Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the improvement of the student’s achievement in speaking by listening practice for Broadcasting and Public Speaking class at Bina Sarana Informatika University. These classes got English subject at even semester. They learnt to focusing on speaking, that’s why the researchers help the students to achieve their performance in speaking skill. By using listening practice through audio and video, the researchers hope that they will improve their speaking. The method that has been used by this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR) where the researchers as well as the teachers involved in the class that they are observing. Data were taken by sample of 20 students from each class. Technique for collecting data was descriptive qualitative and quantitative. Technique for analyzing data was used descriptive which describe the finding of the research which used some tables, frequency which was benefit to describe the achievements of the students in speaking from pre-test, cycle 1, and cycle 2. The finding of the research was the students’ achievement in speaking were good by using listening practice during a semester. The final achievement from Broadcasting got score 6,24 in average and Public Relation class got score 7,06.

Abstract

Abstract – Deixis is an interesting topic in pragmatic. Deixis is a word that represents something else in utterance. It could be referred to a person, to place, and to time. The reason of choosing deixis is because the languages in the novel often use pragmatic language. The writers used descriptive qualitative method to analyse deixis used in Girl in Pieces novel by Kathleen Glasglow. The procedures are collecting data, processing data, and analysis data. The result of this research indicated that there are three types of deixis used in the novel, person deixis, spatial deixis, and temporal deixis. Person deixis consist of first person deixis to identify the speaker, second person deixis used to appoint the addressee, and third person deixis refer to a person neither the speaker nor the addressee. Spatial deixis used to explain the location of certain utterance. Temporary deixis have function to describe an exact time of utterance. There are 676 deixis found in chapter one of the novel, consist of 569 person deixis, 85 spatial deixis, and 22 temporal deixis. By apprehending the deixis, people could avoid misunderstanding, avoid confusion, and gain more information.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to see the effect of grammar and vocabulary mastery on writing in English. The research method used is a survey method with analysis and regression techniques with the assistance of the SPSS 20 program. The research sample examined 47 students from 3 high schools, namely students of class XI at SMK Daarul Hikmah, SMK Miftahul Falah and SMK Daruttaibin which are located at Serang Regency. The data set collection is accumulated by presenting a grammar mastery questionnaire by carrying out a written English proficiency test. From the analysis, result shows: 1) There is a significant effect of mastery of grammar and vocabulary together on the English writing skills of students at SMK in Serang Regency. It is indicated by the acquisition of the Sig. 0.000 <0.05 and FH = 49,615. Along with mastery of grammar and vocabulary contributed 69.3% to the variables written in English. 2) There is a significant effect of language mastery on the English writing skills of students at SMK in Serang Regency. It is proven by the acquisition of the Sig. 0.001 <0.05 and th = 3.616. The grammar mastery variable contributed 12.39% in improving English writing skills. 3) There is a significant effect of vocabulary mastery on the English writing skills of SMK students in Serang Regency. The acquisition of the Sig. 0,000 <0.05 and th = 6,093 is shown in the data. Vocabulary mastery variable contributed 35.28% in improving written skills in English.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah memberikan pelatihan keahlian kepada masyarakat betapa pentingnya komunikasi berbicara menggunakan Bahasa Inggris. Pelatihan difokuskan pada percakapan Bahasa Inggris sehari-hari yang dilakukan di Yayasan Darussalam, Depok Timur. Metode penelitian yang dipakai dalam riset ini adalah berbasis kualitatif deskriptif dengan tehnik role-play. Data berasal dari peserta pengabdian masyarakat yang berusia antara 13 hingga 17 tahun. Skala pengukuran menggunakan level kemampuan berbicara dari level terendah 1 hingga level tertinggi 6. Hasil yang didapatkan dari riset ini sebanyak 1 peserta pada level 4, 9 peserta pada level 3, 5 peserta pada level 2, 2 peserta pada level 1.

Abstract

  The aim of this research is to find out the usage of figurative language appear in The Room of My Life’s poem by Anne Sexton and Still I Rise’s poem by Maya Angelou. The study focused on kinds of figurative language that appeared in the poems. A descriptive qualitative method was used in this study. Data were gathered from each line of the poetry then figurative language were grounded.The results showed that the poems mostly used three kinds of figurative language: personification, simile, and metaphor. Personifications were more dominant than similes and metaphors in The Room of My Life and similes were more dominant than personifications and metaphors in Still I Rise.

