers should have considered in the real community lifes. .

Abstract

As a modified replication of Bellingham’s (2004) investigation, this case study primarily explores experiences of 30s Indonesian university students in learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at English Language Education Study Program, Masyarakat University Indonesia (ED-DU). The study specifically investigates cases of two ED-DU students who shared their experiences in learning EFL in their age. I recalled their experiences using an open-ended questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. I continued to collate and summarize the data into themes. Eventually, the present findings reveal six learning patterns of the students, confirm the existence of L2 acquisition for adult learners stated by Bellingham’s investigation, and provide some evidence that EFL learning acquisition is not limited by age.

Abstract

  This study analyzed social problems as reflected in the Preman, an anthology of short story by Tiwiek SA.  The social problems were encountered in the attitudes the characters of the stories occured.  The study used ontent analysis that use psycholinguistics as an analysis of a literary work.  Sources of the study was an anthology consisting of six short stories.  The study revealed that social conflict in the story reflected problems in social daily live where Javanese community normally faced. The problems include: thuggery, clashes, greedines, infidelity, prostitution, economy, and social inequality.  Themes of good and bad conducts also appeared as performed by the primary characters.

Abstract

This research aims to classify, describe and explain verbal and non-verbal expressions in eloping tradition (mombolasuako) of Tolaki based on the procession comprehensively. Theories used to solve the problem are ethnolinguistics and ethnoscience. Methodologically, the ethnographic method was used in this study. The data includes primary and secondary data that were collected by participant observation and an in-dept interview. All collected data were analyzed by using Spradely ethnoscience’s analysis and linguistics’ analysis. The study revealed that verbal expressions in mombolasuako include verbal utterances, recitation and remark. The non-verbal expressions consisted of (1) the tradition objects must be served by bride groom consists of process (2) gestures of tradition casts in the implementation of the traditions process and (3) tradition casts. The mombolasuako’s process of verbal and non-verbal expressions including verbal utterances, gestures and tradition casts were adapted to tradition.