Abstract

The research is aimed to find out the speech act classification and types of request strategy from a dialogue of the characters in Tall Girl movie. The method of this study is descriptive qualitative analysis. Data is taken out of all dialogues of the characters and is observed by using theories. In this analysis, the writers found the speech Act Classification and Types of Request Strategy in the Speech Act. The speech act is classified in declaration, representatives, directives, commissives, and expressive. Directives served the dominant form among the five types of illocutionary act mostly expressed their utterance. And as request strategy is typed in mood derivable, explicit performative, hedged performative, locution derivable, want statement, suggestive formula and preparatory. Mood derivable served the dominant form among the other types to deliver their willingness.

Abstract

This research is aimed to find the perception of students on the speaking ability in Public Speaking class during pandemic Covid-19. By communicating to students who are from Public Relation majored, the researchers considered that speaking as a tool of communication should be done intensively. Therefore, within this pandemic teachers and students should change their learning methods from offline face to face to online face to face. The authors stated the problems that the students faced, they are perceptions and difficulties of online public speaking learning. A qualitative method had been used to analyze this case. The authors used the percentage of students as respondents to see the perceptions. The result of this research viewed that students disagree with the online Public Speaking Course. This amount consisted of 35,4% of total respondents that possessed in the second rank. While the first rank with the amount of 36,5% stated hesitation whether should be conducted online or offline. Abstract

Word comprehension is the essential learning for students to learn English well and correctly, because it is the way to improve the students’ English vocabulary mastery to can practice the students’ ability in understand the reading text English well and correctly. The problem the writer had outlined in this research deals largely with the study of reading. The subject of this research was twenty-eight students at the eighth grades of SMPN 273 Jakarta. The design of the research was classroom action research. It was conducted in two cycles; in cycle I was done with two meeting and cycle II was done with two meetings. In this research the students were given pre-test before treatment and post-test after treatment. The research aimed to find out whether the used crossword puzzle game technique could increase word comprehension the students in English mastery. The data collection technique in this research was observation, field note, test, and documentation. The purposes of given pre-test and post-test are to know how far the students’ word comprehend in English before and after being given treatment. The criteria of students’ who got score at least 70. The class could be said successful in achieving the material if 85% of the students in that class got score at least 70 and they had activation at class more than 50%. The average of pre-test score in cycle I was 65 or 10 students got pass score, and post-test 1 70.7 or 16 students got good score and the average post-test 2 in cycle II was 77.8 or 24 students got good score. This fact showed that teaching English by using crossword puzzle game technique can increase word comprehension in reading English

Abstract

Background: Depression and anxiety are complex emotional states in which cognitive evaluations and affective and physiological responses are involved. However, Laney the main character in the movie really made the audience feel emotional when watching. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the types and symptoms of depression and anxiety. Design and methods: In conducting this analysis, the study uses a qualitative description method which means the technique of collecting data or theory from books or journals obtained from internet media sources and analyzing important notes that have been made, and watching movies. Results: This study shows that depression and anxiety are described as a disease that can be experienced by anyone, as a result of the analysis found three types of depression and anxiety and seven symptoms of depression and anxiety in Laney's character, and Laney's illness due to past trauma.

Abstract

The goal of this study is to enhance students' listening comprehension by using YouTube videos. This study employed classroom action research Kemmis and Taggart’s design as its methodology. There were thirty- five of non-English major students in the subject. The findings demonstrate a significant improvement in students' listening comprehension. After the teaching and learning process using YouTube videos, it reveals that the students' mean score in cycle 1 was 68.3, with 68.57% passing the minimum standard score. It continued to cycle 2 with a mean score of 71.0 and a passing percentage of 85.71%, indicating a significant improvement in listening test results. In cycle 3, students' mean score was 84.2, and 94.29% passed the minimum standard score. Hence, the implementation of YouTube videos as a learning media can help students to enhance their listening comprehension. It is proven by the improvement of students’ mean score and their learning performance in each cycle.
